Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 17:47 (eleven years ago) link

Noooo I was so looking forward to Kraftwerk!!!

Number 69 should be a 69 Love Songs poll.

I'd run a Merritt poll if were interested.

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:17 (eleven years ago) link

Would vote in a Merritt poll. Especially if it were a top 69.

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:20 (eleven years ago) link

Same here! 69 Love Songs has been done though, iirc.

daavid, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:21 (eleven years ago) link

And someone please do Kraftwerk!

daavid, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:22 (eleven years ago) link

Could also just do a poll of top 69 love songs, though that could get unwieldy.

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:22 (eleven years ago) link

well i'd want to include all the mag fields + other merritt bands and i guess side projects (i haven't heard things like the opera or whatever that was)

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:23 (eleven years ago) link

Well, I don't think any those opera tracks have much of a chance to chart, TBH.

daavid, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:27 (eleven years ago) link

It should definitely be everything Merritt has done though. Some great 6ths and Future Bible Heroes stuff out there.

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:29 (eleven years ago) link

well go ahead and put me down for the Merritt poll. unless of course I totally bungle the Clash one.

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:30 (eleven years ago) link

xp Definitely, and let's not forget the Gothic Archies! The "Series of Unfortunate Events" tracks were mostly disposable but the first (an only) EP is classic.

daavid, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 03:32 (eleven years ago) link

some great gothic archies stuff, and just him under his solo name had "maria maria maria" and "one april day"

More like my favorite Katy Perry song.

Claudia Schiffer Kills Frog (Leee), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

I had a thought earlier today that "60s/70s singer-songwriters" might have been a better poll than Joni Mitchell solo...it would be interesting to see how that canon shakes out, "At Seventeen" vs "Fire and Rain" vs "Help Me" etc

still, Mitchell turned out good I thought

WmC, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

It was nice going through a thread about Joni Mitchell without having to read about Carly Simon.

pplains, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 16:53 (eleven years ago) link

i know that it's silly to be discussing it so far in advance but i've been wondering about instead of an emo poll it might be cooler to do a new pornographers and solo albums poll. any thoughts? (i could do both too at different times...)

Mordy, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 16:56 (eleven years ago) link

a folk poll would be good

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

btw nominations end today for the 70s poll
If anyone would like to take part that would be great 1970-1979 WTF - The Hard 'n' Heavy 'n' Loud + Krautrock, Arty, Noisy, Weird, Funky, Punky Shit - Albums Poll! Nominations ! (ends Oct 17 you slack bastards - jjjusten edit)

William and Shakey i think might enjoy it. Please have a look everybody as you're all welcome!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 17:01 (eleven years ago) link

I don't see that in the queue

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 17:03 (eleven years ago) link

well it's not part of this series of polls, true, neither were the 00s or 90s electronic polls or the 80s rock poll, but everyone is welcome to join in them all.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 17:11 (eleven years ago) link

A little update on The Neptunes poll: the deadline was supposed to be this midnight, but since I'm not really able to start the results thread until around Wednesday, I'm pushing it down to the end of the weekend. Can I have the thread's title corrected? Also, what whas the average ballot count for previous polls? I've received 10 ballots, seems kind of low.

V79, Friday, 19 October 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

Somewhere in the high twenties is about average I'd guess. Neptunes' demographic is largely a non-voting demographic though - iirc there was a hiphop poll that really struggled - so I guess you'll probably have to make do with fewer. Just shorten the countdown, nbd.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 19 October 2012 21:38 (eleven years ago) link

That's a shame, but unfortunately I its not something I could vote on. Perhaps you could post on a few relevant threads and ask people to vote?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 19 October 2012 21:46 (eleven years ago) link

just don't try it on twitter

Ismael Klata, Friday, 19 October 2012 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

i'm not gonna be able to do the madonna poll i'm afraid, work stuff is gonna get in the way. apologies. can anyone help a brother out and take it up for me? it remains a poll i'd like to vote in.

Fixed.

Put me down for Madonna then, I guess. I was originally going to do that before I switched to Guided By Voices.

I've been thinking about a modern r&b poll. like post-soul/disco. what do people think? i was thinking if i do it next year and start it from 1983+ then it could be a best r&b albums of the past 30 years or something.

how many did the timbo poll get? neptunes should get similar. it is way more of a pop/r&b poll than the overall hiphop one.

a hoy hoy, Saturday, 20 October 2012 12:47 (eleven years ago) link

I'd love it, but I reckon it'd need, if not the full nominations process, then at least to clear the decks while it runs. It's the most significant genre poll you could run for the recent era imo and shouldn't risk getting lost in the crowd.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 20 October 2012 12:58 (eleven years ago) link

i got 36 ballots for the Timbo poll

some dude, Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:17 (eleven years ago) link

I'm surprised it was so high, that's really good.

Two tips for improving turnout:
- make it as easy as possible to vote. Ballots of twenty can be done without having to go away and write things down; ballots of thirty-plus probably can't
- bump the voting thread a lot, make it an interesting discussion. I don't think long deadlines draw many more people in, but getting engaged with the process might

Other than that, I'm guessing that easily-defined catalogues/themes will more easily attract voters. To my mind Neptunes are (still) pretty nebulous, so it's natural that they'll be on the low side.

But twenty ballots is certainly enough to make for a decent top twenty or thirty countdown (Manics got by with 16 iirc); Neptunes should end up pretty close to that.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:30 (eleven years ago) link

So what's currently happening here.

pplains, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 14:35 (eleven years ago) link

Good question. Unfortunately I missed the request to change the deadline in the Neptunes thread title before I quit modding, but I don't know that it would have changed the number of ballots anyway. I'll bump the Neptunes thread and try to roust V79.

You should stay mod for this thread only

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 15:23 (eleven years ago) link

The deadline extension did get a few people to vote. I'm way behind on my regional thug/r&b rolling thread listenings and don't want to lose my bookmarks - maybe a good place for someone to kerr about votes?

Could we get away with a Mountain Goats poll? They are a band ilx loves and have a massive back catalogue but otoh

WmC's been doing a great job keeping these polls coordinated.

clemenza, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 18:17 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks! The only real mod-advantage is being able to delete old versions of the ongoing list so the thread stays more easily scrollable. I might sneak into my mod account every few months to clean this thread up if stet doesn't delete it.

a hoy hoy, I think the "but otoh" would take precedence re: a MtGoats poll, enthusiasm and catalogue size notwithstanding. It would feel a little weird, I think.
