Acrylic Afternoons!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 14:56 (twelve years ago) link

I fell asleep on your sofa and had a dream about a small child in dungarees ... You were there dressed in green, saying something obscene.
But that's why I came here in the first place, Oh well that and the tea.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 14:56 (twelve years ago) link

dammit i just worked it out!

Glad AA is high, it was my #2 I think.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 14:59 (twelve years ago) link

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh of course.

My #2.

soft furnishings, afternoon sex, haunted regressive erotic vibe. Really, the most extraordinary thing.

you don't exist in the database (woof), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 15:00 (twelve years ago) link

Nicely done, NTBT! Technically the small child in dungarees was (a) solo and (b) stuck with his hands in the Paris metro but I hoped you guys would allow the slightly less specific image. Plus of course, the Babies tease!

IMO this song is just pure sex. God, but those squeals.. (can you tell I got His n Hers BEFORE I'd ever had sex?)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 15:03 (twelve years ago) link

Great song, but one that didn't age so gracefully IMO ... partly because Jarvis wrote much better pervy illicit affair songs later on (e.g. I Spy, Seductive B****)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 15:03 (twelve years ago) link

No, Acrylic Afternoons is the best because he didn't outcreep himself - you can imagine that stuff happening everyday, everywhere.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 15:05 (twelve years ago) link

that image isn't working for me.

encarta it (Gukbe), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 15:10 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, AA beats I Spy for me - I've never been sold on the class war stuff in the latter - AA a much stranger piece of work, with the net curtain/eiderdown world around him, lying under the table - it's like the affair's super-sexual yet taking place in childhood memoryland.

you don't exist in the database (woof), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 15:13 (twelve years ago) link

It's like the This Is Hardcore cover, but green.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 15:20 (twelve years ago) link

hahahaha. Sure!

This is true, the imagery in AA is great, but I Spy is a better song. The keyboard hook in AA has always annoyed me a bit and the chorus is somewhat drab, the magic is nearly 100% in the lyrics and Jarvis' delivery. I Spy is a much richer song (the strings, the way it builds as it goes along), and I've always loved Evil Conniving Jarvis (so says the guy who loves "Freaks").

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

i see - for me the chorus of AA is killer - the way the melody unwinds & almost overstretches through that odd little vision of all the children's mothers finishing with lovers. I guess i can see I Spy is the stronger song in almost all regards - ambition, arrangement (especially), doing a lot of big things at once with the lyrics (it's prob his ultimate sex, class, resentment, ambivalent self-dramatisation moment) - and I did vote for it, but out of admiration rather than current love.

Missed most of this day two roll-out due to work, and working again later, but here for the fun right now. Bring it on!

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

There we go, Daavid! I took a brief break for lunch and was about to come back and drop some more clues. I should apologize - my first image was an opposum (a small animal that -might- only come out at night) but then my second image was a lizard, which is not an animal, SCIENCE FAIL. :(

daavid, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 16:37 (twelve years ago) link

isn't it a reptile? maybe I was right all along. I'm stupid with those things - my head only had room for pop culture trivia.

yes, there are virtually no lyrics in the song that wouldn't have led to an immediate giveaway. I tried!

A little shocked this placed so high tbh!
