OTM, 'Faith' works because there's only one of it and it's perfectly timed within the flow of the album. It's like dropping a big anthem at exactly the right point in a DJ set as opposed to just playing back-to-back big anthems with deadening effect.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 12:07 (fourteen years ago)

SMFU is one of my favs; I love how minor it is. It's just this moving little song tucked toward the back of the album, a breather of sorts before the finale

yeah i saw the video on MTV Jams last night and was like "what is this? oh, that song? it's a single? huh?"

Love all the videos for the singles on this album...

Mercer Finn, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 14:21 (fourteen years ago)

i think "smfu" (the non-remix) was a single before "december sky" but none of us noticed it at the time. dawn keeps tweeting cryptic things that make me hopeful that a video for "automatic" might be imminent?

yes yes yes yes

Evan R, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

Oh! the new track has that singing bowls sound that I was loving so much on it.

Also crazy disco string arpeggios. I am loving the attention to detail on the production of this thing.

Dixie Narco Martenot (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

new track is brilliant.

she said on twitter it was swapped from the EP for "change", which was prob the right decision thematically

she's a very lucky girl that "tryna turn me on cos you think i'm operatic" happens to be a better/funnier/truer lyric than "operational" like she was fumbling for

Ahhhh how had I not listened to "wild 'n' young" before now??? I want dawn to make these overwrought percussive epics 4eva.

I'm actually running a little cold on this one. It's repeats a lot of Armor On's motifs without adding much to them

Evan R, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

it's even more structureless, which is reading as a plus to me right now

yeah, strikes me as a refinement if anything

awesome stuff

lol yes. does anyone do remixes that take all the dance elements of a song OUT?

some dude, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

If there were a special edition of Usher's new album that did that, I would be all about it

Evan R, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

O_O this song is amazing

SO MANY amazing sonic and vocal details in this

Evan R, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

yeah this is rather massive

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

this is at least the third really good dubstep r&b song from this year

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

Wow. Every time I think it can't get any better, it does. It's like one of those videogames where it keeps going up to another level and then another one and then another. The ~sonic textures~ ... this really is just a walking exercise in what ~sonic textures~ are and should be. Also the things her voice does at the end. I don't know if it's digital manipulation (and not even the obvious pitch-shifting) or if she's really singing that but the way the main and backing vocals twine together from 3:00 on - I don't even care if it's manipulated but some of those swoops and especially where she goes up the octave at about 3:25 - the vocal arrangements are like some John Tavener kinda shit.

Queue de Cheval (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

xpost what are the other two?

Evan R, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

the one on the usher album and the one on the bieber album

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

i care for u & as long as you love me

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

WCC OTM re: the vocal arrangements, I wish there was more drone layering/vocal line reflection in them to make them go full-on Taverner

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

it should be noted that putting studs on the underside of fake fingernails is pretty next level

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

I love how "I Care For U" teases (threatens?) to drop but never does. I think that's my issue with this new Dawn track; when it actually breaks open it's not so thrilling.

But the sonic details on it really are incredible

Evan R, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

It's just the intricacy of the polyphony that is completely slaying me. There is just such detail, the composition is just staggering.

Queue de Cheval (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the vocals are as mind-blowing as the production details - the sudden space around the whoops at 3:40 is just so...light and airy and clear

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

lot of overstating dubstep itt

r|t|c, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

I'm neutral on the dubstep. I just get slayed by the vocal acrobatics on display, that's a hell of a way to pretty up a blahblahbogstandard drop.

Queue de Cheval (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

lot of overstating dubstep itt

― r|t|c, Tuesday, July 17, 2012 3:02 PM (2 minutes ago) Bookmark

well i'm just using the very general definition. say edm or whatever, idk.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

it really is a tour de force vocal performance - as well as the acrobatics the really subtle touches, like when she murmurs "i ain't ever felt the same since" and you just gasp.

i love how it doesn't do anything as straightforward as just break open from an ominous start - it goes through stages of increasing intensity that culminate in the half-time digital storm.

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

let's not say edm but also let's not have this argument. it's not "a dubstep song" obviously.

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

xxp yeah i know, and the song does go halfstep for a bit, but it just seems part of the modern production language now imo and isnt deserving of being bracketed in a kinda passé-loaded way like it was britney five years ago

idk it wouldnt have really crossed my mind if i hadnt read it here is all
