lol @ j0rdan buying into 'if hitting her was so wrong how come she w/ me now?' defense. good squad never disappoints.

the next time he hurts her she will most likely be secretive about it so he doesn't have to go through such a terrible ordeal again.

not from the standpoint of "was beating rihanna alright?" of course, but just in terms of whether or not people should be continued to be outraged over her having a relationship with him

i'm not sure threatening to shart on someone exactly qualifies as threatening violent assault.

yeah you know he said he'd fart on her while she blew him but he never said he'd MAKE her do it, good point. And who knows maybe the face shitting would be consensual too?

the whole thing is just incredibly tiring, the constant feedback loop of people flipping out over them trolling the public and on and on

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2012 03:11 (eleven years ago) link

feels like real life example of old atwood quote 'men are afraid that women will laugh at them, women are afraid that men will kill them', only according to team breezy/goon squad the former fear is the only one that's legit.

or she

i deliberately left her ordeal out, i doubt it has ever registered with him and if she's back with him i think her assessment of it must be skewed as well. it's horribly confusing to be harmed by someone you love, and you have to reduce the cognitive dissonance somehow, so you focus on your own controllable behaviour instead of the other unpredictable party's and tailor your future dealings accordingly. that is why "just ask rihanna if she mad" has no currency.

fair enough -- i guess the way i look at it, i just don't see what good is being done at this point by, for instance, comedians harassing chris brown for an entire year on twitter. i don't feel bad for chris brown, of course, nor do i think that he should be free of being reminded how much of a horrible asshole he is, but with the turn that their relationship has taken lately, it just feels like to me like the tone of the entire conversation around his abuse is doing more harm than anything if people out there genuinely care about the well being of rihanna (in some instances, i doubt this). clearly, years of hectoring chris brown has had the opposite effect on both of them -- she's back with him and writing songs called "nobody's business" and he's become an even more gross person. obviously there are other factors at work -- inherent ones, surely -- but the public's attempts at driving a wedge between the two of them has -- at least in part -- brought them back together. and i guess i sometimes feel like it would be the best if people writ large realized that it's out of the public's hands -- if she wants to be with him right now there are things that people that are actually in her life can do (or try to do), but things the public clearly cannot do. so maybe people should stop trying. i dunno, maybe that's totally off base.

also on a related note, the entire culture of constantly shaming chris brown on twitter has irked me for a while. part of it is that i have suspicions that for some people it's pretty self-serving (favstar bot congratulates you on your 250 star tweet etc), but i also get that twitter allows people to get out very real anger directly to chris brown and that's totally valid. that said, i guess if people truly would like to see a reformed chris brown, i'm not sure that calling him a piece of shit on twitter for an entire year is helping that happen in any way. nor has the tone of that rhetoric helped influence the opinions & minds of team breezy breezy who defend chris brown to the death, mostly teenagers (and mostly women, i think) who could find (or already have found) themselves in rihanna's position. so even in terms of furthering positive discussions about domestic abuse, i think it's completely and utterly failing if not, again, having the opposite intended effect.

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2012 13:39 (eleven years ago) link

this is putting the cart before the horse - you don't get the benefit of a doubt before you actually start acting contrite, remorseful, changed in the way you comport yourself in public

乒乓, Monday, 26 November 2012 14:01 (eleven years ago) link

^^^ OTM

Unless of course you believe that wearing a $350K gold chain that says "OOPS!" in cartoon letters is a genuine act of contrition

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Monday, 26 November 2012 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

sure. i guess the fact that they're celebrities really complicates the matter just in terms of what role the public has or should have or "deserves" to have.

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2012 14:10 (eleven years ago) link

To be honest, most of my vitriol is aimed at a criminal justice system that let CB basically get away with attempted murder (read the police report if you haven't already) and an entertainment industry that welcomed that li'l rascal back into the fold with open arms after the heinous thing he did. My reaction to the whole situation is similar to the one I had after a rapist and murderer was recently released after only serving 20 years and subsequently moved back to my college town: I'm hesitant to demonize someone who's served their time, but I also think, to the extent that it might save a life, it's socially responsible to keep that narrative from being forgotten.

Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Monday, 26 November 2012 14:12 (eleven years ago) link

but the public's attempts at driving a wedge between the two of them has -- at least in part -- brought them back together.

don't think this is necessarily the case -- remember they were chilling at Diddy's house together less than a month after the incident. and the remixes last year came out the same month that the restraining order was lifted. so i think their time apart was purely for PR/legal reasons and they were never really on the outs (other than briefly when, like, she unfollowed him on twitter for a while because he called her a slut on a horrible freestyle).

The Doc Morbama (some dude), Monday, 26 November 2012 14:13 (eleven years ago) link

well substitute "even closer together" then or something. i don't think that the role of the public has had a null effect.

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2012 14:17 (eleven years ago) link

xp You're being ridiculous Whiney. Responding to an idiot's abuse on Twitter by mocking the spelling is tactic #1. It may be a cheap shot but it's not race-specific.

Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 26 November 2012 14:18 (eleven years ago) link

it's socially responsible to keep that narrative from being forgotten.

otm - especially when there are such strong forces (the entertainment industry) attempting to elide the narrative with a more palatable doomed-romance one. j0rdan, little of what you say is strictly wrong but you're looking at way too narrow a frame - if it was as simple as attempting to stop rihanna specifically from dating chris brown specifically, sure, it's beyond our power and tut-tutting at them from afar is a bad look. but when i say that shrugging your shoulders and acting like we should move on is an abdication of responsibility, i'm not talking about your responsibility to rihanna - i'm talking about our collective responsibility on domestic violence. going along with the narrative rihanna, chris brown and def jam are flogging is to be complicit in it, and you're deluding yourself if you think just shrugging your shoulders about it is an adequate response

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 26 November 2012 14:18 (eleven years ago) link

also if the public has brought them together it's because they've seen that their fans haven't deserted them to the extent that collaborating with each other is commercial suicide. i don't really feel like the disapproving voices are in the majority, here.

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 26 November 2012 14:19 (eleven years ago) link

and sure, constantly yelling at anyone over twitter is not a good look (though what the hell do you expect from COMEDIANS aka the scum of the earth and the lowest worms) - but really the people i wanna lock in a room and yell at forever are the people at def jam, everyone in the INDUSTRY who allowed it to happen

yeah this is totally true... i just wonder if goading chris brown into a fight on twitter is the best way at keeping the larger narrative (not simply that chris brown is a legendary douche) alive.

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2012 14:26 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sure chris brown was the victim in that exchange

乒乓, Monday, 26 November 2012 14:27 (eleven years ago) link

well no it's not, but if your response to it is to snark about how ineffective it is, that's not exactly keeping the larger narrative alive, and it often comes across - not nec you here - as effectively saying "it's pointless doing/saying anything about this situation because it won't stop her going back to him"
