Ismael, not sure what the "one album" post refers to--?

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

mulling the jb poll. along with singles, i wonder if it might be interesting to also open it up to a.) albums and b.) tracks featuring jb samples? b.) might be pushing it.

why would you want to restrict a James Brown poll to just the singles? that's crazy.

including sample-based songs is def crazy

Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

haha well i meant "tracks," not "singles" per se. and because all the other polls have been limited to tracks!

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

may do a sub-poll of top five jb-sampling tracks.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

xps I mean instead of polling a band, polling Exile On Main Street or Tusk or something. Ballots of five. NB I am NOT volunteering for this.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:23 (twelve years ago) link

I don't understand how a poll would include both best album AND best single, like why would you mix those two results together

Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

also everyone knows James Brown's best album is "The Payback"

Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

You could specify the ballot to be top 20 (or whatever) tracks and top 5 (or whatever) albums, and the countdown could run down one then the other, sort of 2 polls for the price of one.

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:57 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i will give it some thought. if it's too unwieldy i'll just go straight tracks.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

No one's doing Bowie yet?

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

Surprised there's no Cure poll planned.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

At three weeks a poll, I think your list now takes you into next summer. I'd be happy to sign up for either Neil Young or Yo La Tengo then--can't remember if they turned up in the suggestions thread or not. (My preference would be for Neil.)

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:16 (twelve years ago) link

These aren't taking three weeks per!

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:19 (twelve years ago) link

Okay...time slows down to a crawl when you're off. If your list grows to a point that leads into next summer (20? 25?), please put me down for a big Neil Young poll (like Prince, anything he ever wrote).

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

a week for voting and a week for results works fine i think

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

I'm doing my results in a day hopefully. Maybe have a week off before getting the next one running if this is a concern?

Not really practical at the moment, but if no one's done it in a couple of months when I have the time I'd be glad to.

We definitely have more than a couple of months' worth lined up, so I went ahead and penciled you in.

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

I'm doing my results in a day hopefully.

^ not my poll, but I think that is way too fast! You need to leave nice big gaps in there for discussion, which imo is a lot more interesting than the results table at the end.

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

he means tabulating?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

Voting closes for VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD FOR ILM POST 1945 BEST JAZZ ALBUMS POLL (Voting closes August 27) in just under 4 weeks. Would whoever is doing the following weeks poll mind waiting a week so it doesn't clash? if not then i suppose we will need to work round it somehow. Don't want to step on anyones shoes.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

Oh right, phew! xp

I know it's just polling for the sake of polling, but I was thinking about an SST tracks poll. Think you'd need a billion people to participate to get enough overlap though.

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

ideally seandalai & i would like to roll out the results mon 29th August-thursday 1st sept.

xp

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

macdara & i would vote in an SST poll for sure. Albums and/or tracks.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:43 (twelve years ago) link

the ones we ran a few years back did really well

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:43 (twelve years ago) link

way too fast!

Maybe ... but we've had excellent discussion on the voting thread already, and voting's only a week so it doesn't need dragging out imo. I'm only planning a top 20 or 30 anyway, if once I've added them up it looks like I should go higher then I'll maybe reconsider.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 20:49 (twelve years ago) link

Would definitely vote in an SST poll.

I encourage people giving the .xls a try! I tried my best to set it up so you just have to drag & drop a formula in one column :)

― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, August 2, 2011 8:40 PM (2 hours ago) Bookmark

Oh I will! And it's very much appreciated! :-)

Basically, having never done a poll before, I will try the .xls first. If my lack of knowledge of how to work it does me in can always resort to pencil and paper :-)

I for one am (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

I'm already on the hook for one (GBV), but someone should really put together a Van Halen one. Honestly, I don't know why it took me so long to think of it.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

I agree that a one-day reveal for U2 is too fast.

time to put it in hi geir (WmC), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 14:31 (twelve years ago) link

gonna jump the gun a little bit w/ the beach boys voting cause I'm not sure when I'll have access to a laptop tomorrow

horseshoe, Thursday, 4 August 2011 04:01 (twelve years ago) link

11-12 weeks lamp tho you could probably trade up spots if you were crafty

iatee, Thursday, 4 August 2011 04:20 (twelve years ago) link

honestly I think the lineup of polls we have now will take 6 months to go through

(the list in progress)

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Thursday, 4 August 2011 14:13 (twelve years ago) link

have we had a Stones poll?

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 11 August 2011 00:42 (twelve years ago) link

yes, stones--great idea (also kinks)

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 11 August 2011 00:48 (twelve years ago) link

Stones and Kinks would both be good ones! Feel free to claim.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Thursday, 11 August 2011 00:51 (twelve years ago) link

I'm having a little ballot fatigue, but every time I look at the list I get excited about the Producers poll.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Thursday, 11 August 2011 00:52 (twelve years ago) link

i can't begin to get my head around the producers poll. maybe it'll make more sense to me once we do a nominations thread. feels like such an apples and oranges thing to compare how one producer works with these artists to how another works with other artists. maybe i'll throw up my hands and just vote for all my favorite hip hop beatmakers.

dogps (some dude), Thursday, 11 August 2011 01:05 (twelve years ago) link

I think that one would go okay without a separate nominations thread -- just an extra long voting period and a lot of campaigning -- but that'll be Shakey Mo's call. I dunno, I can see the value in a noms thread as well.

I guess it would include engineers too...who was more important to the Beatles discography, George Martin or Geoff Emerick?

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Thursday, 11 August 2011 01:12 (twelve years ago) link

I'm totally stoked for the producers poll. Will claim the Stones though someone may have to remind me by the time it comes up!

i think there'll almost HAVE to be a nominations thread just to hash out stuff like producers vs. engineers, artists who only produced themselves, people who are chiefly remixers, producers who've worked extensively as a team or individually, etc.

dogps (some dude), Thursday, 11 August 2011 01:30 (twelve years ago) link

Still basically TS: George Martin vs Rick Rubin tho right?
