Excellent shout, now I too have been listening to it all week. Well from Thurs-Today to be accurate.

generally speaking, a new artist signing to a major for their own imprint is a higher risk/higher reward than signing to an established star's imprint. you might not get as much instant attention as you would signing with Wayne/Jeezy/Kanye/etc. but you also don't have to wait in line behind Lil Twist/Gibbs/Pusha T/etc. and coordinate your career with 5 other careers already in progress.

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

is there anything appealing to creating your own imprint aside from theoretically having the power to put your friends on? (and i'm not sure if that's even true tbh.) just seems like unnecessary risk for everyone involved, and sometimes just totally pointless (thinking of earl sweatshirt getting his own imprint w/ wherever he signed).

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 14:52 (twelve years ago) link

i understand not wanting to sign w/ another rapper's imprint... that sounds pretty shitty for a new artist unless you're someone like ice burgandy who wouldn't be signing w/ a major anyway. i'm talking about just signing w/ a label outright.

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 14:54 (twelve years ago) link

i think helping your hypeman put out a solo record is kind of a secondary concern really -- you're not gonna get to do that unless you're pretty successful either way. i think of it more in terms of, Wiz created his own franchise by not signing under a bigger star, which is how it usually happens. Drake and Nicki got to do it while signing under a big star, but that's the exception to the rule (and they also aligned w/ YM before having a huge buzz).

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:56 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think really ANY rapper anymore is just "signed to interscope" or def jam or whatever without a go-between imprint. that's just not the way the industry has worked for, like, 10 years now.

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:56 (twelve years ago) link

right, alright

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 15:00 (twelve years ago) link

there's probably also a chicken-and-egg thing with the death of rap A&Ring -- every rapper who wants to be Jay-Z has a guy next to him who wants to be Dame Dash so they walk into the building with the team they want to run their career before they sign

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 15:02 (twelve years ago) link

like that Joey Bada$$, man what an old school Black Moon throwback

i dunno, m@tt you have any history of family illness? you're gonna be alive at least another 40 years, right?

some dude, Monday, 18 June 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

i feel pretty good thanks :)

i hope to live to see roc marciano's grandson flow over a vampire zombie pete rock beat

seriously though the max minelli thing is so great, def would appeal to trv kvlt southern rap fans

i mean joey bada$$ isn't doing anything that new, but he can rap and the beat is solid. i'm not like freaking out about it, but tbh sometime s i feel like stuff like this is called out as comfort food derivative stuff when you could say that about tons of non NYC stuff on this thread

new Juvenile seems pretty good so far!

Love the song "Power" with the Chill Rob G/Snap! sample :)

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 15:49 (twelve years ago) link

yeah "power" is fantastic

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 June 2012 15:51 (twelve years ago) link

actually dudes i was gonna start a list thread but I think that's like my single favorite micro-genre of music - raps songs where there's a repeated vocal sample that finishes lines for the rappers, like "oh boy", this song, etc

that's literally the greatest thing in music history

Article is otm, but regionalism has been dying for a long time

Cfe: dre, em, and 50's early 00s stuff was all basically the big screen dre expensive sounding aesthetic... And 50 def sounded a little more southern than was typical of nyc..or jigga what by jay and big pimpin was him getting at the south

Or timbo/missy def had an aesthetic that didn't seem tied to a region and tim would make tracks for everyone

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 19:25 (twelve years ago) link

article is incredibly myopic w/ its examples & that fundamentally undercuts trying to say something at all relevant about the subject

Juvenile album is pretty boring to me, but the Wacko/Skip section toward the end kinda redeems it. been hearing "Nolia Clap" a lot lately and thinking about what a classic it is.

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:07 (twelve years ago) link

From a historical perspective, Ice Cubes Amerikkkas Most Wanted is probably the most important album in the decline of regionalism, him going over to the bomb squad and doing a verse on PEs burn hollywood burn felt pretty important at the time, esp when east/west tensions were high and cube was perceived as gangsta and pe perceived as conscious

Also kool g raps live and let die embraced thicker west coast beats and had sir jinx productions

Actually the source review of ready to die was framed as biggie taking the dominant west coast style and adding an east coat spin to it

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:20 (twelve years ago) link

What about LL's Bigger And Deffer? He recorded that with some LA producers.

fanute gingrich (The Reverend), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:26 (twelve years ago) link

Juve album is pretty garbage really. 1st half outside of Power is a total loss. Still Here beat was ruined by the hook. idk, maybe 3 good tracks total.

Gotye Sports (It's In The Name) (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

Rev, yeah the LA Posse I think, still LA didn't really have a distinct identity then, or not unless it was super local and underground

So I don't think it was perceived in the same way, or that anyone thought LL was changing his style

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

LA had that whole Egyptian Lover/Uncle Jamm's Army/World Class Wreckin Cru electro-hop steez.

fanute gingrich (The Reverend), Thursday, 21 June 2012 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah but I don't know how much that traveled

I think around 84, 85 you could go to any city and kids were dressing like run dmc & LL

plus nothing on bigger and deffer sounded electro
