From an interview I did with Alice Cooper in 2008:
"I hear, like, 'Teenagers' by My Chemical Romance and I'm pissed off I didn't write that song...You get one like that, and I'm going, boy, if the whole album was like that, this would be a Def Leppard album, or this would be an album that you could play all the way through without taking it off. But I heard that one song and I said, that is great...Every once in awhile you hear one that you just kick yourself for not coming up with yourself."

oh come on
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE ARGUMENT AGAINST THIS.
― fauxmarc, Saturday, 23 March 2013 17:25 (eleven years ago) link
Sudden (way overdue) flash of insight that I muttered about, namely that they were a better New Jersey mainstream rock band than Bon Jovi ever has been. (Mall AOR metal vs. mallpunk, mallpunk wins.)

That's actually a good question! Then again I don't think of DL as mall AOR metal, I think of them as pop gods, so. :-D

Well, OK, gotta fit Monster Magnet in there, too, but notice what all three of those bands have in common - conceptualism, larger-than-lifeism, a commitment to awesomeness (however defined).

In looking over their Wikipedia entry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Chemical_Romance
I'm having a sudden 'where has the time gone' moment realizing that a band specifically formed in response to 9/11 has had an entire mainstream career from start to finish since. Just a year younger than ILX as a whole.
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 March 2013 17:54 (eleven years ago) link
Hm, listening now, Black Parade does seem to hold up a little better as an album than Cheers.

I really liked My Chemical Romance. Sad to see them go. They were one of the ultimate if I had have been 14 or 15 when they came out I would have loved them.
otm I always felt this way about them as well.
Three Cheers is the only album of theirs I own - really fun record. also, "Helena" and "I'm Not OK" are two of my favourite videos of the 00s.
― Roz, Saturday, 23 March 2013 18:20 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, the videos got me interested at first. They had a good sense of humour about the emo pomp.

oh not superhero comics at all, random sci-fi type w/ popish humor type stuff. "the umbrella academy" is out on dark horse comics and i'm struggling to remember the name of the other more recent one that was also great (but i got into late and had to jump around issues of)

Very fond of MCR, not least because they always seemed to have a good sense of their own ridiculousness. "I'm Not Okay" is still a go-to for when I want something loud in the car, and the last album has held up really well. Otoh, I probably have all the MCR I'll ever need, so the timing is probably good.

i kind of don't really know how much a band of their stature can be reasonably expected to earn or hold onto. maybe each member of the band is sitting on a single solitary million right now, kinda doubt it's much more than that, though.

He said son when you grow upWill you be the buyer of the vinylA gatefold in your hand
He said will you order themThese records, from all the eBay sellersThe money they have made
Because one day I'll join youIn the line to own it in the summerI love The Black Parade

If you hear one note of the intro, it could either be "The Black Parade", or "Children" Robert Miles.
Two notes confirms which one it is.

none of their albums were perfect but: the sheer volume of ideas in each one! they were accused at the time of (and i even thought of them as) being another indistinguishable mass of mall emo but: no one sounded like them, especially by three cheers, that hybridized glam/arena rock/hardcore thing was theirs, and they made three very different albums that somehow found a new way to explore that dynamic every time. (and they also shelved a pretty decent one!) sidenote the jump in quality from the debut to three cheers, the feeling that their music had been sharpened down into this perfectly-edged thing, is so fun to experience
