What's Spacemen 3?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:02 (twenty years ago) link

it's a supermarket chain from rugby. closed down in the early nineties.

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:05 (twenty years ago) link

So how can it "re-unite"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:13 (twenty years ago) link

The Spacemen 3 who're (not really) reuniting are actually a band who named themselves after the chain.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:14 (twenty years ago) link

What kind of a supermarket chain calls itself "Spacemen 3"? What did they sell?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:16 (twenty years ago) link

No it's actually a joke on D's part, sorry. It's a lovely thought, though. I guess they'd sell spacemen, have only three in stock, and close pretty quickly.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:18 (twenty years ago) link

kate, a returning poster used to order food from the supermarket from america. she moved to england to be closer to the chain but sadly it closed in 1992. the band, named itself after the foodchain for the novelty and had a brief trance-lite hit cover of soup dragons 'i'm free'.

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:18 (twenty years ago) link

ostensibly, when it first opened 'spaceman 3' was a project designed by three astronauts, buzz aldrin and two others who werent famous but still went to the moon. the chain went bust in england but found fortune in rubgy. the supermarket has novelty type items such as astro-a-bix, etc.

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:21 (twenty years ago) link

i'm seeing grand potential for a new thread here

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:22 (twenty years ago) link

kate found fame with her obsession of the food chain and was the subject of two documentaries: one produced by channel four which saw her wandering around albany in the spacemen 3 uniform and the second, which caused dispute by many, in which kate says she inspired and sang on the trance cover of 'i'm free'. thus, when andrew titled this thread, it was a 'joke' as she was excited because she has over 2000 copies (all the same) of the trance hit.

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:24 (twenty years ago) link

Wherever Rubgy is, I want to move there. And call my house K-Rubgy!

I did actually think of warning Chris about this thread, but I thought it would be more fun for him to find it on his own. (Good look getting the coffee off the monitor, I find that a rubbing alcohol solution works well)

kate (kate), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:26 (twenty years ago) link

is that the spacemen three - 'astro-coffee' kate? have you tried the 'moon cleaner' for your coffee.

(for the reader: kate is a bit 'emotionally unstable' when you mention the supermarket.)

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:29 (twenty years ago) link

For a moment I believed you, how stupid can you get.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:20 (twenty years ago) link

I guess they'd sell spacemen, have only three in stock

who would have to be Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. Neil would have a string which you could pull and he'd say "That's one small step...", Buzz would have a button on the back of his head which you could press and make him punch the nearest "it was all done in a Hollywood parking lot" conspiricy theorist and Mike would have a string you could pull and say "When are Buzz and Neil gonna get the hell off that lump of rock, I'm getting mighty bored on my own up here".

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:20 (twenty years ago) link

Did you know that Buzz Aldrin was the first Freemason in space? He took a handkerchief emblazonned with secret Masonic symbols on the spaceflight. He was a Masonic Boom indeed!

kate (kate), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:22 (twenty years ago) link

i do still have the edition of nme when sonic and jason are (separately) interviewed following their bust-up...guess which Cliff Richard song title they use to advertise the fact on the front cover?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:23 (twenty years ago) link

how did Buzz cope with the rolled up trouser leg/pressurised suit problem?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:24 (twenty years ago) link

Oh wow, MarkH, I would love to read that! Meow!

kate (kate), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:24 (twenty years ago) link

kate (kate), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:25 (twenty years ago) link

e-mail me yr address Kate and I shall send you a copy, if you like.

i remember the caption under their photos for the Recurring review: "your shades, man, they're shite...". burned indelibly into my memory

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:35 (twenty years ago) link

It's bad when you have to look up your own address. OK, I've just moved! I have an excuse for not knowing it!

kate (kate), Thursday, 3 July 2003 08:44 (twenty years ago) link

Andrew Farrell should have to hand in his ILE badge for starting a thread of this title. I demand to speak to the manager!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:48 (twenty years ago) link

This thread fills me with joy. If Kate can hitch up with HSA, maybe I've still got a chance with Clare Grogan.

six years pass...

anyone heard the new split with wooden shjips? anyone know if it's an outtake from the "big city" sessions, or real honest to goodness new music??

kamerad, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 00:11 (fourteen years ago) link

nar it's not new, it's an early demo of big city

mighty angus sampson (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 00:15 (fourteen years ago) link

damn, i was hoping they'd buried the hatchet. been really enjoying spectrum lately. curious why they'd release a demo as an a-side of a split, with wooden shjips of all people

kamerad, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 00:45 (fourteen years ago) link

unfortunately it's not the first time earworm/gps have released S3 odds and sods. i guess they're pretty good sellers, but they're pretty damn uninteresting compared to the stuff dom usually releases

"your shades, man, they're shite..." (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 00:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Wooden Shijps has been releasing cover singles lately (their cover of Gainsbourg/Bardot's "Contact" is terrific)

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 02:05 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, looks like the shjips are covering "i believe it." here's more info

not that it maybe belongs here, but i just noticed that amazon is taking preorders for a december rerelease of the perfect prescription on vinylized plastic. news to me.

is that the fire records one? if so it's probably just a repress of their '03 reissue..

