^this shit is truly a time capsule of ;_; btw

also i think noz is being facetious about the hip-house/snap hop thing

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 22:40 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah t.i. sold the fuck out though - his verses on "live your life" are underrated but whenever that numa numa sample kicks in i feel like im being punked

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 22:41 (fifteen years ago) link

and that song is AFTER live your life

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 22:41 (fifteen years ago) link

er AFTER "whatever you like"

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 22:41 (fifteen years ago) link

ha, I first heard Numa Numa BECAUSE of "Live Your Life", so I don't have any negative association with the sample

a permanent state of o_O (The Reverend), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 22:42 (fifteen years ago) link

t.i.'s uh "selling out" doesn't seem a permanent or irreversible thing though, just trend-hopping

lex pretend, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 22:43 (fifteen years ago) link

the only thing that bugs me about that song is how rhianna pronounces shit like a leprechaun

opinions4usic (deej), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 22:44 (fifteen years ago) link

oof, forgot about that one

what other rap stars are there right now besides young jeezy

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 23:11 (fifteen years ago) link

t.i. WAS arguably the biggest rap star circa king but now his pop songs are worse and so is his rapping - jeezy's just as successful now as he was and he's done it on his own terms - as far as rap goes as an intersection between an art form and a commercial business i don't see anyone more vital to the game than jeezy

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 23:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Internationally, i don't think ppl don't care about jeezy or t.i., it's all about 'Ye and has been since at least Late Registration. And maybe fiddy if they still care about him in 2009 ("I Get It In" dropped today).

subroc back to haunt, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 23:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I know you're intersecting success with ppl you rate, therefore those guys don't apply, but just saying re:stardom. Anyways...

Percival Fats (Born Percival Hindenburg-Fats) Is NOT Lupe Fiasco (Born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco). Although he is a dear friend,' it read 'Lupe does finance the band but is NOT I REPEAT NOT THE SINGER IN JAPANESE CARTOON. He is however the producer and we value his participation very much haha

Q-Tip song for the Cadillac Records OST - "(Evolution of a) Man" is nice in a throwaway way.

The RZA f, Kool G. Rap, Inspektah Deck & Suga Bang (from Afro Samurai: Resurrection) - You Already Know - not really feeling this yet, but it did make me bump "Cameo Afro" from the first one, which was cool.

@Matt upthread, yeah High Powered is on the album, has been around for a bit. Really good. Took me a while to like it tho, and i don't think the video does anything for it.

it answers this question that i've been pondering since i was 15: "what would happen if one of the chicks from bang bus str8 shot one of the dudes?"

the best line in the UK rap is that guy at the end who says "Wigglin' digglin' and gigglin'"

ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 16:51 (fifteen years ago) link

also that porno movies beat is a pretty dope but that guy is a toolbox.

jay electronica is way better of a rapper than him.

ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 16:53 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i listened to this Giles Peterson podcast with him (MP3) a lot last year, and highly recommended it. It's from all the way back in January but has stuff that only surfaced elsewhere much later, such as Extra Extra & Prayer for Michael Vick and T.I. & so on. I'd say it's up to date until roughly before when Transformations came out. Probably a lot of overlap musically with What the f**k is a sampler, but you get Peterson pressing buttons not knowing what's next on a CDR, playing jazz while sorting it out, Jay chatting about T.I., New Orleans, etc. and the whole thing has a mellow loose late night feel.

anyone listening to the Freeway "Month of Madness" mixtape? it's all those tracks he did...

like okay i'm not really involved with any kind of idea of the "best rapper alive" anymore, like i don't even think it matters anymore...

but there is no rapper out there that I enjoy more on a consistent basis than Freeway.

ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 18:23 (fifteen years ago) link

ay that new Term tape has a super hot track

"Say It" f/Sheek Louch, Joell Ortiz, Bun B, Saigon

which i guess is like internet rap dude's dream circa spring 2008 but its fire
