yeah sequencing is great
― sisilafami, Monday, 14 January 2013 17:49 (thirteen years ago)
Seriously, flows like no tomorrow. Currently on "Gleaux."

300 is so good
― sisilafami, Monday, 14 January 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)
this is kinda cheesy in parts. i cant deal with 'in your eyes'
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 14 January 2013 17:53 (thirteen years ago)
love "Break Of Dawn," so shamelessly gooey

doesn't work in canada and i am SO UPSET.
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 14 January 2013 18:08 (thirteen years ago)
This album's length really works in its favor; this is a satisfying one to lose yourself in. So much beautiful empty space, especially in that final stretch
― Evan and I'm Gettin' It (Evan R), Monday, 14 January 2013 18:13 (thirteen years ago)
yeah it's not quite as sprawling as Last Train To Paris but it's probably more immersive.
― some dude, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)
we could have parted seas just / to walk on the floor of oceans / ohhhh
― r|t|c, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:26 (thirteen years ago)
like damn yo
hah classic example of the alleged iffy songwriting that actually sounds rad i guess
― r|t|c, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:29 (thirteen years ago)
and this love could've built up armies / of nations unstoppable / ohhhh
so apt that the album ends with dawn actually forming her own nation state
― lex pretend, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
xp eh, I still think her battle motifs are tacky and not very imaginative, but I can let that slide since that's not really the hook here, and it's carry-over criticism from Armor On
― Evan and I'm Gettin' It (Evan R), Monday, 14 January 2013 18:34 (thirteen years ago)
the opening line of "300" is "i feel like leonidas / battling the titans / a thousand soldiers against one sword" which appears to be a reference to either the film or to some sort of role playing game
the more OTT the battle motifs the better, i don't know how you can have an issue with this
― lex pretend, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:35 (thirteen years ago)
It's the film, yes.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)
(Strictly speaking the comic but anyway.)
battle motifs: Tacky? or tactical?
― Drugs A. Money, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:37 (thirteen years ago)
a comic, of course it is
― lex pretend, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:38 (thirteen years ago)
strictly strictly speaking Greek history and legend
― some dude, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:39 (thirteen years ago)
i cant be the only one who finds this a lil samey relative to LTTP
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 14 January 2013 18:40 (thirteen years ago)
xp the greek king leonidas (historical) never fought the titans (mythical) though
― lex pretend, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:46 (thirteen years ago)
Dawn's stuff feels pretty distinct from Dirty Money to me at this point -- if any 2 records risk crowding each other's space it's Golden Heart and Armor On
― some dude, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:48 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i'm not pretending to be an expert. did frank miller invent that part of the myth though? xp
― some dude, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)
i think she threw those together just for the rhyme.
― goole, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:51 (thirteen years ago)
like that she interpolates both phil collins and peter gabriel over the course of the record, so i can just think of it as prog
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 14 January 2013 18:59 (thirteen years ago)
at a couple of points there are these almost old-agey computer music stabs, an ancient-future music, then with the 300 deal, yes, what a progger would be mining these days, if they existed.
which they don't.

Proggers exist, but they think Dream Theater is hip and cutting edge.

man. i liked 86 but didn't love it in the context of it being the first single post-armor on.
but 3/4 of the way through GoldenHeart oh my goodness it's fucking devastating.

the outro's really pretty as are other parts of this album but especially the outro
― The Reverend, Monday, 14 January 2013 21:26 (thirteen years ago)
it's p hard to fuck up claire de lune tbh, probably the greatest song ever written (no lie)

outro is wonderful, seriously one of the most affecting and satisfying finales to an album i can recall i think
pure pure pure after-the-curtain-falls lonely spotlight schmaltz but so good
even its borrowedness is meaningful
― r|t|c, Monday, 14 January 2013 21:30 (thirteen years ago)
the 'pretty wicked things'/'goldenheart' suite p much completely rejects this reading of dawn as mildly autistic fantasist
the sorrow for the "fallen tales" of the former, then the yearning once more for "white knights, white horses" of the latter is a prism you can read the entire album through
― r|t|c, Monday, 14 January 2013 21:45 (thirteen years ago)
The final third of this album is fantastic, although I'm a bit underwhelmed by the rest, especially the first third. Think it's something to do with Dawn's vocal presence, like she's gone for for stateliness over the snap of Armor On and Tell Tale Heart. Like she sounds like she's floating over the top of the battle surrounded by a disc of light when on previous records she'd have been right in the fray.

― lex pretend, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 11:44 (thirteen years ago)
the album actually took several listens for me to really get my head around/into it (partly because i only had an unmastered copy for ages) but it was def the less in-your-face final third that took the most time for me to fall for.
i loved "bombs" and "automatic", but even on armor on, by the end of the ep you'd pretty much left them behind, and it would feel odd for similar songs with that hip-hop snap to be on goldenheart...
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 11:47 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah I'm definitely prepared for it to open up before me, but the final third clicked immediately, maybe because the vocal melodies are stronger. I'm kind of missing the rhythmic tricksiness of Armor On as well, a lot of this one is very... hymnal, even over the bangers. Northern Lights is great though.
