I think they're being savvy about building up hype enough to ensure big first week sales.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 13 April 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

They sort of feel like the biggest band in the world right now. I know they aren't, but maybe they should be.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 13 April 2013 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

when I heard the bit of this lucky song on the advert a while ago with the vocoder bit I thought he was singing funky and now it becomes clear he's singing lucky and I am not buying this record

conrad, Saturday, 13 April 2013 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

the snippet of the video with pharrell and nile is refreshingly atypical of 2013 music video look/feel

also no anime thank god (worse thing they ever did, 100x worse than tron)

Nile listening to the track on hps is pretty genius. The whole campaign seems scripted like clockwork. Can't wait to see how it progresses from now on

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 13 April 2013 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

there is something about the unexpected shot of pharrell, centre-stage, smiling, that reminds me of the crash zoom into leonardo dicaprio's face in the django unchanged trailer. it works out really well though. he flexes into the shape of disco vocalist very smoothly.

schlump, Saturday, 13 April 2013 17:30 (eleven years ago) link

so the album cut of this is gonna be 6 minutes long; I can dig it.

8- Nile Rodgers (Guitar), Pharrell Williams (Vocals) - 6:07

up all night to get bitcoins (crüt), Saturday, 13 April 2013 17:42 (eleven years ago) link

is the vocoder being modulated by Pharrell's voice *and* Nile's guitar?

what is this i'm feeling
if you want, believe i'm ready (?)
ahhh-ahhh
we've come too far
to give up who we are
so dance, raise the bar (?)
and our cups
to the stars
she's up all night till the sun
i'm up all night to get some
she's up all night for good fun
i'm up all night to get lucky
we're up all night till the sun
we're up all night to get some
we're up all night for good fun
we're up all night to get lucky
we're up all night to get lucky
we're up all night to get lucky
we're up all night to get lucky
we're up all night to get lucky

The way he sings the "we've come too far" bit is amazing.

The album's move away from computerized sounds reflects Daft Punk's "ambivalence" about the EDM craze they helped to inspire.

nice clip, this will be good. for those in a daft punk mood who don't know, there is a movie on the pirate bay https://thepiratebay.se/torrent/8346219/Daft_Punk_-_Alive_2007_by_Jarodc
"Live concert of Daft Punk at Bercy for the tour Alive 2007"
it is entirely made of clips filmed by the crowd's handheld devices. it sounds good, looks a bit worse than the concept on paper but i liked it. one great bit: at one point, part of the crowd were making pyramid signs with both hands in the air.

Sébastien, Saturday, 13 April 2013 19:22 (eleven years ago) link

They sort of feel like the biggest band in the world right now. I know they aren't, but maybe they should be.

Everything's lined up almost too perfectly... This could very well be the case within a few months.

billstevejim, Saturday, 13 April 2013 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

FWIW. I mean, for all I know Skrillex is the biggest band in the world, but I don't know what the even means anymore. I guess it can be gauged by how many people it can attract to a live show?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 13 April 2013 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

I think the hype is hilarious but in all seriousness I hope for the best and they'll obv make a better "current biggest band" than Mumford and sons.

i hope they really go with the poor carl carlton approximation thing tbh

The description of my page is: Gargoyles Swimsuit Special (Matt P), Saturday, 13 April 2013 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

i think the second line pharrell sings isn't "if you want, believe i'm ready" but "IF YOU WANNA LEAVE, I'M WIT' IT"

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Saturday, 13 April 2013 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

On the real tho, turning the practice of staying out all night in the hopes of getting laid on its ear and making it sound elegant instead of desperate it a pretty spectacular achievement.

i kind of hope this is the video for the song, just skateboard p, nile, and the robots jamming in the black

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Saturday, 13 April 2013 20:18 (eleven years ago) link

black and gold is agl.

The description of my page is: Gargoyles Swimsuit Special (Matt P), Saturday, 13 April 2013 20:21 (eleven years ago) link

i think this could still fall a little flat, like there's a risk of it being a retro pastiche and the parts not really adding up or making sense, those lyrics have me a little worried and i'm not that impressed w/ pharrell's vocal. but then the chorus has a lovely melody and nile jamming is still just the best thing in the world. i'll definitely enjoy this fwiw.

xxpost -- Glad I wasn't the only one thinking that.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 April 2013 20:33 (eleven years ago) link

care to explain?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 13 April 2013 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

They've never used a female vocalist have they? I know a lot of their vocals are fairly androgynous but it's still a bit weird

Number None, Saturday, 13 April 2013 20:38 (eleven years ago) link

i like julian casablancas' voice, i don't think it's a troll as much as it feels a little focus grouped to me, like let's do a real album with all these real musicians, gotta include the strokes guy and the animal collective guy. hmm idk. anyway, i hope they gave todd edwards carte blanche.

It is kinda weird!

"High Life" seems specifically female, but yeah, I'd never thought about their general lack of female vocals before.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 13 April 2013 21:01 (eleven years ago) link

well how many guest vocalists did they have before this album?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 13 April 2013 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

just Romanthony and Todd Edwards

sandra dayo connor (The Reverend), Saturday, 13 April 2013 21:24 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, that objectification of male sexuality in French electronic music has always been interesting to me (it's pretty much the vibe to all French house/disco, but also Air's "Sexy Boy", Talkie Walkie... and I suppose the sensibility includes a lot of continental house/disco/techno guys as well... tho nobody does it like the French). def a vibe that would code differently for mainstream America
