Agree that people shouldn't worry about listening to everything on the list. You don't have to be a rap scholar, just VOTE for the shit you already LOVE. This isn't Rolling Stone's Most Important Rap Albums poll. Personally, my lists skew pretty recent because I was born in 1984 and never really got super heavy into the "classic" pre-1992 foundational stuff. In conclusion, fucking VOTE and give props to a hoy hoy!

Yeah, I'm going to try to eventually listen to all the songs nominated, but not for voting purposes.
― President Keyes, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 22:57 (thirteen years ago) link
I didn't even think for a second to consider listening to all the songs nominated cuz uh some of the nominators have terrible taste lol

that 90210 clip is incredible
also not trying to be a dick, sorry! just saying that doing both tracks and albums in one poll is such a monumental task that it's no wonder ppl have vote fatigue.
(and it all comes from frustration at not having time to compile my votes!)

― D-40, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 02:13 (thirteen years ago) link
just use my noms list
surprised how much stuff nominated i'm not into. still have more than 50 on my long lists but plenty of that is multiple entries for the same artist. some stuff i used to be into & expected i'd be voting for doesnt resonate like it used to, like i used to love the jeru tha damajah album but didn't feel much listening to tracks off it just now. id probably still love most of the production on the album but jaylib - the red is not as good as i once thought. should've been more alert during nominations i just figured everything ever would be nominated
torn bw voting #1 for something that CHANGED MY LIFE when i was 13 but has ossified a bit & something ive gotten into & been listening to obsessively lately like dah shinin or hell on earth or ridin dirty

flop i'm cool with you voting hell on earth #1 :DDDDDDD
Following up on my comment that I missed out on a lot of 80s foundational stuff, I've been listening to Strictly Business in its entirety for the first time lately and daaaaaaaaaaamn, that shit should have been on my ballot.

I've got my tracks list cut down from 143 to 54, it's getting pretty painful to trim these last four

Ha, I had the same experience. Leapt up my ballot - can't believe I'd never heard it all the way through before.
Obviously you don't have to work through the noms list - impossible with albums and time-consuming with tracks (though quicker with Spotify than YouTube). But it was something I'd wanted to do for so long - check out all those records that other people loved and I'd never gotten around to. I ended up not only with tons of great discoveries but a much clearer understanding of what I look for in hip hop - what thrills me, what leaves me cold. I'm looking forward to seeing what people like Lex and deej champion from the 00s because it's slim pickings from me.

agree that no one should worry too much about what they vote for, just vote! Thanks AHH for organising! I'm looking forward to hearing a lot of stuff I haven't heard as a result of this poll.
For Britishers and other Europeans, I will at some point (probably in a week or two) attempt to do a Spotify playlist of tracks. If only there was a Spotify API...
