NWA didn't even place in the 80s albums poll we had a while ago! Granted, the voting demographic might be different here, but still... In your top 5 prediction, I'd replace Black Planet with Aquemini and Doggystyle with The Chronic.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 11:08 (thirteen years ago) link

And no way is Rapper's Delight in the top 5, probably not even in the top 50. I'm pretty sure Sugarhill Gang's status as "fakes"/rhyme-biters will keep true heads from giving them high scores.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 11:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I gave my Sugarhill Gang vote to Funky 4 + 1 - far more deserving candidates imo

Or maybe it was b/c the five or so tracks on it that aren't ridiculously classic & awesome are really not all that great.

rhymes might be bitten and Sylvia a rip-off merchant, but Delight is a fucking jam

DJs playing the full 15 minutes at every bar and afterparty I went to in the late 90s killed it for me.

We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 12:48 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i agree that it won't be in the top 5, but i really don't think there are that many hip hop fans who are so hung up on Sugarhill's lack of cred that they'd deny their place in history or the merit of that song (that said, i didn't vote for "Rapper's Delight," but that's mainly because i forgot and only realized i didn't after i sent my ballot.

rebecca sprayfart (some dude), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 12:55 (thirteen years ago) link

36 Chambers>Illmatic>Nation Of Millions>The Chronic>Doggy Style is my guess.

PG Harpy (Doran), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 12:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll sub Ready to Die for one of the Dre/Snoop albums but that looks like a fair prediction.

We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 12:58 (thirteen years ago) link

if the tracks ballot is staying open for another week can i send some corrections to mine?

shalmaneser (tpp), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 13:02 (thirteen years ago) link

sure. only 2 more ballots to sort.

I kinda doubt Doggystyle will crack the top 5, but I really don't know. If this were any other site Midnight Marauders would probably be #5.

Sure. It'll be open till Sunday.

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Where you trolling when you made your noms list, Lamp? Many of those were amongst my new favorite things when shuffling through the list... I'm abstaining from voting because I'm obviously no authority when it comes to hip-hop and I don't want to ruin the results.

lol 'ruin'. some people already voted for the last kanye album, you can't do worse than that.

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I could be wrong here, but i have a feeling people are gonna complain about this list no matter what happens.

Number None, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Well I'd have placed Gil Scott Heron and Rammellzee + K-Rob in my top 10, so yes, I could do worse.

whats wrong with rammellzee?

TODAY IS YR LAST DAY TO VOTE IN THE SINGLES

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Monday, 6 June 2011 10:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Question for the patrons:

SpottieOttieDopaliscious is my favorite track ever and I am torn on whether to give it a vote or not. Thing is, I don't really feel like its even a "rap" or "hip-hop" song, kind of a hard song to classify tbf. I don't want it to get the gas-face like Donuts/Endtroducing for not fitting in the fold.

Thoughts?

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 6 June 2011 15:28 (thirteen years ago) link

it is outkast

it is on a 5 mic record

it has a rap beat

it has rapping on it

don't get the problem

you should vote for the song but change your display name imo

somebody nommed "sabotage" so it seems to be a free-for-all, do whatcha like

no serenade no fire brigade just a trypophobia (Edward III), Monday, 6 June 2011 15:37 (thirteen years ago) link

I want to say it again: instrumental hip hop was included in this poll right from the nomination process, the reason people seem to be confused is that Sam changed the name of the poll from "hip hop" to "rap" between the nomination and the voting thread. But it would be silly to clain Endtroducing and Donuts are not in the same genre as all the other albums in the top 100; where else would they belong?

That said, "SpottieOttieDopaliscious" is indeed a hard to categorize. Gil Scott-Heron's "Revolution Will Not Be Televised" was also nommed, if you think that one qualifies, then surely the Outkast tune does too. Personally, I don't think you can call "Revolution..." hip hop, because hip hop didn't exist when it came out, but "Spottie..." is hip hop, because it was released on a hip hop album by a hip hop act. It's all in the context.

Tuomas, Monday, 6 June 2011 15:40 (thirteen years ago) link

wait a minute this is a HIP-HOP poll shit i better change my whole ballot i thought we were doing RAP yall
