Beautiful album. Beautiful.

longneck, Friday, 15 March 2013 13:06 (eleven years ago) link

it's kinda annoying that like 60% of his music is now about how everybody is copying his shit
can we go back to when 60% of his music was about how he couldn't get any respect plz

i finally sat through 1977 when he re-released it recently, it was pretty rough

my hopes of this guy doing anything memorable ever again under his own name are down to like 5% at this point guys

Raymond Cummings, Friday, 15 March 2013 13:11 (eleven years ago) link

Love vs Money, How To Be A Lady, and Memoirs were just a delightful confluence of awesomeness and it's time to accept that that was an anomaly

Raymond Cummings, Friday, 15 March 2013 13:13 (eleven years ago) link

Or we could just say that his awesomeness is never going to stop.

longneck, Friday, 15 March 2013 13:29 (eleven years ago) link

awesomeness always stops, though. in like 99% of cases. even the most legendary genius. this is life, it doesn't invalidate their past work.

I was just thinking how incredible it was that this dude helmed LvM, HTABL and Memoirs IN ONE SINGLE YEAR - that's quite some fucking peak.

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 15 March 2013 13:39 (eleven years ago) link

It does stop of course. I'm just semi-amazed at how keen you all seem to be on writing him off completely. We all know he's not dictating trends anymore but this "Terius is trash now" thing you've got going on makes no sense to me. I've loved every album he has released as a solo artist and every album by another artist that he has contributed majorly to, and I expect to love IV Play as well.

longneck, Friday, 15 March 2013 13:53 (eleven years ago) link

how can you expect to love it when you haven't heard it?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 15 March 2013 13:55 (eleven years ago) link

Because that's what expectations are about? Not having experienced something one imagines the experience in advance? Also, the sonic differences between Slow It Down and Tron have me intrigued. And I've liked or loved all the material he has leaked after 1977. Why shouldn't I expect to love it?

longneck, Friday, 15 March 2013 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

otm. This is an important thing to come to terms with. But I'm not ready to write Terius off completely, though. I've dropped any expectations, but he's still capable of making music I want to hear. And whenever he offers echoes of that old magic, it's still a pretty remarkable thing. His 2007-2009 run was so glorious that it's a pleasure just being reminded of it.

Evan R, Friday, 15 March 2013 14:17 (eleven years ago) link

I dunno. One thing is anticipation, the other is expecting to love it.

i will rep for "fuck my brains out", and blame it for making me start this thread of disaster

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 15 March 2013 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

Feel like a lot of you all are posting in absolutes. Artists don't have to be geniuses or trash, they can be inconsistent or somewhere in between.

Evan R, Friday, 15 March 2013 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

I'm also not completely sure that The-Dream's recent misfires are predicative of his future output. A lot of them I can write off as reactions to his tenuous commercial footing. It feels like the guy is still trying to suss out where he stands, so I'm comfortable withholding judgement until he figures out where he wants to go from here

Thank you. This attitude here has been bugging the fuck out of me lately.

Which is why I don't understand longneck's approach. I want the Pistol Annies album to be good but I won't "expect" to love it.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 15 March 2013 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

i don't feel like anyone's posting in absolutes. terius has gone from an imperial phase where he made some of the best music around to becoming more inconsistent to putting out nothing but ideas-void trash for nearly two years. no one's saying "everything he puts out in the future will be terrible", we're observing that his period of greatness has come to an end, as per an almost universal pattern we've witnessed over and over again

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 15 March 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

i mean would people get excited about a new neptunes album now? or would everyone hum and haw and probably mock a lil bit because their time has passed?

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 15 March 2013 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

i'd wait till i heard it and judge it on its merits
tho i'd make assumptions based on my prior experience
(i'm white btw)

the craziest half-court shots and wildest WAGs (forksclovetofu), Friday, 15 March 2013 16:49 (eleven years ago) link

Neptunes is a fair-ish comparison, but I feel like 1. new music from The-Dream is still a rarer, more exciting commodity than new Neptunes music and 2. Neptunes have been off their game way longer than Terius, so there's more precedent for disappointment

Hardly, lol. I just prefer to speak about the music I love.
But I do find it really weird that someone will insist that 1977, Body Work/FMBO, Love Slave, Pieces, Kill the Lights, 1+1 (Terius version), Slow It Down and Tron are "nothing but ideas-void trash" - those are some of my favorite records over the past two years. I mean, we could rate them and I wouldn't give every one of them a perfect ten, but given the opposition I'll risk speaking in absolutes just this once.

longneck, Friday, 15 March 2013 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

there ARE people who still worship everything new the Neptunes/NERD do. that's the real reason OFWGKTA are scary.

some dude, Saturday, 16 March 2013 00:43 (eleven years ago) link

I felt too embarrassed to post this but since this thread is veering towards scientific analysis of whether or not future dream jams will flourish, this song is apparently not on the lp. somebody asked him, he said it's just for soundcloud.

schlump, Saturday, 16 March 2013 00:52 (eleven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

there are some jams on this record but it seemed awfully long, i could hear it opening up but could also hear some tracks landing with a bit of a thud

the beyonce feature is really fantastic tho

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 April 2013 23:27 (eleven years ago) link

he kept talking up jodeci and timbaland and how it's an album heavily influenced by 90s R&B

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 April 2013 23:28 (eleven years ago) link

i told him that there are people out there that really love the electrik red album and he literally sighed and said "the good ole days..."

also said that he wrote 9 of those songs in one day

and that every time he sees solange she talks about that album

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 April 2013 23:31 (eleven years ago) link

also said that he wrote 9 of those songs in one day

fuckkkkkkk that's up there with god creating heaven and earth on the first day of creation

prolego, Thursday, 4 April 2013 23:44 (eleven years ago) link

and solange saw that it was good.

maybe ter/iu/s 2.0 meant the good ole days when he could scoop up pawgs without being challenged to street races all the time

lmao what a bizarre video

still a dope song imo *shrugs*

I hope one of these is 'P Is For Power' because the image of Terius just sitting down with a blank piece of paper and writing the word 'PUSSY' in big letters down the side is just too funny.

What happens with all the songs that were supposed to go on the double though?

longneck, Friday, 5 April 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

i think the album has like 15 songs on it, it's pretty long

J0rdan S., Friday, 5 April 2013 16:27 (eleven years ago) link

I'm usually happy with 12. It was supposed to have 30 though.

longneck, Friday, 5 April 2013 20:13 (eleven years ago) link

pretty glad this album doesn't have 30 songs

schlump, Friday, 5 April 2013 20:42 (eleven years ago) link

tbh i have no real expectations for a new terry album, so i'd actually prefer a longer record where he just dumps out everything he's working on so i can pick and choose my own favorites
