no idea she was younger than me

I never thought she was all that but I resent how detractors -- guys, of course -- couldn't dismiss her without using variants on "skank" and "ho."

rest in peace. God this one's making me really sad. I loved Back in Black until I couldn't listen to it anymore because it lived in my cd player so long in 2007.

even though this isn't technically a surprise, I still held out hope that she'd rebound from her crazy lifestyle.

hoping she's found peace now...RIP Amy

Between the hangers-on with a vested interest in keeping her down, managers with a vested interest in keeping her touring when she could barely stand up and any number of people, irl and in the press, willing to cheer her on or simply laugh at her decline, i don't know if she ever stood a chance. I'm angry more than anything else, at the moment.

I don't buy a lot of modern pop records but I really loved frank and back to black. Rip.

Frank was so underrated. when I think back to 08, which was a very great year in my life, I think of that album a lot, as that was the year I discovered it (along with Back to Black).

Neanderthal, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:13 (twelve years ago) link

happy at least that I'll have those memories...

Neanderthal, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:13 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't know her music well, just "Rehab" and the Ghostface track, but I'd read some of the stories of her difficulties. Twenty-seven from my perspective is not even the starting line. Feel so bad that she didn't make it out of the woods.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

just the enthusiasm she had for music. you could tell she lived and breathed it. Every detail on Back to Black showed she was a student of the 60's girl pop she was creating, but she and her team made it her own, brought it into the 21st century, without insulting or watering down the genre.

and god, that voice.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

very sad and too young.

she had at least one song ("tears") that i loved as much as anything i heard in the last ten years, and plenty of other good ones. this is horrible. r.i.p.

Wow, awful news to wake up to. Though I can't say it's shocking, it's still incredibly saddening... poor girl. She was so talented, had so much more to offer. R.I.P.

"Rehab" is a song by English recording artist Amy Winehouse from her second studio album, Back to Black. Written by Winehouse and produced by Mark Ronson, it was released as the album's lead single in the United Kingdom on 23 October 2006. The lyrics are autobiographical, describing a protagonist's drinking habits and refusal to enter rehabilitation clinics. This appears to have been a poor decision in hindsight.

Seriously, fuck the internet and fuck the people of this world, this is horrible news and so heartbreaking to think of so much squandered potential and talent. Thoughts and sympathies to her families and friends, I hope that this makes some people think long and hard about themselves and the people they are, and how we deal with substance abuse and addiction so it wasn't all in vain.

rereading that 2007 WaPo article linked upthread; ?uestlove's comments struck a nerve with me:

"Once I heard [her music], part of me felt like: 'Don't... rock the boat. Let this take its course 'cause that way you'll get great music.' And part of me wanted to reach out to her."

bernard snowy, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:41 (twelve years ago) link

Questlove's comments strikes me as an example of "just cos something is true, doesn't mean it needs to be said"...

Neanderthal, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:43 (twelve years ago) link

I hate Facebook at times like this. Someone was complaining she'd "lowered" the 27 club. PLEASE FUCK OFF.

prolego, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:45 (twelve years ago) link

yea and the other things are:

"92 dead in Oslo, and we're talking about THIS" (yes, because nobody can find BOTH tragic)
"The world is so fuxxored, why does this matter" (see above)

I've decided to just post youtubes of her vids in retaliation...fight fire with really fucking good music

Neanderthal, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:47 (twelve years ago) link

xxpost I dunno I thought it was a pretty honest response and like, the whole tortured genius mythology... argh I dunno. my brain is addled cuz I've just been reading Diderot's 'Paradoxe sur le comédien' where he argues that the best actors/artists are totally 'unsentimental' pros, and obviously Amy is the polar opposite of that... *throws up hands in confusion*

bernard snowy, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:52 (twelve years ago) link

not that I want to turn this thread into ILM's umpteenth discussion about all that shit. I should just shut my mouth.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

this is really weird... i never really thought she would die suddenly like this, for some reason. i guess i just assumed at some point she would smarten up and be like "whoa i'm completely ruining my life" but i guess that never happens to some addicts. fucked up.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

bernard-i think i was somewhat retroactively biased by the fact that I know what I know today and his comments are 4 years old. I really don't have a problem with his 'sentiment' because it's not like he's the first or only person or musician who have feelings like that. so I retract what I said, being that he said this 4 years ago.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 23 July 2011 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

xpost: i dont think it happens for MOST addicts. i think we just expect it of large-scale entertainment types because (for better or worse) they have so many people around interested in keeping them alive.
