I see that Darklands will have the NME version of "Some Candy Talking" which makes it a must have for me. Also, can't wait to hear "Darklands" with strings!

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 07:54 (twelve years ago) link

I wonder if they'll be newly remastered? Does anyone know if Upside Down contained the 2006 remasters?

These are truly completist gems. Will likely get Automatic too as I passed on the Rhino version.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 07:58 (twelve years ago) link

You wanna talk completeist?

"Vegetable Man" and "Upside Down (12" demo version)" plz.

Also, "Taste of Cindy" when it originally came out on the "Hit" magazine e.p. had a split second intake of breath which was excised on the album.

IT WAS AS IMPORTANT A MOMENT AS THE SPLIT SECOND PAUSE BEFORE THE SECOND GUITAR SOLO ON "I HEARD HER CALL MY NAME"

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 08:25 (twelve years ago) link

OK, that track listing for CD2 isn't revealing what those tracks actually are, in most cases.

I never got the Dualdisc issues, the extras looked fairly lean pickings, and weren't available in the UK for some reason.

OK, I've decided, those 2CD+1DVD sets are going to have to live at my house...

"Vegetable Man" and "Upside Down (12" demo version)" infos plz

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 08:45 (twelve years ago) link

Also, still want to hear their cover of Jefferson Airplane...

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 08:45 (twelve years ago) link

Well, as I say, the 12" version of "Upside Down" had those two tracks on it. It never got issued, but I did have a white-label copy of it which I sold for a tidy sum a while back.

The "Vegetable Man" was as per the 7" version, it's not been reissued before, apart from the box set.

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 08:50 (twelve years ago) link

Actually, come to think of it, they had a song called "Send me away" on their original demo cassette which I've never seen since, unless it has a different title

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 08:51 (twelve years ago) link

munki wasn't reissued by rhino.

Explains why I don't have it and never came across a copy then.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 13:25 (twelve years ago) link

i heard (and not via ILM !) that upon the release of Munki on Creation, it sold less than 3000 copies.
would love to know how many of the reissue sells !

mark e, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 13:47 (twelve years ago) link

It was so long after-the-fact, it doesn't surprise me.

It seemed so odd that WBros turned the album down and released the bits-and-bobs collection "The J&MC hate RockandRoll"

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 13:59 (twelve years ago) link

everytime i see this thread, i'm freshly repissed that it doesn't say "chainia"

do over

"SMC to JAMC and BRMC but maybe GHMC is better or possibiliy IFJDOMC, MCCMMCCM, or HFRUEIIMC"

Bar two and three, were any of these actual bands?

I went to the RFH gig and nearly got into a fight with Bobby Gillespie in the toilets after I politely asked him why he wasn't playing drums.

It was good in a nostalgia fest kind of way, Snakedriver was particularly robust but William was pretty fucking awful and every time Jim went to say anything between songs he just did a massive power chord so you couldn't hear what he was saying. And they murdered the slower stuff like Nine Million Rainy Days. Pretty sad really.

They were better at the Brutus benefit but I guess that was a more emotionally charged night or what have you.

Rebekah Brooks Ate My Country (Doran), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 19:53 (twelve years ago) link

they were great at the roundhouse a few years ago. much better than circa munki

cw, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 20:17 (twelve years ago) link

surprised munki was so unpopular, if it indeed was, it's probably in my top 3 JAMC

oh shit a behringer (electricsound), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 23:20 (twelve years ago) link

Munki was totally decent, though I only gave it a chance last year for the first time since its rep was so bad.

Euler, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 23:25 (twelve years ago) link

interested in the Darklands reissue

i once had the Upside Down/Vegetable Man 7" but i think i lost it

;-(

In A Hole from whistle Test (12 March '85) (but not the others)
North London Poly Riot (15 March '85)
Interview / Never Understand from VRT Belgium (17 March '85)
Just Like Honey / Inside Me from the Tube (11 October '85)

koogs, Monday, 8 August 2011 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

Lovely.

You say "not the others", but they only broadcast one song at the time, so maybe that was all they did.

Mark G, Monday, 8 August 2011 17:49 (twelve years ago) link

really? it's been more than that in my head all these years. i remember the buzz (and distinct lack of, was really divisive) in the VI form common room the next day. all that from 3ish minutes? (haven't watched the dvd yet)

koogs, Monday, 8 August 2011 18:00 (twelve years ago) link

Looking at the HMV page for this, it seems they've found Murray Dalglish.

Mark G, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 00:33 (twelve years ago) link

Was he missing? His wee brother still lives in Bishopbriggs as far as I know.

love the way they all sit down at the end of In A Hole. andy kershaw looks about 12 when introducing them.

bobby g looks cool and is funny throughout, especially at end of the riot video.

and have just seen Teenage Lust video for the first time. was banned in uk and i always wondered how bad it could be. the answer is 'pretty bad'. there is a teenage stripper wandering around naked for half of it.

(dvds are all ntsc btw, which is less of a problem than it used to be - i only realised because it said so on the disc, dvd / tv played them fine)

Mark G, Friday, 30 September 2011 08:59 (twelve years ago) link

Pretty surprised Jim liked Trixie's Big Red Motorbike tbh, didn't they used to slag off all the twee indie bands (apart from the Pastels, obviously)?

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Friday, 30 September 2011 09:03 (twelve years ago) link

i am surprised at the pastels mention actually. not heard him mention them before. makes sense musically, chronologically and geographically but sometimes that stuff creates a rivalry.

koogs, Friday, 30 September 2011 10:00 (twelve years ago) link

Also, US ilxors who want the reissues should order through Amazon.co.uk - much cheaper and actually in stock. I ended up paying just under £10/$16 each delivered.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 1 October 2011 21:55 (twelve years ago) link

1st time I saw The Pastels they were opening for the JAMC. First time I saw the JAMC too actually.

Reissues are great as expected. The mastering on 'Psychocandy' is very different than the Rhino, but I haven't had a chance to listen to my old Blanco y Negro disc to see if it's the same.

Also, in the interviews there's a great line from Jim about an aborted 'Darklands' session that involved Curt Smith of Tears for Fears being brought in to try the intro to the title track and doing a bunch of slap bass.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 3 October 2011 23:25 (twelve years ago) link

four months pass...

it is kinda hilarious how much the pre-psychocandy demos sound like the dr mix and the remix record, which either douglas hart or bobby g openly admit to in the liner notes.

For me it's striking how much 'arrangement' is within "Up too high" off that disc. Basically, it's all there!

This is supposed to have an 'online book' according to the deluxe 3disc things.

I emailed the photographer named, and he said there'd been a delay for copyright reasons, but it's all sorted now so it'll soon be there.

That was about 2 weeks ago I think...

It's comfort food, really...
