shortly before the release of Treasure, the Cocteau Twins got a court order forbidding writers from using the description "tedious New Age" in reviews. the music press was initially outraged at the censorship, but journalists soon got crafty and learned to write in code. it soon became common knowledge that whenever a reviewer wrote something like, "the song drifts off into an ethereal haze", what he really meant was "the song drifts off into a tedious New Age haze", etc.

1567. in her senile later years, protest singer Malvina Reynolds would often write the same song multiple times without even realizing it. she'd come to her publisher with a new song called "Teensy Boxes", and he'd have to tell her, "why Malvina, this is just a rewrite of 'Little Boxes'. you wrote this 15 years ago." but it was no use, and she only got worse over time. from December 31, 1975 until her death in 1978, she wrote over 1,000 songs and poems, but all of them were titled "Don't Lick that Envelope" and all of them began with the words

it's bad enough to pay your rent,
but the price of stamps just went up 3 cents
a postcard soon will cost ten dollars
but the postmaster's dog wears diamond collars
don't lick that enevelope, it's made of gold
don't lick that envelope, it's made of gold

to this day, nobody has ever recorded it.

1574. Harry Chapin recorded all 10 of his albums during a manic, coke-fueled, 96-hour-long recording session between October 14 and 18, 1971. he died in a car crash later that year. all of his releases were posthumous, and he still has about 100 albums' worth of material in the vaults (though the last 48 hours of tape is just Harry yelling "my boy was just like me" in various comedy voices (mostly wolves) while someone plucks a sitar in the background)

1575. Neutral Milk Hotel originally conceived In the Aeroplane Over the Sea as a concept album about Jeff Mangum's love for the 20-year-old Patty Hearst. The band politely sought Patty's approval by sending her a demo of the album, but all they got in response were libel threats from Patty's attorney. Intimidated, Jeff hurriedly rewrote many of his lyrics, replacing all the Patty Hearst references with Anne Frank references. an alleged demo version of "Frisco, 1974" has been widely circulated online.

1596. "The Amp Got Shot in the Woofer Cause of Drugs" initially appeared as the B-side to Sly and the Family Stone's 1971 hit, "Family Affair". This edition of single was pulled within days of its October 16 release date, however, when the FDA discovered that the vinyl used contained dangerously high levels of several toxic ketone compounds. When the single was re-released on 6 November 1971, the new pressing was backed with "Luv n' Haight". "The Amp Got Shot in the Woofer Cause of Drugs" has not since been released or compiled, and the few known copies of the original single (the volatile toxic compounds having long ago evaporated) trade for upwards of $1,000.

Pat Finn, Monday, 29 April 2013 00:18 (eleven years ago) link

fuck yeah. damn close anyway. and whether or not he did, he ought to have recorded it from bed. riot story i always heard (provenance dubious at best) is that the songs attains their softened, bleary-eyed vibe as the product of endless re-recordings on the same master. sly would bring a new girl into the studio "every night" and have her re-track this or that vocal part as part of some drug-fueled seduction routine. like check it baby, you're gonna be a star, see. stories...

In the village of Kapkatet, Kenya in the late 1990′s, members of the Kipsigi tribe somehow came across a few records of Sinead O'Connor. Convinced that such strange sounds could not come from a human, the voice was attributed to a centaur-like spirit they called Chenedokona. This half-man half-antelope is honored in fertility rites where young Kipsigi maidens dance seductively to the Sinead O'Connor records, begging her to join them in a leaping dance in hopes that Chenedokona will jump completely out of her clothes.
