have we had a Stones poll?

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 11 August 2011 00:42 (twelve years ago) link

yes, stones--great idea (also kinks)

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 11 August 2011 00:48 (twelve years ago) link

Stones and Kinks would both be good ones! Feel free to claim.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Thursday, 11 August 2011 00:51 (twelve years ago) link

I'm having a little ballot fatigue, but every time I look at the list I get excited about the Producers poll.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Thursday, 11 August 2011 00:52 (twelve years ago) link

i can't begin to get my head around the producers poll. maybe it'll make more sense to me once we do a nominations thread. feels like such an apples and oranges thing to compare how one producer works with these artists to how another works with other artists. maybe i'll throw up my hands and just vote for all my favorite hip hop beatmakers.

dogps (some dude), Thursday, 11 August 2011 01:05 (twelve years ago) link

I think that one would go okay without a separate nominations thread -- just an extra long voting period and a lot of campaigning -- but that'll be Shakey Mo's call. I dunno, I can see the value in a noms thread as well.

I guess it would include engineers too...who was more important to the Beatles discography, George Martin or Geoff Emerick?

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Thursday, 11 August 2011 01:12 (twelve years ago) link

I'm totally stoked for the producers poll. Will claim the Stones though someone may have to remind me by the time it comes up!

i think there'll almost HAVE to be a nominations thread just to hash out stuff like producers vs. engineers, artists who only produced themselves, people who are chiefly remixers, producers who've worked extensively as a team or individually, etc.

dogps (some dude), Thursday, 11 August 2011 01:30 (twelve years ago) link

Still basically TS: George Martin vs Rick Rubin tho right?

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 11 August 2011 01:39 (twelve years ago) link

vs. Phil Spector vs. Tom Dowd vs. Teo Macero -- it's not going to be as clear-cut as Martin/Rubin, I don't think!

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Thursday, 11 August 2011 01:46 (twelve years ago) link

Glen Ballard vs RZA

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 11 August 2011 02:05 (twelve years ago) link

Tom Wilson, George Shadow Morton, David Briggs...That'll be a tough one to rein in to a manageable number.

clemenza, Thursday, 11 August 2011 02:30 (twelve years ago) link

I'll do the Kinks!

That's a lot of old white men in a row, 16-19 -- if somebody signs up for Madonna or P-Funk or somesuch, there might be some schedule juggling for variety's sake, yeah?

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Thursday, 11 August 2011 02:42 (twelve years ago) link

Oh yes, Roger and C. Grisso! Thanks for doing those, can't wait

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 11 August 2011 03:13 (twelve years ago) link

I will do a Depeche Mode poll.

Ok, so I'm going to be unable to do the Kate Bush poll before September 10. Would someone from places 10/11/12/13 be so very kind to swap with me? Pretty please?

I for one am (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 15 August 2011 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

Bring 'producers' forward if possible imo, would be a nice break to a run of classic rock.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 15 August 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

Excellent plan, if Shakey Mo agrees.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Monday, 15 August 2011 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

i volunteer to do either ABBA or the fall (whichever one people would find more interesting), am fine waiting until whenever

i'm 13 so i can step in if nobody in line before me wants too -- Timbaland poll would serve the same function of throwing something different into the mix

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know how involved you or anyone else is in setting the schedules for the specific things, but should i try to have the Timbaland poll start by/after or end by/after any particular dates? it seems like the voting widow for most of these is around a week but i'd love to open it to more like 2 weeks for people to sort through such a large and diffuse discography.

forkshighwaytopoopon (some dude), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 00:19 (twelve years ago) link

Your discretion. A longer polling period might work perfectly since Armond Ratfucker wants a window without one of these artist poll reveals where he can bring out the jazz album results.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 00:31 (twelve years ago) link

ah good idea, i'll check w/ him to see what would work best

forkshighwaytopoopon (some dude), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 00:37 (twelve years ago) link

I would really love to run a Fleetwood Mac poll at some point.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 16 August 2011 01:20 (twelve years ago) link

Wow, that would be involved.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 01:36 (twelve years ago) link

Indeed, but I love them enough to do it, and I think it would be a hugely participated-in and pretty heated one given the general level of love for them on the board...

Clarke B., Tuesday, 16 August 2011 02:34 (twelve years ago) link

the top 50 would really just be 3 albums w/ a few singles thrown in tho

iatee, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 02:39 (twelve years ago) link

I'd be willing to give a thorough listen to the pre-Lindsey/Stevie years, but I still can't guarantee that I wouldn't just send in my Tusk ranking. (j/k mostly) OK, you called it --

Just a reminder that my sometime-in-2012 was meant to be July or August. I'm guessing you've pushed me back to 2013 by now.

clemenza, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 04:29 (twelve years ago) link

Here, have a prime number. I'm sure you'll be able to trade into a time slot that works for you.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 05:02 (twelve years ago) link

someone do the Cure, please! i would but can't right now.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 05:35 (twelve years ago) link

also New Order.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 05:36 (twelve years ago) link

I'll do the Cure, whenever there's a slot.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 06:43 (twelve years ago) link

Would somebody like to do Radiohead or The Chemical Brothers at some point?

My heart goes out to the people of platitudes (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 07:14 (twelve years ago) link

Some dude, I kiss you! Thanks for helping out!

I for one am (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 07:54 (twelve years ago) link

OO yes, someone do The Fall! and swap with Kate Bush / move up the queue!!!

Mark G, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 08:14 (twelve years ago) link

i'm generally more intrigued by the idea of polling bands with lots of albums. i think the fall would work well in this regard, along with, say, sonic youth and possibly stereolab.

while i'm curious about a poll for the cure, they're one of those bands that at this stage i have really fixed views on, so i'd probably be less likely to be informed or enlightened by contrary viewpoints as to what their best songs might be.

charlie h, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 08:37 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not objecting, but Led Zep? Do they have enough tracks?

Mark G, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 08:53 (twelve years ago) link

I believe I counted 84-ish. The small discography will make it interesting, for sure!

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 13:07 (twelve years ago) link

ha, I was wondering for some time if there's a need for a RH poll! doing polls sure looks like fun, I might give it a try.

V79, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 13:36 (twelve years ago) link

I'll have to trade with someone next summer. But it'll have to be with Paul Simon or the Kinks--I've got a prime number, and I do not plan on losing that.

clemenza, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 13:56 (twelve years ago) link

Considering quitting ILX, so I should bow out of doing this to be safe.

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

eric, no!

i think i will do ABBA, just bcz they have a less, uh, unwieldy discography and the variation in results might be more interesting (assuming people vote for non-single tracks which they SHOULD)
