Quite surprised by this, thought it would be medium at least.

xp yeah i expected to have 'very high' with Ned

baaderonixx, Thursday, 8 January 2009 15:57 (fifteen years ago) link

although his top 5 artists are a bit ... surprising:

1 VNV Nation

2 Radiohead

3 Play
Paul Stanley

4 Sparks

5 Vangelis

baaderonixx, Thursday, 8 January 2009 15:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I get the impression from a quick swatch at Ned's play count and top tracks/artists that his scrobbles aren't particularly representative of his general musical tastes, or of how much he actually listens to.

Which raises an intere ... er, a question. How obsessive are you about documenting your listening with last.fm? Me: absolutely and absurdly so. I get disproportionately pissed off if, say, I forget to scrobble plays from my iPod or phone, and would dearly love some kind of plugin for YouTube, MySpace etc so music I watch/listen to there is counted.

Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah a way of scrobbling Youtube and Myspace would be great, and would mean I would use those services a lot more to listen to music!

And I too am super-obsessive, I get upset (upset!) when my iPod fails to scrobble a day's worth of listening.

Aspiest thread of 2009!

Beloved lightbulb (Neil S), Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:04 (fifteen years ago) link

idk i'm obsessive enough about last.fm but it all seems to work itself out these days - ipod scrobbling sometimes inexplicably misses tracks out (i think when i don't play them to the end) but not enough to annoy. i mostly use youuuutuuuube and myspazz for evaluative purposes so it's actually a good thing that they don't show up.

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, part of me wants everything I ever play to be on last.fm, but in practice it's very little. I used to play 99% of music through my computer and stereo, but now the stereo's in the other room, and also I lost a 200GB hard drive full of music so now I've only got about 10GB to play with. Looking at my neighbours since they've changed the thing I've got loads where the bands in common are mainly twee jangly stuff that I just don't listen to these days, but probably makes up most of the plays on the account.
I probably listen to music the most on my mp3 player, but that won't keep playlist data so that doesn't get anywhere. Sometimes I play a CD on the stereo, then put that on the computer to scrobble while I actually listen to something else. What the fuck am I actually doing with my life?

chord simple (j.o.n.a), Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Lex- if you use an iPod, it will only scrobble tracks you have played in full, rather than the default last.fm radio threshold of 50%.

Beloved lightbulb (Neil S), Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeh, I mean ... who on earth would do something like that? <Tiptoes quietly away from thread, blushing>

And my compatibility with Dom is very high, which is even more surprising than my compatibility with Ned:

Your musical compatibility with Juror8 is Very High

Music you have in common includes Half Man Half Biscuit, The Long Blondes, Dead Kennedys, De La Soul and The Smiths.

nate woolls, Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Only music I listen to on my laptop gets scrobbled. I still listen to a lot of CDs & vinyl on my stereo, which obv don't get scrobbled. I haven't bothered to try and scrobble from my ipod. Can't be arsed really. So the music on my last.fm while roughly indicative of my music taste also includes a fair amount of music I've been checking out and don't actually like much.

if you're too lazy to look through the list of useful scripts it is http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/34012

but check the 3 or 4 pages of last.fm scripts for some good stuff.

ones I use are

baaderonixx, Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I meant compatibility level with ILX as a group

Hmm. I was going to say: "I'm not changing my browser of choice just to run some scripts" but apparently GreaseKit could help there. We'll see. Not something I'm obsessive enough to worry about right now, certainly :p

Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:52 (fifteen years ago) link

lex if you use firefox you download greasemonkey then you go to the pages i linked for the scripts and click install. once you have done that you restart firefox and everything will work.
And if you dislike a script you just uninstall it

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 8 January 2009 16:53 (fifteen years ago) link

or do what simon suggested if you're on a mac

At work I plug my ipod into my computer so everything gets uploaded as I listen all day - I never have music actually on the computer, just on my ipod. The next day when I plug it in it wants to send the tracks I've listened to in the last whatever number of hours, which sadly includes all the stuff I listened to the day before at work, which was already scrobbled. Sure I can un-check stuff when the little dialog box pops up but it only lets you uncheck things one at a time so it's super annoying.

Seems like there has to be a way to deal with this?

Seems like there has to be a way to deal with this?

If you're using a Mac, use iScrobbler as your client software? iSproggler for Windows also comes recommended, but I've no experience myself. I hated the official Last.fm client for the Mac and haven't ever gone back to it.

Also, yeh: it's not showing any neighbours for me now. They've made a mild arse of this, haven't they?

oh lord -- so herman PAYS to use last.fm?? lol no wonder hes so into it

I subscribed for a while: I liked the additional radio options it gives you, and it's pretty cheap. Wonderfully, my subscription's lapsed but I'm still getting all the benefits.

NB to any passing Last.fm staff: remember, you work for THE MAN. Therefore, letting me have my free subscription is STRIKING A BLOW AGAINST THE MAN. Thank you.

Yes, I admit it. Worth it for £1.50 a month I would say.

I've just got a Spotify invite too, which is now scrobbling to last.fm!
