"this is probably more for the dynamic compression thread but i think the reason I prefer the Gibbs to either the ASAP or LEP albums is because its just such a better-engineered record than either"
Yeah definitely, having said that, Burn One really knows how to produce a track, his craft/sound is so pure, everything he produces is perfectly crisp. Just listening to Peso (Burn One) followed by Bass (Clams) and its so easy to hear the difference in clarity.

i really like some of the clams casino production on liveloveasap, its a better context for his stuff than most of his other collaborations, or even solo material.

― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 06:10 (twelve years ago) link
i actually disagree w/ flopson... the clams sound is so branded now, ASAP's stuff w/o him is much more distinctive
wassup is one of my favourites on the tape
― flopson, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 06:12 (twelve years ago) link
Ha, oh. Yeah his 2 on there are standouts I think. Clams has clipping all over his bass, maybe on purpose but I don't feel like the overall aesthetic of his beats match the sound of his beats. I just think if you're gonna go all ott melodramatic with it, then it should sound prestine.

agree completely

asap as a rapper has obvious weaknesses. i find his performance amateurish in some regards; the timbre of his voice is rougher than the smooth pop rap cuts but not quite hard enough when he really spits, neither is his delivery. i felt similarly about mellowype last year. regardless, my favourite moments are the slowest, with airy production. also not sure if he's always perfectly on beat, he sounds a bit sloppy. some of the flows are real strong, i think it's relatively obvious that he has potential

The Gibbs, Asap and LEP have pretty cool art. ASAP is totally Stankonia lite though.

one of the things that really stands out to me abt the peso video is that at one pt hes clearly rocking the mid 90s master p look with the glasses & at another point he & his dudes are obviously referencing cash money w/ the shirtless + black headscarf look. as a rap nerd this is what made them seem fresh, they're reviving a look before anyone else really has
more fashion than music there obv

also want to point out that on rapradar, which is the main hip hop rap blog anyone follows these days (RIP nahright) asap isnt even in the top 5 most popular posts, losing to (somehow) Fat Joe, as well as Gibbs and LEP -- not sure if thats because his was posted latest or by what degree, but i'm saying
― The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 09:11 (twelve years ago) link
not that he couldnt end up being the most popular once the buzz builds beyond fader-land, but this stuff is just not as big as it seems in our twitterverse yet
― The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 09:13 (twelve years ago) link
well the biggest rapper in the rap radarsphere is joe budden, so i wouldn't put much stock in it

clearly buzz is not the same as popularity.

i think you could quite easily make the argument that asap rocky being less popular on rap radar than fat joe, freddie gibbs, young chris and jim jones says more about rap radar than it says about asap raocky
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 16:55 (twelve years ago) link
i think it says more about rap fans while my twitterverse being largely magazine editors & bloggers says a lot more about them
― The boyboy young jess (D-40), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 17:00 (twelve years ago) link
magazine editors & bloggers aren't rap fans, i guess
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 1 November 2011 17:01 (twelve years ago) link
the point "hey look guys not EVERYONE cares about asap rocky!" is a pretty basic & meaningless one and one that privileges the type of rap you listen to & the type of listeners you find authentic, just like i could c/p any number of blogs and websites that aren't covering fat joe's the darkside vol 11 and go "huh, no fat joe here. isn't that something."

no, its about observing the privilege of the tastemakers & people who decide what the stories are going to be for the next XYZ months, how these things are DECIDED UPON by a small group rather than coming from the ground up, the small networking game that makes it possible that we even hear about these artists

i dont fucking privilege the opinions of rapradar's joe budden fans, but that doesnt mean i think asap rocky's fans in the magazine editing world are any better.

so wrong. just because you aren't part of the groundswell doesn't mean it didnt happen or that it only happened among blogging elites
it was very much an organic movement, just as OF was and jsut as Frank Ocean was
the gatekeepers simply saw it coming and co-opted it in each instance
again, the culture has moved on. this is where "grassroots" comes from now

you think he got a deal because he has no fans? just ink?

interesting discussion, I ain't gonna argue w/ppl but there's interesting stuff in it - deej seems to be saying that grassroots can't make for actual popularity, which seems like a weird thing to say...but then I think people have a very romantic idea of 1) there being stuff that isn't from its inception self-aware & tied into publicity and 2) their own ability to tell grassroots from "hype"

as long as it's not as egregious as beginning to hype an act the moment the press release lands in your inbox i don't care, but what i find vaguely confusing is that asap rocky...like, can't rap. not at all. "purple swag" is just a nothing of a track.
