And yeh, cheers musically! I'll be going through all of that lot soon enough, seeing if I really did miss out on some stuff I'd have liked.
I think the two highest-placed metal tracks in this poll were ones I nommed :D and one of which (Torche) came fairly close to placing.

Ahmed Fathi is a singer and oudist from Yemen (I think it's Yemen) and I voted for him because Sundar nominated him and I figured, okay, what the heck, lets vote for Ahmed Fathi then. But the track in question is just part of this wonderful collection that resulted from an oud festival:

It's a good piece though.
(I never expected it to actually make the list. I guess this is the best evidence that this poll needed more participants.)

from the early days of the "blind" hype sometime in late '07, i've been trying to share the enthusiasm and have never mustered more than mild appreciation. it's ok, but, you know, it's no ting tings ... (i did have "hercules theme" on my ballot, tho)
(and oh yeah THANKS! musically. nice job.)

sacrificed my jazmine trax in the hope that the album will place...couldn't decide between my favourites ('in love with another man' and 'lions, tigers & bears') and the most likely track to place ('need u bad') anyway

This list is shockingly terrible.. Each year the ILM singles poll usually includes at least a few hidden gems I had missed out on, which I was kind of counting on.. but this poll proves it. there were no hidden gems. 2008 = worst year for singles that has ever existed. not joking. The majority of these choices will be forgotten in less than 2 years. "Miss Independent" is like fifty times better than "Closer." Will rock ever recover?

And yes, there were a few good 2008 rock albums.. it was a far better year for albums overall, but I just miss the days of killer rock singles. it's depressing.

― billstevejim, Saturday, 7 February 2009 02:35 (fifteen years ago) link
I think rock is at it's most healthiest in Metal these days. If the poll ILX METAL ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2008 RESULTS (NOW COUNTING DOWN THE TOP TEN, BTW) we ran is anything to go by, but I suspect most people wouldn't be the least bit interested in it. Even if Torche are very poppy (and a lot in that poll are considered not proper metal anyway). There's plenty of experimentation involved in other bands in that poll. But then again that can be said of a lot of rock that doesn't get covered by Pitchfork/NME that most people wont hear. I don't believe rock is creatively dead in the underground. In the NME world then I think it's creatively dead if not commercially.

but I just miss the days of killer rock singles. it's depressing.
Maybe there are killer rock songs that get ignored by the media. Wouldn't be a first. Radio is shit nowadays. Playlists are pretty much the same.

why am i always asleep when this gets rolled out?
aside from "Happy House" and "Blind", that is a weird top 5. would've voted for "The Rip" had I remembered it and I like both versions of "Paris" a lot but am really surprised that it placed that high. also no Vampire Weekend woo!
and yay for musically! excellent work.

i guess i hadnt been keeping up on the ne-yo discussion, but i'm still really shocked that "mad" or especially "single" didnt get more love. i <3 everyone who voted for oM, and also "out of reaches" by malkmus and "i lost you" by the walkmen; the latter two i nominated just because they were non-single personal favs and didnt figure anyone else would notice

Once again, I didnt vote.. I'm not expecting anyone here to agree, especially since I'm tired of most 2008 music already.. But my favorite songs of the year were probably these 5.. "Teen Creeps" (No Age), "We're Looking For A Lot Of Love" (Hot Chip), "Soldiers Grin" (Wolf Parade), "Fascination" (Alphabeat), "God And Suicide" (Blitzen Trapper) .. Cut Copy, No Age, and Wolf Parade were the only albums I considered solid.
