Ismael, not sure what the "one album" post refers to--?

mulling the jb poll. along with singles, i wonder if it might be interesting to also open it up to a.) albums and b.) tracks featuring jb samples? b.) might be pushing it.

why would you want to restrict a James Brown poll to just the singles? that's crazy.

including sample-based songs is def crazy

haha well i meant "tracks," not "singles" per se. and because all the other polls have been limited to tracks!

may do a sub-poll of top five jb-sampling tracks.

xps I mean instead of polling a band, polling Exile On Main Street or Tusk or something. Ballots of five. NB I am NOT volunteering for this.

I don't understand how a poll would include both best album AND best single, like why would you mix those two results together

also everyone knows James Brown's best album is "The Payback"

You could specify the ballot to be top 20 (or whatever) tracks and top 5 (or whatever) albums, and the countdown could run down one then the other, sort of 2 polls for the price of one.

yeah i will give it some thought. if it's too unwieldy i'll just go straight tracks.

At three weeks a poll, I think your list now takes you into next summer. I'd be happy to sign up for either Neil Young or Yo La Tengo then--can't remember if they turned up in the suggestions thread or not. (My preference would be for Neil.)

Okay...time slows down to a crawl when you're off. If your list grows to a point that leads into next summer (20? 25?), please put me down for a big Neil Young poll (like Prince, anything he ever wrote).

Not really practical at the moment, but if no one's done it in a couple of months when I have the time I'd be glad to.

We definitely have more than a couple of months' worth lined up, so I went ahead and penciled you in.

^ not my poll, but I think that is way too fast! You need to leave nice big gaps in there for discussion, which imo is a lot more interesting than the results table at the end.

Voting closes for VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD FOR ILM POST 1945 BEST JAZZ ALBUMS POLL (Voting closes August 27) in just under 4 weeks. Would whoever is doing the following weeks poll mind waiting a week so it doesn't clash? if not then i suppose we will need to work round it somehow. Don't want to step on anyones shoes.

I know it's just polling for the sake of polling, but I was thinking about an SST tracks poll. Think you'd need a billion people to participate to get enough overlap though.

Maybe ... but we've had excellent discussion on the voting thread already, and voting's only a week so it doesn't need dragging out imo. I'm only planning a top 20 or 30 anyway, if once I've added them up it looks like I should go higher then I'll maybe reconsider.

I encourage people giving the .xls a try! I tried my best to set it up so you just have to drag & drop a formula in one column :)

Basically, having never done a poll before, I will try the .xls first. If my lack of knowledge of how to work it does me in can always resort to pencil and paper :-)

I'm already on the hook for one (GBV), but someone should really put together a Van Halen one. Honestly, I don't know why it took me so long to think of it.

I'm having a little ballot fatigue, but every time I look at the list I get excited about the Producers poll.

i can't begin to get my head around the producers poll. maybe it'll make more sense to me once we do a nominations thread. feels like such an apples and oranges thing to compare how one producer works with these artists to how another works with other artists. maybe i'll throw up my hands and just vote for all my favorite hip hop beatmakers.

I think that one would go okay without a separate nominations thread -- just an extra long voting period and a lot of campaigning -- but that'll be Shakey Mo's call. I dunno, I can see the value in a noms thread as well.

I guess it would include engineers too...who was more important to the Beatles discography, George Martin or Geoff Emerick?

I'm totally stoked for the producers poll. Will claim the Stones though someone may have to remind me by the time it comes up!

i think there'll almost HAVE to be a nominations thread just to hash out stuff like producers vs. engineers, artists who only produced themselves, people who are chiefly remixers, producers who've worked extensively as a team or individually, etc.

Still basically TS: George Martin vs Rick Rubin tho right?
