SO MANY amazing sonic and vocal details in this

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

Here's a Soundcloud link: http://soundcloud.com/rapup/pretty-wicked-things-dawn-richard

Evan R, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

yeah this is rather massive

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

this is at least the third really good dubstep r&b song from this year

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

Wow. Every time I think it can't get any better, it does. It's like one of those videogames where it keeps going up to another level and then another one and then another. The ~sonic textures~ ... this really is just a walking exercise in what ~sonic textures~ are and should be. Also the things her voice does at the end. I don't know if it's digital manipulation (and not even the obvious pitch-shifting) or if she's really singing that but the way the main and backing vocals twine together from 3:00 on - I don't even care if it's manipulated but some of those swoops and especially where she goes up the octave at about 3:25 - the vocal arrangements are like some John Tavener kinda shit.

Queue de Cheval (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

xpost what are the other two?

Evan R, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

the one on the usher album and the one on the bieber album

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

i care for u & as long as you love me

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

WCC OTM re: the vocal arrangements, I wish there was more drone layering/vocal line reflection in them to make them go full-on Taverner

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

it should be noted that putting studs on the underside of fake fingernails is pretty next level

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

I love how "I Care For U" teases (threatens?) to drop but never does. I think that's my issue with this new Dawn track; when it actually breaks open it's not so thrilling.

But the sonic details on it really are incredible

Evan R, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

It's just the intricacy of the polyphony that is completely slaying me. There is just such detail, the composition is just staggering.

Queue de Cheval (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the vocals are as mind-blowing as the production details - the sudden space around the whoops at 3:40 is just so...light and airy and clear

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

lot of overstating dubstep itt

r|t|c, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

I'm neutral on the dubstep. I just get slayed by the vocal acrobatics on display, that's a hell of a way to pretty up a blahblahbogstandard drop.

well i'm just using the very general definition. say edm or whatever, idk.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

it really is a tour de force vocal performance - as well as the acrobatics the really subtle touches, like when she murmurs "i ain't ever felt the same since" and you just gasp.

i love how it doesn't do anything as straightforward as just break open from an ominous start - it goes through stages of increasing intensity that culminate in the half-time digital storm.

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

let's not say edm but also let's not have this argument. it's not "a dubstep song" obviously.

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

xxp yeah i know, and the song does go halfstep for a bit, but it just seems part of the modern production language now imo and isnt deserving of being bracketed in a kinda passé-loaded way like it was britney five years ago

idk it wouldnt have really crossed my mind if i hadnt read it here is all

r|t|c, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

and nor did it for the ursh/bieb jams

eh ok maybe the bieb

kinda felt like thunder, kinda felt like rain
kinda felt like him and the storm was the same

r|t|c, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

This is how amazing this song is: I went and listened to the leaked Thom Yorke solo track just now. And then I turned it off and actually came back and listened to this Dawn Richards track instead. That's right. This song is stronger than lust.

i think i'm realizing that my ear picking this stuff out is from coming up in the midwest hearing shitty post-hardcore bands. so many raggedy ass halftime breakdowns, i can't even explain to you. whether it's dubsep's 'fault' idk, but don't tell me skrlx himself doesn't know!

goole, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

anyway i'm pretty far afield now, carry on.

goole, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

no hold on what bands are these, i'm intrigued

r|t|c, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

cos i am hearing dubstep drive like jehu in my head and tbrr i'm liking it

r|t|c, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

you say that now...

goole, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

can i just say how remorseful i am that i let the revelation that Dawn studied marine biology come and go without making a "porpoise built" joke

ahhh there it was, staring me in the face

r|t|c, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 12:33 (thirteen years ago)

was it you that captioned a picture of chris brown with a dolphin as "you got fins and i got fins" back in the day? hahaha

Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 13:03 (thirteen years ago)

lol i'd totally forgotten about that! iirc that took an... unedifying length of time to come up with

r|t|c, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 13:30 (thirteen years ago)

in the absence of any records of the incident, reproduced here from memory are the lyrics of a young chris brown's song to the stranded thames whale as performed on mtv c2006:

i'm on the london eye, over the river thames
singing to the whale
rescued by the officers
but he aint going to jail

the whale later died

isn't she!

The Reverend, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

when "pretty wicked things" came out, ann powers tweeted that it was as though aaliyah and tori amos had had a baby, which i didn't get at first, until i remembered this amos song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aD4egZFxw8

it's the same...percussive/vocal frenzy, that sense of flux and malleability and confusion and something massive at stake but you're not sure what

lex pretend, Thursday, 30 August 2012 09:38 (thirteen years ago)

She's great - and intriguing. Pretty typical of her to start the video off with the least "commercial" of the two songs though - as if she's trying to make sure that Faith doesn't become a hit.

ehh they were already on a song together on Last Train To Paris -- if this is an indication that industry types are taking her seriously as a solo artist then good
