They were fucking incredible.

Trip Maker, Friday, 27 May 2011 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

lost sounds! love black wave and, and everything else, basically. but drugs, check out memphis is dead (their debut) - rougher and dirtier, maybe not as ambitious, but lots of great tunes/riffs.

and wow, that's cool, trip. you from memphis?

contenderizer, Friday, 27 May 2011 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

uh huh

Trip Maker, Friday, 27 May 2011 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link

some indie rock comp on a german label from 1989. *diamonds and porcupines*. wedding present, montgomerys, go-team, bats, st.christopher, mc tells, earwigs under fire, sachiko, crocket and jones, fenton weills, pale saints, easter island, dog faced hermans, beat happening, viola crayfish, cannanes.

since i've only heard wedding present, bats, pale saints, and dog faced hermans and never heard the rest of these bands i figured i'd play it.

and, no, i don't think i've ever actually heard beat happening.

scott seward, Friday, 27 May 2011 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

The Cannanes are an Aussie indie-pop band whose membership included Dave Nichols for awhile--he wrote fanzines and a book on the Go-Betweens

blawan - "getting me down" (great bouncy house w/harmonized brandy sample)
T Williams - "People's Choice" (more bouncy bass music, not sure what genre this would be, but it's maybe in the same family as hessle audio type stuff)

stravinsky - les noces
respighi - various stuff
BNJMN - Plastic World (this is a really good LP from rush hour chill-house artist, kind of Boards of Canada, Pom Pom, Lone mood music)
death grips - exmilitary

wooden shjips - west

phog masheeen - 23 duets

scott seward, Monday, 6 June 2011 15:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i put on a new album by book of knots that i got in the mail (remember them? i barely do and i think i even reviewed an album once) and it was so terrible i only lasted five seconds. wooden shjips is pretty bad too. but i'm picky when it comes to 80's retro. i kinda liked the warlocks when i saw them live in philly a couple of times years ago. never really listened to black rebel motorcycle club. wooden shjips has inspired me to put on a jesus & mary chain demos collection i have in the store.

keep playing new sea & cake thing hoping i'll like it more if i hear it more but its just...okay. the synth/chillwave moments are kinda the most interesting parts. the regular sea & cake moments are just your standard late-period sea & cake.

scott seward, Monday, 6 June 2011 15:54 (thirteen years ago) link

don't like the white hills album on thrill jockey either. sorry white hills! sorry thrill jockey! nothing personal.

scott seward, Monday, 6 June 2011 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link

don't do what i do, which is to play a bunch of new electronic promos and then play an old Cluster album, and then get all sad about how the promos aren't as good as Cluster and end up listening to nothing but Cluster all day

geeta, Monday, 6 June 2011 16:03 (thirteen years ago) link

it's a hazard, this is true.

scott seward, Monday, 6 June 2011 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link

not great spacemen3/j&m chain-isms in 2011 is always gonna be a bit of a bummer to me though.

scott seward, Monday, 6 June 2011 16:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Geeta, which new electronic stuff, and which Cluster album? I know that feeling... Zuckerzeit is usually what inspires that. I've actually been enjoying solo Roedelius the most lately... As horrible as I feel saying it, sometimes I just can't help thinking that Moebius can be a little spazzy and self-consciously quirky, whereas Roedelius seems less concerned with overtly strange noises and more into some sort of immersion or textural gracefulness or something.

Clarke B., Monday, 6 June 2011 16:26 (thirteen years ago) link

digging this vibracathedral orchestra album right now. always meant to listen to them. (totally selling it though)

scott seward, Monday, 6 June 2011 16:27 (thirteen years ago) link
