I'm just DYING for one of these guys to go balls-out and release a full-on, four-to-the-floor trance/rap crossover.

this song is great!

ciderpress, Friday, 29 February 2008 04:54 (sixteen years ago) link

With an actual house beat, I mean.

Also, yeah, totally feeling the Wiz tune.

horrendous

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 05:00 (sixteen years ago) link

slight improvement over the original but unfortunately does not take it above the mediocrity line. if it were me I would have repitched the adj riff down

i don't like all the space in the first verse really, but the video kept me watching and by the third verse i was noddin my head

"a friend of mine from pittsburgh was trynna get me to pay attention to this dude like a year and a half ago and i was all 'lol pittsburgh rap'

-- deej"

he is probably one of the best pittsburgh emcee's ive heard, though he is only as good as the beats he is on. at my record shop (in pittsburgh, obviously) we sold many copies of both his mixtape and his demo, which is wild since we almost never move copies of local shit because it mostly sucks.

this song in particular is very poopy, ive heard him do it live opening for Nas once and TI once, both times it made me want to throw up in my mouth. that said, the cat who does alot of his studio shit played me a track he did rapping on a 9th Wonder beat, that shit was very hot. and of course the joint he did on Nicolay's album is pretty nice. he needs to hook up with some of pgh's better beatsmiths, he could be ridiculous.

for some actually really dope pittsburgh hip-hop (though he is originally from strong island) check armstead brown:

http://www.myspace.com/peacepipeproductions

his "Fieldwork" album is actually very very good, one of the best real hiphop records i have heard in years.

pipecock nothing on that myspace is anywhere near as good as 'say yeah'

deej, Saturday, 1 March 2008 02:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Isn't this just a rip-off Bone Thugs 'n Harmony over some trancey sounds? Next.

"pipecock nothing on that myspace is anywhere near as good as 'say yeah'

it all depends on what youre looking for. if you want good hiphop, armstead brown is your man. if you want some nonsense, then that wiz joint is right up your alley. that shit is barely even listenable, what a fucking joke of a song. it makes me mad because the guy could obviously do some much better shit.

pipecock, Saturday, 1 March 2008 05:00 (sixteen years ago) link

"can you recommend a good fake hiphop record?

pipecock, can you tell us what jazz record "Say Yeah" is most comparable to, phrased as "'Say Yeah' is the __________ of hiphop"?

thx in advnc

i can't actually think of a jazz record that is embarassing enough to make a direct comparison, but imagine Charlie Hunter covering "YMCA" and i think you could almost get there.

This song is great and the bit in the video where he's on the moon is lolz.

It takes talent to take a half-decent trance song and turn it into a decent rap beat. I'm inspired.

i'm glad we all agree that this song is the shit

J0rdan S., Saturday, 1 March 2008 20:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I've always hated the original mostly because of that annoying synth riff and it really isn't that much better with someone rapping on it.
