A bunch you'd expect, and a bunch you wouldn't.

Pretty surprised Jim liked Trixie's Big Red Motorbike tbh, didn't they used to slag off all the twee indie bands (apart from the Pastels, obviously)?

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Friday, 30 September 2011 09:03 (twelve years ago) link

i am surprised at the pastels mention actually. not heard him mention them before. makes sense musically, chronologically and geographically but sometimes that stuff creates a rivalry.

Also, US ilxors who want the reissues should order through Amazon.co.uk - much cheaper and actually in stock. I ended up paying just under £10/$16 each delivered.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 1 October 2011 21:55 (twelve years ago) link

1st time I saw The Pastels they were opening for the JAMC. First time I saw the JAMC too actually.

Reissues are great as expected. The mastering on 'Psychocandy' is very different than the Rhino, but I haven't had a chance to listen to my old Blanco y Negro disc to see if it's the same.

Also, in the interviews there's a great line from Jim about an aborted 'Darklands' session that involved Curt Smith of Tears for Fears being brought in to try the intro to the title track and doing a bunch of slap bass.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 3 October 2011 23:25 (twelve years ago) link

four months pass...

it is kinda hilarious how much the pre-psychocandy demos sound like the dr mix and the remix record, which either douglas hart or bobby g openly admit to in the liner notes.

For me it's striking how much 'arrangement' is within "Up too high" off that disc. Basically, it's all there!

Mark G, Monday, 13 February 2012 13:23 (twelve years ago) link

This is supposed to have an 'online book' according to the deluxe 3disc things.

I emailed the photographer named, and he said there'd been a delay for copyright reasons, but it's all sorted now so it'll soon be there.

That was about 2 weeks ago I think...

The other day I was reading that John Moore is rejoining the Mary Chain.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:11 (twelve years ago) link

Well, most of the old band have other jobs / countries to live in, and so on...

Mark G, Monday, 13 February 2012 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

I dunno,. I'm ploughing through the DVDs in the deluxe sets (all of them!)

It's comfort food, really...

Mark G, Monday, 13 February 2012 21:23 (twelve years ago) link

I ordered all the deluxe sets too! have received three so far (they have to cross the pond...) I haven't watched much of the DVDs yet, just a bit of the live sets on Psychocandy & it's hilarious how loud they are. I guess I knew that! But it's just a mess.

Many of the extras are things I already had on the Rhino box, but it's nice to have the BBC sessions with the albums themselves.

Euler, Monday, 13 February 2012 21:26 (twelve years ago) link

Mr. Moore is indeed in -- we ended up becoming Facebook friends by chance a couple of years back, passionate fellow but also a good sense of humor. He posted this photo the other week, before starting to talk about getting out all the guitars again...

Aww..

You see, over there on that TV screen is Jim looking all young and that.

And on the laptop is this pic. Actually, Jim isn't looking too bad for the years, so..

Mark G, Monday, 13 February 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, I had never seen the promo for Sometimes Always before!

Ooh, the 'online book' is, um, online!

I like how JAMC have settled into the "Cal Jam 2" phase of their career while still maintaining some sense of odd weirdness. The Reids are still obstinate but with a coating of the mannered gracefulness that comes from being a professional entertainer - those Bad Vibes could really be a Martin & Lewis act. I'm not Especially when William looks identical to King Buzzo.

On the plus side, now that they seem like they're giving a partial shit, they sound fantastic. I never would have expected them of all bands to be around in 2012, but it felt appropriate for an almost-summer Friday night at a horse race track in Inglewood. Lots of people dancing and singing along. Good times.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 18 June 2012 01:22 (eleven years ago) link

I think they played last night in LA. Anyone go?

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Monday, 18 June 2012 03:28 (eleven years ago) link

I did! (hence the thread revive)

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 18 June 2012 04:51 (eleven years ago) link

Haha they played at that track? Wow. They only seem to advertise shows there if they're good-time white reggae bands.

adderall cannonby (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 18 June 2012 05:03 (eleven years ago) link

Kind of a good series there this year... Devo, JAMC, X

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 18 June 2012 08:51 (eleven years ago) link

Ah that's what happens when you skim posts - sorry! Totally jealous.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! BOSTON SHOW ANNOUNCED. :DDD

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

I am only a casual listener, but I feel like the fact they're playing at First Avenue means I have to go. A classic band playing at a classic venue? And I feel like they could play somewhere bigger in town. 25 bucks...

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 21:41 (eleven years ago) link

They were complete shit last Thursday at the Fillmore. Big waste of money.

svend, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 22:52 (eleven years ago) link

Still debating whether I should see them on Saturday. It's not that I don't want to, but I just haven't been feeling that great.

tylerw, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 14:49 (eleven years ago) link

Missed the DC show. Heard they played for 70 minutes, which for them ain't bad I think.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

x-post - Are they good? I was planning on pulling my usual turn up just before the headliner so I don't have to sit through awful opening acts thing. Also, I wanted to go home and nap first. Yes, I am old.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

argh

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 17:33 (eleven years ago) link

you know, I always thought it was weird (& pretty lame tbh, tho the shows were usually amazing regardless) that I saw them prob eight or nine times b/w 1992-98 & they never once played a single goddam track from Psychocandy - the only thing from that era that made their setlists was 'Some Candy Talking.'

Broney, Pt. 1 (Pillbox), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 17:35 (eleven years ago) link

otoh I bet they played the shit out of "Reverence"
