My little bro is really into metal and he played me this guy's record and it was fucking great.

DL, that is a great review. Can I just say you are truly an amazing writer?
Will dip my toe in the new album this weekend.

Does anyone know whether this will be released on regular vinyl rather than $31 colored vinyl?
― blatherskite, Friday, 19 April 2013 23:42 (eleven years ago) link
the vinyl sold out before i knew about it but a regular vinyl version is coming

xp Witch is still badass, but I now like Uncle Acid better.
― billstevejim, Saturday, 20 April 2013 16:00 (eleven years ago) link
witch IS still badass, and i'm not sure which i prefer. that first witch album is a highpoint of the decade for me.

remind me again why do pitchfork ignore this band?!
― nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:00 (eleven years ago) link
lol, pitchfork hates this sort of thing
― wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:09 (eleven years ago) link
British?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:09 (eleven years ago) link
i don't think there's another example of this kind of ignorance of succesful "indie" band
― nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:12 (eleven years ago) link
nah, they give music like this sevens and below if they bother to review it
― wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:12 (eleven years ago) link
I get the feeling that "british" is the whole reason this band is so hyped, right?
― wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:14 (eleven years ago) link
NME, Kerrang etc haven't covered them at all. No hype from them whatsoever.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:25 (eleven years ago) link
"you want us to cover you? send us a copy of this esoteric label, dammit! we are spoiled"
― nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:31 (eleven years ago) link
NME did cover Mind Control though:

― nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:33 (eleven years ago) link
well I dunno, I don't follow that stuff. I just mean here on ilm. I don't get why there's so much hype here about this band compared to other similar bands, other than the fact that this one is british. I can't keep track of who is from where though so that perception might be off.
― wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:38 (eleven years ago) link
i'm an american, and afaic, provenance isn't an issue. i don't ride harder for high on fire just cuz they're american. and uncle acid have a p distinctive angle on their genre.
― I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:41 (eleven years ago) link
yeah, the distinctive angle is the thing, not the british. i'm not british.
― nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:44 (eleven years ago) link
I guess I don't hear that. what's the distinctive angle?
― wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:55 (eleven years ago) link
non generic doom metal (unique vocals and dirtier, "proto punk"/garage sound)
― nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:57 (eleven years ago) link
hmm, I guess I don't hear that any more so than bands like witch, danava, or graveyard.
― wk, Saturday, 20 April 2013 18:05 (eleven years ago) link
Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats = NirvanaGraveyard = SoundgardenDanava = Screaming TreesWitch = Oasis
― how's life, Saturday, 20 April 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago) link
lol. oasis/nirvana seem backwards though.

VOL 1 is their best album guys.admit it.
― nostormo, Monday, 22 April 2013 19:26 (eleven years ago) link
here's one reason why:

― nostormo, Monday, 22 April 2013 19:28 (eleven years ago) link
the "distinctive angle" in this record, is the main reason why.

one thing about 'mind control', it seems to come from somewhere more… distant than 'blood lust'
― j., Thursday, 28 November 2013 20:21 (ten years ago) link
subliminal seduction operating at greater range than your ritual knife
― CANONICAL artists, etc., etc. (contenderizer), Thursday, 28 November 2013 20:29 (ten years ago) link
Definitely darker and doomier than the 2nd album. Takes longer to sink in. Prefer it to the new Ghost album.
― pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 28 November 2013 20:31 (ten years ago) link
picked up 'mind control' today.
4 listens in .. and its beginning to click ..
dont hear too much of a difference with 'blood lust' other than the songs are not quite as immediate.
still, i love their lo-fi sludge heavy sound and i know a few more listens and i will succumb.
xpost : re ghost - oooh .. i love the latest ghost album. ok, it sags a little in the middle, but damn, the final few songs just take the whole thing to another level of enjoyment.
― mark e, Thursday, 28 November 2013 20:35 (ten years ago) link
and yesterday i picked up sunn 0))) m&d for a £1 !! so, was actually going to ask the ilm crew (hello kerr - was going to drop on your fb wall) where next given i love earth mk2, sunn 0))), uncle acid, and ghost.i need guidance.the key factor is lot of guitars, lack of screamy/gutteral coffin disturbing vocals.suspect there is a whole world of metal based noise i would enjoy if only i had the knowledge.for example : mastodon.keep looking at their releases ..
― mark e, Thursday, 28 November 2013 20:39 (ten years ago) link
I love Mind Control to bits. It's very brooding, for sure. And I came around to Blood Lust in a big way, it took about a year since its original release for it to really click with me.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 28 November 2013 20:45 (ten years ago) link
but damn, the final few songs just take the whole thing to another level of enjoyment.
this is key, though i think it keeps ramping up all the way through. slow to start, solid in the middle, brilliant back half. "ghuleh" -- "monstrance clock" is where the album's at.
― CANONICAL artists, etc., etc. (contenderizer), Thursday, 28 November 2013 21:48 (ten years ago) link
phew.
thought i was alone.
whenever i play this album i always sag and feel on the verge of giving up, and then get the massive payback later on ..
"ghuleh" -- "monstrance clock" is where the album's at.
absolutely .. not heard anything ever as impressive and wonderful as these ..
guess we should x-fer this love over to the ghost thread ?
― mark e, Thursday, 28 November 2013 21:56 (ten years ago) link
Mind Control really is great. It definitely was nowhere near as immediate as Blood Lust but once it sinks in its definitely as good.
