310. Many people have wondered why we call rock concerts "concerts" when concerts involve music, and rock obviously is not music.

According to William Safire, back in the early days of the youth movement, whenever a hippie played his guitar or his drums or whatever, the racket was just so awful that he'd need a lot of drugs to make it bearable. So soon enough, any event with this so-called music would be called "a trip." In Canada, though, the acid was just not very potent. So instead of "taking a trip," Canadian hippies would say they were "going to a hotel" or, even more anti-climactically, "going to the concierge." Eventually the slang got imported back to the States (rumor has it by Skip Spence), where evidently someone got confused by the subtle "g" sound in the word and mistook "concierge" for "concert." Nobody saw fit to correct the fool, so this bit of mutilated language lives with us to this day.
