Maybe they're stuck in SST limbo, like everyone else who was on the label.

I could even see Thinking Of Empire sitting quite nicely alongside a lot of the stuff LTM has reissued, always thought there was heavy whiff of Manchester post-punk on that album.
Have seen quite a few live videos of this lot now, but have found them all a bit disappointing tbh. Maybe it's just the murky quality of the recordings but on stage they seemed to do quite a good job of completely suppressing their tunes.

Actually I take that back - this live set from 1987 is great:

Needs saying what a fine drummer Holzman is, could listen to e.g. Distended all day long for his part, my ears are just fascinated by that stuff. Talk about well-oiled gears.

It's like the older their music gets, the more timeless it becomes. I literally can't get enough of this band.

why Drag City or some label like that never leapt at this opportunity is beyond me...
I just bought After the Original Style and Thinking of Empire after only having them digitally for many years from the same seller on Discogs and they arrived in a package postmarked from, you guessed it, Drag City.

Big connection between drag city and the slovs is that Tom Watson plays on some of those later red krayola records that dc put out

I've never ventured into Red Krayola. Is it worthwhile for a Slovenly guy like myself?

Not fully investigated them tbh but i didn't really enjoy the couple I heard at all

to take it back to Slovenly, this song rules the wasteland:

that final "I'm NOT LOOOOONNNNNNEE-LEEEEEEE" part = shivers
Yeah, I think as far as capturing an isolated mood that's equal parts doom and somehow hopeful, they were kings. It's like a melancholy happiness. Such a unique feeling that they were able to capture.

is this the same steve anderson? this obit seems to paint the picture of him as an austin scene dude, but weren't the slovs mainly bay area / west coast dudes?
this is steve from slovenly sitting atop the ladder: https://img.discogs.com/v8LovkNFJgTyQrK-dIDhP7kbFWI=/600x423/smart/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/A-315042-1497127252-7384.jpeg.jpg

Doesn’t look like the same guy so i’m pretty sure that’s a different Steve Anderson. From discogs it seems like there were two different punk bands called toxic shock in the early 80s, one with some slovenly guys (Watson, ziegler and anderson) and another from Austin that had David Yow on bass and the other Steve Anderson on guitar.

Having been introduced to Slovenly in the late 80s, I've been revisiting them a lot during lockdown. What a band! I'd love a Numero group style boxset. Does anyone know why on the CDs of 'Riposte' and 'We Shoot...' the running order is different to the vinyl with the A and B sides swapped? Just curious.