"your shades, man, they're shite..." (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 03:57 (fourteen years ago) link

would like to see proper HQ reissues of the first two albums, like the space age version of playing with fire

"your shades, man, they're shite..." (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 03:58 (fourteen years ago) link

think the 03 fire reissue was cd only right? according to discogs it added "soul #1" and "that's just fine". amazong says the new vinyl will include "rollercoaster" and "starship" (presumably the long versions?) but i dunno - offered elsewhere as a straight reissue w the original track listing. fire uk site won't open atm so it's hard to say.

God, they just need a fucking box set. A few years ago I tried to amass a digital S3 discography and found that every fucking pressing has different tracks, edits, mixes, etc. And then all these compilations!! What's one to do?

Well hello, and welcome to my display name! Do you like this post? (Stevie D), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 10:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i wonder just how much more in the way of demos/outtakes/etc there is to still be issued.. has any other band had this much in the way of their flotsam trickled out like this?

"your shades, man, they're shite..." (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 10:10 (fourteen years ago) link

stooges for example

Don't forget about that 2 CDR set that Sonic put out, How The Blues Should've Turned Out. It's got a lot of great stuff on it.

But I do think that the Stooges are the kings of this sorta thing.

flaminrev, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 10:28 (fourteen years ago) link

on reflection, there's probably an ilm thread for this...

Don't forget about that 2 CDR set that Sonic put out, How The Blues Should've Turned Out. It's got a lot of great stuff on it.

bits of that are o k - these blues, for example - but it's also shorthand for how lazy the reissues became; £40 for two cd-rs of outtakes.

seven months pass...

The "Art Of Spacemen 3" show opens in London tomorrow night and, well, you need to see the fine print at the bottom of this:

In addition to the art on display, the London Launch event will feature appearances from Sonic Boom, Gruff Rhys and Dan Treacy. Will Carruthers, Jonny Mattock, Mark Refoy, Roscoe, Kevin Shields, Pat Fish, Bassman and Natty himself (health permitting ) will also be in attendance.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 15 July 2010 02:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Of course there's a name missing on that list, but if Gilmour and Waters can perform together more than once...

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 15 July 2010 02:47 (thirteen years ago) link

And if it happens, I'm going to eat my shoe.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 15 July 2010 02:52 (thirteen years ago) link

If it happens, I'll probably walk out. :-P

I strongly doubt it. However, I would actually *rather* if the J-man didn't turn up, for the simple reason that, well, I'd much rather Kevin Shields filled in for him.

I mean, a Boom-Carruthers-Mattock-Refoy line-up with Shieldsy on guitar would pretty much be guaranteed instant orgasm. (Would be nice if Pat would get onstage with them, but I imagine he'll be propping up the bar, which is a considerable distance from the stage.)

That said, Carruthers is one of the most convincing (and amusing) liars I've ever met, so I would not be surprised if I turned up and it was just him.

(Kidding!)

I think your shoes are safe, mind you. (Mine, however...)

And wow, is the first half of this thread depressing as fuck. :-(

moved to ILM

mod, Thursday, 15 July 2010 09:43 (thirteen years ago) link

That was pretty amazing. Never thought I'd see 4/5ths (how else to describe it? Also thx to Masonic as I didn't know who most people onstage actually were, not looking exactly as they did 20odd yrs ago) of Spacemen 3 AND Kevin Shields onstage together. Playing Revolution. That was something.

ok was this a different band than the one that MBV gave an opening slot to on their reunion tour doing (mostly) sonic's spacemen songs?

or the different band that I saw (with many NYC ilxors) at secret project robot in 11211 doing (again mostly) sonic's spacemen songs?

Home now - ha, those were Diane's pictures you just retweeted on Flickr! I tried to take a couple of pics, but they were shit. Elaine Dream Machine was also taking pics so I'm sure there will be lots floating round tomorrow on Facebook.

So the complete lineup:
Sonic Boom - Organ, Guitar
Will Carruthers - Bass
Johnny Mattock - Drums
Mark Refoy - Guitar
Jason Holt - Guitar
Kevin Shields - Guitar

it was AWE INSPIRING in the most amazing way. So glad I got to see that.

(I was talking to Dean - the dude who was roadie-ing - before the gig. I don't think anyone actually bothered to invite Jason Pierce... ha ha hahahahahah)

Um. yeah. ears ringing.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 16 July 2010 09:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Adamrl, have you actually seen the TVPs perform in, oh, about the last five years or so? If your idea of a fun time is watching a man utterly ravaged by addiction and mental illness self destruct in front of a microphone, then I can see how it might be enjoyable, but frankly, I find it painful and slightly embarrassing to watch on the same level as watching a drunken uncle smash up a wedding. But, you know, to each their own.

Cow Bingo (Masonic Boom), Friday, 16 July 2010 09:29 (thirteen years ago) link

http://www.spacemen3.co.uk/spacemen4.jpg

But I can't go along with the labelling of those YouTube clips - it wasn't Spacemen 3. You need Pete and Jason for that. Not saying it would have been any better, could well have been worse once they start trading blows on stage, and I'm not taking anything away from one of the best sets I've seen in recent times. It just wasn't Spacemen 3.
