does the mister like them too?x-post
― Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 18:48 (fifteen years ago) link
paavoharju are on spotify and i intend to try them out when i've finished rinsing beyoncé
i intend to go nowhere near the hold steady :/
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 18:51 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, my vote would probably have bumped them up at least three places. The mister does like them but he *chose* not to vote (not sure why, possibly because he only really lurks here, posts even less than I do), whereas I didn't vote because the deadline day was a complete write-off for me.

Okay where have I heard the tinkly opening to that first track on the Paavoharju album before? Is it a sample from a film or TV programme or something?
― Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 18:56 (fifteen years ago) link
I hate myself for not having ordered my ballot and put Paavoharju at the top spot where it belongs.
― Snowballing, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 18:59 (fifteen years ago) link
This is sounding really nice but is it supposed to sound this muddy or is it a poor Spotify stream? Production aside I think you'd like it btw Lex, the second track is sort of... Finnish Kate Bush gone electronic.

(Haha okay maybe not, this probably qualifies under 'pastoral overload'. I like it though)

Another one I need to finish listening to.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:11 (fifteen years ago) link
Okay, I have no idea at all what that is. Looks intriguing though.
― Frank Sumatra (NickB), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:11 (fifteen years ago) link
That's one of the dudes from Studio - keep meaning to check it out.
― Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link
wow i wonder if yearbook 2 is going to show up. i think i voted for that one instead, actually
― all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link
7 trx + intermission is still a fantastic record though
― all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:14 (fifteen years ago) link
i really like the Lissvik but it's fairly unremarkable just v pleasant ambient grooves

What's the Intermission bit all about?
― Frank Sumatra (NickB), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:15 (fifteen years ago) link
especially bcz the album is 9 trx
― Gukbe, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:17 (fifteen years ago) link
on the trax poll, i'd heard most, and was aware of all of the top 50. here, there are at least two artists i'd never heard of before.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:17 (fifteen years ago) link
surely you know of studio though, right?
― all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:18 (fifteen years ago) link
oh yeah, didn't see the post saying it was one of them. which one? not the singer, i hope.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:20 (fifteen years ago) link
no vocals on this one at all actually
― all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:20 (fifteen years ago) link
:D
i shall track it down! it may be my dream studio album
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:22 (fifteen years ago) link
i am liking this poll a lot - so much to check out already
― Robin van Injury (country matters), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:22 (fifteen years ago) link
weird, just realised that solange's album placed but her singles didn't. and beyoncé's singles placed, but tbh i don't expect her album to. that seems oddly...backwards to how it should be.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:24 (fifteen years ago) link
lex you're the only person i can recall that's really ridden hard for the beyonce album
― nascar jesus (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link
kevin too, i think? yeah i know, which seems weird cuz i still can't stop listening to it. i just don't think this is how beyoncé would have planned it.

How about SASHA FIERCE?
― nosotros niggamos (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:27 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah you're probably right - tho i am surprised that "sandcastle disco" didn't place
― nascar jesus (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:27 (fifteen years ago) link
sasha fierce plans nothing. sasha fierce has people plan for her. i don't think she'd be happy either though.
i wonder if paper trail will place. didn't vote for it but it's really grown on me of late.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:28 (fifteen years ago) link
re: Paavoharju
for the people who have no idea what that record is, anyone want to sell it?
I don't know if this helps, but it really reminds me of the Legendary Pink Dots' stranger moments. For me that is an automatic A++, but if that's also unfamiliar I could compare it to a strange, dreamy radio broadcast that keeps changing and doing unpredictable things. Doesn't rock at all, no beats to speak of, but it gets under your skin in this half-awake twilight fashion. Especially after a few listens.
Fonal, their label, has put out some of my favorite stuff this decade.

i dont even know what rap's going to place... jeezy and wayne for sure, but after that i really don't know. i don't think t.i. will, and i dont think ringtone will be able to push a.b.n or something thru. was wale even nominated in this poll?
― nascar jesus (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:30 (fifteen years ago) link
lol who would vote for wale.
am guessing the combined efforts of rev, whiney and myself will not be enough to get nappy roots a showing - the failure of hood headlinaz to place in the trax poll was probably evidence that ringtone crew repping alone is not enough :(
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago) link
Kanye will make it for sure (does that count as rap?). T.I., too.
― I Want to Edit My Profile... (Ioannis), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:33 (fifteen years ago) link
808s isnt rap nah
― nascar jesus (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:33 (fifteen years ago) link
doesn't matter, it's still great.
― I Want to Edit My Profile... (Ioannis), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:34 (fifteen years ago) link
agreed, just saying
― nascar jesus (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:35 (fifteen years ago) link
what's really weird about it is that i hated it at first, loved it soon after, shortchanged it for this poll, and now i'm back to thinking it's one of the year's very best. go figure.

Has anything been decided on the top 10 being announced monday or will there be 15 albums listed thurs and friday?
― Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link
I say we wait until Monday for the top 10.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:54 (fifteen years ago) link
I don't mind either way. Whatever is best for musically.
― Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago) link
yep.
― I Want to Edit My Profile... (Ioannis), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 20:00 (fifteen years ago) link
I think I will just post it on Monday, don't want to rush a day and not give an album its discussion time.
― lil waynes babymama (musically), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 20:00 (fifteen years ago) link
You can just tease people on friday by saying there's shock entries in the top 10 and surprising albums left out and make everyone wait til Monday ;)

Also re: Paavoharju, I think "hippie parents" is about right. The voices sound like they came out of Eastern Europe in the 60's. I agree with sleeve, the Fonal label is great. My favorite recording on the label is byEs ("Kaikkeuden Kauneus"). It's a great late-night album of strange meditative forest-folk.
