What the flip is "Silver Springs?"

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 8 June 2007 08:36 (sixteen years ago) link

My question exactly, it is not on my vinyl (sorry, my mam's vinyl) copy of this. Is it the same as that Buckingham Nicks song?

I know, right?, Friday, 8 June 2007 10:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Go Your Own Way - easy.

SeekAltRoute, Friday, 8 June 2007 11:06 (sixteen years ago) link

from wikipedia:
The track "Silver Springs" was released as a B-side to "Don't Stop" and "Go Your Own Way". The song, originally intended for release on the LP, was not included because of its length. The shorter Nicks song "I Don't Want to Know" was its replacement. The standard version of Rumours now includes "Silver Springs"

van smack, Friday, 8 June 2007 12:20 (sixteen years ago) link

and nicks was pissed at the band for both removing "silver springs' and adding "i don't want to know."

Lindsay's "Bow bow bow bow bow" vocal on "Secondhand News" is the best thing ever.

I might ultimately plump for "You Make Loving Fun" but it's so hard with this album.

"The Chain" and not just because of...

Standard, my ass. Was it ever on any vinyl version, the, um, standard for eons?

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 9 June 2007 02:46 (sixteen years ago) link

who cares? the song rules and got my vote

electricsound, Saturday, 9 June 2007 02:48 (sixteen years ago) link

and nicks was pissed at the band for both removing "silver springs' and adding "i don't want to know."

she was right about "silver springs," wrong about "i don't want to know," which i voted for. i don't actually know if it's my favorite on the album -- i tend to think almost every one is my favorite when i hear them -- but i love the way it buoys up the more contemplative back end. it's sort of a reprise of the spirit of the opening tracks, and i like how stevie and lindsey sing in tandem all the way through it.

what i remember about this album is being 7 years old and my parents and all of their friends playing it all summer. iconic moment for me is being crowded in the back of my dad's friend tom's green vw rabbit, riding down dirt roads to the pond we always went swimming in, wearing nothing but swimming trunks and towels, with the windows down and rumors on the tapedeck.

I kinda love how "I Don't Want to Know" is almost never cited as part of her pantheon; it's the kind of song you only notice after years of living with the album anyway ("When you tell me then I'm crazy/That's nothing that I didn't know").

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 9 June 2007 03:08 (sixteen years ago) link

could be because it's the most lindsey-sounding of her songs (which could also be why she maybe didn't like it). but the lyrics are pure stevie.

Standard, my ass. Was it ever on any vinyl version, the, um, standard for eons?

Nor is it on the iTunes version of Rumours, the standard version right now. What the hell are they talking about?

My vote's for Gold Dust Woman.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 9 June 2007 05:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Like, with Gold Dust, you can feel yourself waking up on the carpet and the bowl's cashed and you can't find your old lady and the party's fuckin' OVER, man...

To speak of it in the vernacular.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 9 June 2007 06:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

There's still time to vote for "Silver Springs" folks!

van smack, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I go for Dreams. Because when drunk with friends it always gets played and it makes everyone v happy.

The Chain, partly because it's the only thing I can play on a guitar.

river wolf, Friday, 15 June 2007 04:24 (sixteen years ago) link

"GYOW" but mostly cos that scene with it in Casino when there's that sweeping shot of the desert and they're driving made me realise how great FM were. Too hard to pick properly, nearly anything on this is a sentimental fav and musically it's so good

President Evil, Friday, 15 June 2007 06:20 (sixteen years ago) link

hey, did anyone notice how the writing on the back of the lp is in comic sans?

Damn, only six votes.

van smack, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:19 (sixteen years ago) link

for some reason, this is a total surprise, but..

Of course, odds are on "The Chain", "Go Your Own Way", or "Dreams" for scooping up the win...

...mentioning odds-on favorites in the original post should be outlawed!!

i love every song on this record, but surprised to see the chain so high and don't stop so low. have the clintons ruined it for everyone?

electricsound, Saturday, 16 June 2007 01:49 (sixteen years ago) link

the chain does deserve props for being one of mick'n'john's few songwriting credits and keeping them in blow and headscarves for another day

kenan, Saturday, 16 June 2007 02:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I feel sorry for "Oh Daddy", which I think is a great track, so doomy!

That said if I was honest I'd admit that it wasn't anywhere near my favourite song on the album.

This is the problem with these Fleetwood Mac polls. They're kind of guilt inducing!

Tim F, Saturday, 16 June 2007 03:45 (sixteen years ago) link

eleven years pass...

I've listened to quite a few episodes of the Song Exploder podcast, and this episode where Lindsay Buckingham breaks down "Go Your Own Way" is easily the most interesting one I've heard:
http://songexploder.net/fleetwood-mac

He plays the demo version, isolates each singer on backing vocals, talks about how he couldn't get over Stevie, and overall sounds like much less of an egomaniac than I had assumed he was.

Tested bass amp at band practice tonight with iconic breakdown riff from “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac.

i had a hazy memory of this album being polled and "you make loving fun" winning. it's my pick, anyway. but i kinda dug the world in my head where that had quietly become the consensus favorite among us ILM types.

You're not wrong, "You Make Loving Fun" finished second in the other poll: How can it be that we have never polled RUMOURS by Fleetwood Mac?!

maximum waste and minimum joy (oder doch?), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 14:05 (five years ago) link

Toss up between several songs for me (obviously), but really surprised to see GYOW winning it. One of the least interesting songs on the album IMO

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 13 December 2018 14:19 (five years ago) link

"Dreams" and "You Make Loving fun" are the only songs I really like on this album.
(I also like "Silver Springs" but it's not on the original album)
I'm much more of a Tusk person !

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 13 December 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link

That I enjoy this whole record goes without saying, yet 'You Make Loving Fun' is still my favourite track on this album by miles.

only reason one should revive and complain about "dreams" on this thread is because didn't win imho

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Saturday, 10 October 2020 03:57 (three years ago) link

am i wrong in remembering a moment in one of those 60 minute classic albums programs where lindsey plays the backing tracks to "gold dust woman"? i remember being really charmed at the bit of wickedness placed into the song and it helped revive my interest in that era of the band years back.

Afaik “Landslide” was a song on the previos self titled album not a b-side?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:40 (three years ago) link

It is...not sure why I thought it--did it ever turn up as a B-side?

clemenza, Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:41 (three years ago) link

I believe “silver spring” was a bside that was inserted into Rumours when the CD came out?

brimstead, Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:55 (three years ago) link

That's it then, I'm getting the two mixed up. It was "Silver Springs" I discovered years later.

clemenza, Saturday, 10 October 2020 21:03 (three years ago) link

Silver Springs was left off the album because the overall length (at that time) would have meant sacrificing the bass response by narrowing the grooves.

Of course on CD that doesn't matter so it was restored.

nonsensei (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 10 October 2020 21:11 (three years ago) link

i love "dreams" and i think it's cool that it's becoming a hit for the second time

dyl, Saturday, 10 October 2020 22:28 (three years ago) link

If we count covers and remixes this is actually like the fifth time “dreams” is a hit.
