This is some bullshit.
I would have voted Ether.
― jim, Saturday, 25 August 2007 01:15 (seventeen years ago) link
Most of the disses in Ether are weak
already an album called Blueprint = not interesting thinks he gets girls because of his looks = jay-z makes fun of how girls thought he was ugly until he had money gay-z/cockafella = ... better than big = never actually said whole chorus = extremely labored, not catchy, not all that clever
not to be all "Hey, stop being unfair to Jay-Z!" but Ether is a boring punchline song and the punchlines don't even land.
― Hurting 2, Saturday, 25 August 2007 01:22 (seventeen years ago) link
Can agree that Ether is mostly silly playground name-calling but it's waaaaay better since Nas puts son in place on so many tips:
What's sad is I love you 'cause you're my brother You traded your soul for riches
My child, I've watched you grow up to be famous And now I smile like a proud dad, watching his only son that made it
Is he Dame Diddy, Dame Daddy or Dame Dummy? Oh, I get it, you Biggie and he's Puffy
And your man stabbed Un and made you take the blame You ass, went from Jaz to hanging with Caine, to Herb, to Big
Shawn Carter to Jay-Z, damn you on Jaz dick
How much of Biggie's rhymes is gonna come out your fat lips?
You pop shit, apologize, nigga, just ask Kiss
All that kinda stuff. Ether wins.

All the digs are kind of lame - Jay-Z looks like a camel, Nas wasn't really a thug. Yawn.
Ether is a better song, Nas is a better rapper, Ether wins.

― Colin_C., Saturday, 25 August 2007 02:57 (seventeen years ago) link
I voted Takeover. 2 things the Ether-boosters need to remember:
- Takeover was at best like the 5th or 6th most popular song from its album, there's really not a whole lot Stillmatic worth remembering or talking about besides Ether
- the Hot 97 call-in vote that people usually cite as proof that Nas "won" was between Ether and Super Ugly, so of course Ether won. curious how it would've turned out between Takeover and Ether.
― Alex in Baltimore, Saturday, 25 August 2007 05:40 (seventeen years ago) link
Me too. I've always liked how Jay uses the first verse to set himself up as an unassailable force before he starts calling names, between that and the beat, which is some knocking-down-the-doors (npi) shit, "Takeover" sounds overwhelmingly confident, whereas "Ether" sounds withdrawn and petty.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 25 August 2007 07:24 (seventeen years ago) link
jay-z had but 2 good lines in that whole half-dope gayne west track jack (every song he produced is overshadowed by what he stole ftw)

honestly neither of them are very good. I remember when they both came out, and Nas' was clearly superior simply because he brought a bazooka to a knife fight. the arguments in Takeover's favor about Jay's nonchalance & only mentioning Nas in one verse make sense to me now. the homophobic stuff in Ether obviously sinks it. but he definitely "won." I'm glad no one died this time.
