i won't doubt kanye's desire to rip something off from every hot young rapper but it seems a bit generous to credit the hook on "mercy" to asap rocky instead of the entire sound & culture that it (including asap rocky) is spawned from

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 June 2012 22:56 (twelve years ago) link

the-dream has done screwed hooks a bit no?

anyone listened to self made vol 2?

hardhouse banter (tpp), Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:02 (twelve years ago) link

I think its evident that bringing a screwed hook in 2012 is a reference to asap, unless youre a texas rapper

"anyone listened to self made vol 2?"

i did, prolly won't do it again.

sisilafami, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

eh, it's in every rap listener's vocabulary as much as sped-up soul samples and fucking record scratches at this point (xpost)

didn't kayne have a bunch of screwed shit on MBDSLYTVDSP?

President Keyes, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 01:05 (twelve years ago) link

A lot of rappers were alive before this year so they might remember ye olden tymes when hooks were screwedethed and chopp-ed.

Asap must have been a big inspiration for dean

im not even an asap fan but its obv 2 me that he 'brought back' houston ish to teh cool crowd that kanye is interested in impressing w his b&w lambo merci videos of rappers dancing around in parking garages.

i cant think of a noted critical or charting rapper who's used an S&C hook in a major song in the past several years. cmon. trends come in to fashion & go out again

it's hilarious to finally hear what Stalley actually sounds like -- there are 50 uncharismatic 'likeable' rappers in every city that rap better than this

some dude, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 14:59 (twelve years ago) link

yeah the transition from gunplay to him on "power circle" is a bit of a letdown

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 June 2012 15:13 (twelve years ago) link

Damn that Alpoko Don is great. Thanks for the link

not hooks, but there are tons of kanye songs where he screws a line here or there for emphasis, including "marvin & chardonnay" and "jigga's in paris" last year, so it just seems weird to me to hear "mercy" and think 'oh where did he get THAT idea, who must he be playing catch-up with'

some dude, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 23:12 (twelve years ago) link

im not saying it was that he was playing catch up per se but cmon wasnt it co produced by hudson fucking mohawke

littledotheyknow (D-40), Thursday, 28 June 2012 00:31 (twelve years ago) link

who?

some dude, Thursday, 28 June 2012 00:31 (twelve years ago) link

i just mean hes obv at this point very much a keep-up-with-whats-trendy type producer & has been for a few years, and half the choruses on that asap record that shut down ny press from, remember, less than a year ago, were a strange disconnected S&C style similar to this, i dont really think its that farfetched

littledotheyknow (D-40), Thursday, 28 June 2012 00:32 (twelve years ago) link

hudson mohawke is a critically acclaimed british producer iirc who does, like, i dunno, its not dubstep, but its electronic beats without rapping

littledotheyknow (D-40), Thursday, 28 June 2012 00:32 (twelve years ago) link

I can't believe someone did a hudson hawke reference as a name

listen kanye is sad desperate old trend-chaser, i just think screw is rap public domain. it's like when anyone who said "swag" was suddenly biting odd future even though there had been a bunch of huge songs w/ that word in it 2 years before anyone heard of those guys.

some dude, Thursday, 28 June 2012 00:39 (twelve years ago) link

actually i feel dumb for not thinking of this earlier but "a milli" is really the biggest slowed-vocal-loop song of the last few years and a lot of its many knockoff songs followed suit, although obviously the way it's used there isn't really the same as the trad screwed hook thing

goonrise zingdom (some dude), Thursday, 28 June 2012 01:04 (twelve years ago) link

can someone recommend some new rap 4 me that isn't charting but is actually cool & interesting & happening & not just blog curio stuff. obv nothing from chicago needed

feeling kind of aimless, need something interesting & nothing's grabbing me

most of his tracks are crazier/wackier heavy synth shit, but he's at his best when he reins it in. there there's TNGHT which is more of a 'let's work with rappers/get money' project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygKLQ1ItVGY

only reason i'm half-interested in TNGHT is cause of lunice

The Reverend, Friday, 29 June 2012 20:36 (twelve years ago) link

aw rev. yeah he's made tons of ridiculous (as in silly) tracks but i think he's super talented. 'butter' had like three good tracks but they're good enough to carry the record. we can take this to another thread though.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 29 June 2012 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

i generally don't like any of those uk producers but i like some hudson mohawke tracks
