ok this part is good & u should understand this: "you might say, then, that fake-techno-as-wave-manque is willing to pass on the fruits of techno's cultural capital for a license to royally fuck shit up, accepting [anticipating] the inevitability of general mockery, accusations of ineptitude and lack of recognition from the lol gatekeepers of techno proper"

Oh, are Nought not still going or is the "timetravelly" in reference to the thread title?

I assumed they would keep on gigging only in London and never releasing anything forever. I prefer to imagine that the one album that does exist doesn't exist as it was such a pale shadow of their live selves, so I guess that was a good decision in a way.

Please get a time machine and see their late 90s trio lineup live, before the first drummer broke his arm and the bassist/double-bassist was replaced by a hardcore dude and the album was sat on for years; must've seen them ten times in two years, counting the ever-growing length of Ignatius, longer longer every gig before the drill came in...

(At that point they were quite tightly intertwined with Camp Blackfoot, who I believe imago is aware of. Suspect there was some bad blood at some point though. I'm not who I was then either. And, sorry to wander in. I'm not really sure what musical essence this thread is a quest for, so it's been on my to-do list to spend a spare hour or two listening to all the youtubes until I work it out, but here I am just babbling away anyway.)

Nought are very much still going, possibly better than ever - saw a fantastic gig just the other week, with Alex Ward (ex Camp Blackfoot) and his new project Dead Days Beyond Help. Timetravelly was the fact that Redrag is from some time ago, as you say. Don't think there was any bad blood as such, and the former Camp Blackfoot core have put together an excellent and vv strange CD of Camp Blackfoot-y new material to be released later this year.

stoked! camp blackfoot album is excellent, yeah. let me know next time there's a gig!

c'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas le beurre (imago), Friday, 8 March 2013 17:15 (eleven years ago) link

right because punk was a response to bloated boring rock and fake techno was a response to really great techno being released all the time

golden age of techno, fake technos just don't get it

ok I very much need to hear this! Glad to hear the other things in your post too.

I have now done approx. half of my homework of listening to the youtubes on this thread and I'm still not entirely sure I know what is and what isn't within its remit but I'm liking the noises. Think I might be liking what I thought "fake techno" meant before listening more than the actual "fake techno" so far but I'm interested to hear more.

For those who are like me and get behind on listening to the stuff posted here, I've put together a youtube playlist, so no need to click through everything.

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfjjJkTR2EM35v07vJ_uLB7FS-kZh10_F

I've included all things linked to on youtube in this thread, except La Lech's Cyclopean video, which doesn't show up for me, and the two Portal tracks, which have been removed.

emil.y, Sunday, 17 March 2013 00:26 (eleven years ago) link

Nice. I have listened to a bunch of things posted here (not all), but having a playlist will make it easier to just put some music on and see what jumps out at me.

this is a v. cool idea, so I've gone ahead and re-upped the P0rt@1 tracks under a slightly different guise (we'll see if this v. crude funny-nose-and-glasses gambit thwarts the sleepless rights managers at PL, or if YouTube p. much already has my DNA mapped and just scans my thoughts through the keyboard at this point).

also, if you could add a Profligate video that was overlooked (thanx!):

love them!! ken camden is all around trustworthy imo. i like his solo stuff as much as implodes, maybe more sometimes? if you like this, see also white/light if you have not already. a+++

new record seems like a leap forward? transformed from umber murk gods to glittering space lords

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 5 April 2013 04:41 (eleven years ago) link

I guess they don't need a narrative, I just really dig the production on this

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 5 April 2013 04:42 (eleven years ago) link

If you're that interested, you should search also: bitchin bajas if you dig an analog space vibe. Woo Chicago!

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Friday, 5 April 2013 04:58 (eleven years ago) link

I will check them out!

listened to some ken camden stuff, sounds like the shimmering production of his solo joint got grafted onto implodes' heretofore dank steez for the new record

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 5 April 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

totally
lotsa good stuff here https://soundcloud.com/bitchin-bajas/

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Friday, 5 April 2013 16:51 (eleven years ago) link

i really liked the one bitchin bajas record that i heard, had quite a strong terry riley vibe to it iirc.

with implodes, i absolutely loved the first album and still play it a lot now. have given the new one a few spins so far and yeah, the sound is good, but aside from a couple of obvious tracks, none of the rest of the songs are really jumping out at me all that much at the moment. will stick with it though.

my new drone crush btw is golden retriever who i've been v slow in getting on board with, but they're a duo from portland who do really beautiful stretched-out analogue synth stuff. got a good soft sunny glow to them, it's like having an s.a.d. lamp in the room with you

Speaking of psych thread, I just linked to the new album from my other favorite TX spacerock band currently working,: Sungod. Has some Floyd parallels, as was noted, but really does a neat melding of ambient and acid rawk.

Love this - Emeralds-esque retro synth party meets an 80s Kip Hanrahan/Fourth World/Terry Riley kinda vibe:
