that image isn't working for me.

yeah, AA beats I Spy for me - I've never been sold on the class war stuff in the latter - AA a much stranger piece of work, with the net curtain/eiderdown world around him, lying under the table - it's like the affair's super-sexual yet taking place in childhood memoryland.

It's like the This Is Hardcore cover, but green.

This is true, the imagery in AA is great, but I Spy is a better song. The keyboard hook in AA has always annoyed me a bit and the chorus is somewhat drab, the magic is nearly 100% in the lyrics and Jarvis' delivery. I Spy is a much richer song (the strings, the way it builds as it goes along), and I've always loved Evil Conniving Jarvis (so says the guy who loves "Freaks").

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

i see - for me the chorus of AA is killer - the way the melody unwinds & almost overstretches through that odd little vision of all the children's mothers finishing with lovers. I guess i can see I Spy is the stronger song in almost all regards - ambition, arrangement (especially), doing a lot of big things at once with the lyrics (it's prob his ultimate sex, class, resentment, ambivalent self-dramatisation moment) - and I did vote for it, but out of admiration rather than current love.

I really don't know Pulp lyrics very well, it turns out.

Missed most of this day two roll-out due to work, and working again later, but here for the fun right now. Bring it on!

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

There we go, Daavid! I took a brief break for lunch and was about to come back and drop some more clues. I should apologize - my first image was an opposum (a small animal that -might- only come out at night) but then my second image was a lizard, which is not an animal, SCIENCE FAIL. :(

Wait, lizard is not an animal?

daavid, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 16:37 (twelve years ago) link

isn't it a reptile? maybe I was right all along. I'm stupid with those things - my head only had room for pop culture trivia.

yes, there are virtually no lyrics in the song that wouldn't have led to an immediate giveaway. I tried!

A little shocked this placed so high tbh!

Interesting, or not, to note that Pulp only played Help The Aged once this summer, in Athens.

"The whole message board voted in unison at 4:13 AM.."

It was like they were underneath the stars in a dream. The only one who knew the reasons why was a freakshow whose sirensong lured the real Snow White ever closer to the hungry ghost. At the last minute, a switch turned on, revealing this here and now. "With you?" cried Snow White, eying the leering spectre. "I'll embrace this endless sleep when I'm dead!" She turned to run but it was too late, the scream cut off abruptly and, with a satiated "It's over," the ghost and freakshow retreated to their lair.
