Madonna and Prince would be the two I would feel least qualified to vote in but most interested in following.

Argh xp, Positive K *really* needed that single extra vote to make the 100
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:10 (thirteen years ago) link
As far as I can see there's been about seven threads devoted to single artist write in polls over the past month. It's hardly overloading the board, there's usually about half a dozen 'radio button' polls finishing each day.
― Cluster the boots (Billy Dods), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:10 (thirteen years ago) link
What was the structure of the Pavement poll? 3 days to vote, 3 days' reveal? I think a 2-day reveal would be fine for all these, whether it's a top-50 or top-60.
― Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:12 (thirteen years ago) link
I do think nominations are a little silly for single artist polls; check a discography for yr eligible tracks.
There are also bands I want to do (or see) completely skewed, counter-intuitive polls to force critical re-evaluation on segments of material, like a post-1990 Depeche Mode poll or a no singles Orbital poll (obv not with a top 50, lol)
― anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link
Ismael: damnit!!!! Honestly though I wouldn't be able to do 50 songs without adding 10 Jay-z, the Busta remix of Fantasy, etc. Woulda been laughed out of the thread.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:16 (thirteen years ago) link
Eh, I ran out of time (lol work) but my ballot basically would have been "every song by my favorite x artists plus like 5 classics"
― anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:18 (thirteen years ago) link
@DJP - New Order post-Technique poll? ::shudders::
― Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:18 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah, the initial threads for the Traxpoll aren't so much a "nom" as a "bigup" for certain tracks.
― Mark G, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:18 (thirteen years ago) link
KDT: Yes, exactly! Obv getting people to opt in would be difficult but I think there's some value in exploring/re-evaluating a band when they fall out of their "unadulterated genius" period
― anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:20 (thirteen years ago) link
hey before the flood can we make a rule that only one of these can go on at once

Yo La Tengo (27-year-discography, wide-ranging opinions about recent work) would be an interesting poll for a year or so down the line.

people find the results roll-out process so seductive (increasingly so in presentation terms too e.g. v positive reaction to video screen grabs with text on them for tracks ) that i do think most polls are created more for this (intensified communal) experience than a genuine curiosity about and value of the results (in most cases). so yeah journey > destination, that's more an observation than a criticism (i was and still am pretty into the presentation aspect like a maniac - been working on a site to display list/poll results in cool ways for ages but never finished because actual important stuff gets in the way).
an artist-specific poll could be good for someone who wants a quick easy guide to that artist but not necessarily more than a S/D, C/D, POX or just general discussion thread about them.
― blueski, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:29 (thirteen years ago) link
"one at a time" partisans, can we at least agree that once the reveal starts for X, the voting can start for Y?
this seems like a good schedule
how much time per results thread?
― iatee, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:29 (thirteen years ago) link
I'll do a Beach Boys poll but will probably wait a bit
― lots of janitors have something to say (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:29 (thirteen years ago) link

omg I can't wait for the multiple threads of trying to coordinate this "one poll at a time idea"

Is that coördinating thread just for single artists, or for all polls. Because I quite fancy trying a disco one.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:40 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah but a load of polls on the front page at once makes it harder to see the rest, and causes niche interest threads to drop off New Answers more quickly. Also, the more polls there are going on at once the less likely they are to get wide participation and comment.
Kinda amazed the first post on that thread wasn't someone immediately going I CLAIM INSANE CLOWN POSSE.

― Cluster the boots (Billy Dods), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link
Well, there is that point where the voting date End has passed.
Do not be beholdern on the results thread starting, as it could happen that the results never happen! (remember that 80s poll?)
― Mark G, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:44 (thirteen years ago) link
Things these polls do:1. Take two threads each, one for announcing the voting itself and another for the results.2. Spur discussion about a band some people love, some people like, and some people are simply curious about. As noted upthread, the scheduled rollout may artificially prolong the discussion, but it's prolonged nonetheless.3. Crown a winner! Yippee! But as also noted upthread, finding out what wins isn't the fun part. The journey is.
Things these polls DON'T do:1. Clutter up the board if done one at a time. See previous item #1.2. Force anyone to participate.3. Proclaim superiority of one style over another. For example, just because I organized a poll for "Pavement" doesn't mean you can't organize a poll for "Destiny's Child/members thereof". I'll be interested in that one even if you aren't interested in mine.
― Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:47 (thirteen years ago) link
Tbh, I can't believe how concerned people are about "cluttering up the board". We already have so many damned threads, its hardly to make THAT big of a difference.

Not an artist, and I don't know that we have the expertise to carry it off right, but what would be really incredible would be a 'The Caribbean' poll.

Steely Dan--I guess only hardcore fans turn out to vote in these things, but I love how passionate the Pavement one got, I bet SD would be the same, albeit for a different ILM demo (maybe?)
― Iago Galdston, Friday, 17 June 2011 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link
I like how each one of these might involve different numbers of votes per ballot, different numbers on the reveal, different point distributions, depending on the person running it. The Pavement voting structure was weird, but at least it was weird for everyone.

naw but man whenever there's a new thing like POX or "best album by" or whatever ILM new answers becomes this really offputting TWENTY NEW THREADS OF THE NEW IDEA thing...it's just sloppy and ugly. Always a head-smackin bummer when this happens
