this is at least the third really good dubstep r&b song from this year

Wow. Every time I think it can't get any better, it does. It's like one of those videogames where it keeps going up to another level and then another one and then another. The ~sonic textures~ ... this really is just a walking exercise in what ~sonic textures~ are and should be. Also the things her voice does at the end. I don't know if it's digital manipulation (and not even the obvious pitch-shifting) or if she's really singing that but the way the main and backing vocals twine together from 3:00 on - I don't even care if it's manipulated but some of those swoops and especially where she goes up the octave at about 3:25 - the vocal arrangements are like some John Tavener kinda shit.

it should be noted that putting studs on the underside of fake fingernails is pretty next level

I love how "I Care For U" teases (threatens?) to drop but never does. I think that's my issue with this new Dawn track; when it actually breaks open it's not so thrilling.

But the sonic details on it really are incredible

It's just the intricacy of the polyphony that is completely slaying me. There is just such detail, the composition is just staggering.

yeah the vocals are as mind-blowing as the production details - the sudden space around the whoops at 3:40 is just so...light and airy and clear

I'm neutral on the dubstep. I just get slayed by the vocal acrobatics on display, that's a hell of a way to pretty up a blahblahbogstandard drop.

well i'm just using the very general definition. say edm or whatever, idk.

it really is a tour de force vocal performance - as well as the acrobatics the really subtle touches, like when she murmurs "i ain't ever felt the same since" and you just gasp.

i love how it doesn't do anything as straightforward as just break open from an ominous start - it goes through stages of increasing intensity that culminate in the half-time digital storm.

let's not say edm but also let's not have this argument. it's not "a dubstep song" obviously.

xxp yeah i know, and the song does go halfstep for a bit, but it just seems part of the modern production language now imo and isnt deserving of being bracketed in a kinda passé-loaded way like it was britney five years ago

This is how amazing this song is: I went and listened to the leaked Thom Yorke solo track just now. And then I turned it off and actually came back and listened to this Dawn Richards track instead. That's right. This song is stronger than lust.

i think i'm realizing that my ear picking this stuff out is from coming up in the midwest hearing shitty post-hardcore bands. so many raggedy ass halftime breakdowns, i can't even explain to you. whether it's dubsep's 'fault' idk, but don't tell me skrlx himself doesn't know!

it's the same...percussive/vocal frenzy, that sense of flux and malleability and confusion and something massive at stake but you're not sure what

She's great - and intriguing. Pretty typical of her to start the video off with the least "commercial" of the two songs though - as if she's trying to make sure that Faith doesn't become a hit.
