I love how the album does the same faux-concept album thing as FS/LS only in a more understated way.

re: "Nikki"- My rankings upthread no longer apply. It wasn't a stand-out for me at first but I like it just fine.

lou, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 13:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Dream needs to stop rockin the bug eyes. He already looks like something with six legs and wings to begin with.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 06:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Instead of studying econ, I've been listening to Nikki on repeat for a long time. CHILLS

"but it's awful cold in that house he bought you/and i've gotten over living without you/so springtime, summertime, falltime, winter/i'm here to leave you with the last thing you'll remember"

Tape Store, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 07:53 (fifteen years ago) link

that "falltime" part is always where i start gnashing my teeth and thinking about what a hack this guy is.

some dude, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:28 (fifteen years ago) link

i think my favorite one now is "playin in her hair"

"i feel like an outworked boxer in the very first roooouuund/tried to keep my guard up but she caught me and im goin doooowwwn"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 28 August 2008 22:50 (fifteen years ago) link

four weeks pass...

also i realized how close the chorus of "i luv your girl" sounds to "look at shawty looooooooo"

Year of the Gentleman flipped it right round Ne-Yo>The Dream

I know, right?, Thursday, 25 September 2008 23:18 (fifteen years ago) link

there is nothing special about YOTG at all.

After The Hurricane (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 25 September 2008 23:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Maybe it just got me at the right moment

I know, right?, Thursday, 25 September 2008 23:24 (fifteen years ago) link

anyway, Dream's second album is called Love vs. Money and is out in December.. that should be good.

After The Hurricane (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 25 September 2008 23:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Great name!

In regards to his new album, The-Dream stated:
“ This album’s gonna be the same thing - a little more beefed up, I’m just gonna give you more. Every album I’m just gonna try to give you more of me, and what I think about certain things... This album is just gonna be the first album on crack, basically.[2]

An encore to the heartbreak track "Nikki" from the first album will also appear on the set. The Dream says his third project will most likely include a song in the vein of "Nikki" as well, as he hopes to release a full album of the Nikki chronicles at some point.

this fuckin guy

favorite cuts include the '60s-inspired "You Aint Sh*t"

tfg pt. 2

and "Kelly's 12 Play," inspired by R. Kelly's debut album.

Dream's new single "Lemme See The Booty":

http://www.zshare.net/audio/50631705135b33d7/

The beat is INSANE. Lil Jon killed it.

Put A Ring On It (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 30 October 2008 00:48 (fifteen years ago) link

The beat sounds like that Usher single that never took off and then wasn't even on his album.

4 Out of 5 Dentists (The Reverend), Thursday, 30 October 2008 03:43 (fifteen years ago) link

This kinda sux

4 Out of 5 Dentists (The Reverend), Thursday, 30 October 2008 03:45 (fifteen years ago) link

"lil jon kills it"

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 October 2008 04:24 (fifteen years ago) link

anyway i'm not surprised that the dude w/ the screename"put a ring on it" is into this song considering they are stylistic twins

i like single ladies and booty but i'm hoping the whole album isn't in this spare, chaotic direction

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 October 2008 04:27 (fifteen years ago) link

This kind of backing just highlights how bad his vocals are. LoveHate mostly worked because it was lush.

4 Out of 5 Dentists (The Reverend), Thursday, 30 October 2008 04:38 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i agree w/ you

i mean the beat is fun to listen to and is interesting and engaging from a technical standpoint, but i want stuff that sounds like "playin in her hair" and "purple kisses" and "nikki"

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 October 2008 04:43 (fifteen years ago) link

lol @ dream backlash

Put A Ring On It (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 30 October 2008 04:48 (fifteen years ago) link

It's not so much that I'm backlashing against him, as this isn't really what I want from him or something he can pull off.

4 Out of 5 Dentists (The Reverend), Thursday, 30 October 2008 05:12 (fifteen years ago) link

...as much as this...

4 Out of 5 Dentists (The Reverend), Thursday, 30 October 2008 05:13 (fifteen years ago) link

um yeah it's not backlash just the song is only kind of good

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 October 2008 05:14 (fifteen years ago) link

well it's kind of great actually so it's more of the fact that i'm not totally enthused about this production trend

i've never had a problem w/ his vocals btw

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 October 2008 05:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i was just joking about the backlash

and yeah, I like his voice so I'm not bothered by the sparse production...this is like "i luv ur gurl," i'm sure the album'll have more of the layered stuff

Hair Weave's Lookin Kinda Purdy (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 30 October 2008 05:30 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i don't disagree about the album as a whole but "booty" and "single ladies" are all over the place and discombobulating (which is cool but can get tiring) whereas "i luv your girl" is really low-key and unobtrusive like snap music

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 October 2008 05:32 (fifteen years ago) link

btw i want to start a petition to re-title the album this:

<3 vs $

B-side "♥ or $"

i think i like a lot of the details more than the song...the echoed "eh...eh....eh" is great. i look fwd to the rest of it growing on me.

lex pretend, Thursday, 30 October 2008 08:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Most of you guys are insannnnne, this track is fucking awesome! MINIMALSEXYELECTROSPRING! EH EH AHHH!!!

Tape Store, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

looking back it's kinda funny that the official dream thread started out as a ts: ne-yo v. the-dream with the-dream losing.

aaron d.g., Wednesday, 5 November 2008 05:14 (fifteen years ago) link

not that funny, when you consider that The-Dream had just been out for a few months at the time, Ne-Yo would probably still win if the poll were done again today, and there are several Ne-Yo threads but pretty much just this one for The-Dream.

some dude, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 05:17 (fifteen years ago) link

i voted dream

yeah, not too impressed w/ that... hopefully it's not on the album.

He changed his single to "Rockin That Thing":

Album pushed back to February...

fart like a whale (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 22 November 2008 05:40 (fifteen years ago) link

he should probably lay off the whole "radio killa" thing until he's got a single that definitely isn't going to flop.
