xp but still, movement is hanging somewhere in between the super goth late joy division and the new mega dance act new order. it's a different animal.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

Well, yeah: Bernard Sumner wrote'em. He and the other two wrote the Joy Division music, so it'd make sense that Movement would sound like more of the same.

But you were "surprised at how well they replicated the sound [of Joy Division on Movement...]?" ;)

btw can I just say that if you don't have "1963" in your top five, you're doing it wrong

Well yes, it's a transitional album (most albums between a first album and a last album are), but I wouldn't say it was a different animal. That implies something radically different, and it's pretty clear from listening to the record who was involved in making it.

xp state of the nation? another pointless exercise in programming. unrecyclable rubbish if you ask me.

1963 is phantastic and that is a great praise by someone who was born in [guess year]

Hehehehehe... oh indeed, I'm totally doing it wrong! But, since we scarcely see eye-to-eye on the repertoire of bands that we both like and everything...

haha, I would hi-five you but the matter/antimatter reaction would likely annihilate the world

if you can't imagine preferring 5 songs on substance alone to 1963, i assume what you're doing is PLAYING YOURSELF and I don't want to do that anyway

well, yeah! Sumner's singing doomy platitudes because Curtis no longer can't.

hahahaha I should have done that, but no

oh sure new order was always great, but it wasn't until the early 00s that they truly rocked the shack

da croupier, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

whatever. As long as "All The Way" is on every ballot.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

"All The Way" is the weakest song on Technique by lots and lots, though

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

no that would be "Guilty Partner" -- terrible chorus.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:36 (eleven years ago) link

"Turn My Way" is great! And I might put "Rock the Shack" onto my ballot just for kicks.

The way I see it everyone gets to have at least one or two "dumb" songs on their ballot without getting flamed by the rest of the board, i.e. POO Rock the Shack, Every Little Counts, etc.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:37 (eleven years ago) link

otm ... by far

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:37 (eleven years ago) link

xp no, that would be love less, run or mr disco. technique is so overrated. it has a shitty title, a horrible cover and lots of inferior songs. only all the way and dream attack save it from being one of the weakest no album.

literasites!

Barney's lyrics are in such a strange space of their own. Good and bad fail me.

nothing special those two, new order on auto-pilot. i am sure there are lots of people who like that kind of stuff, i don't though. the end of my shack is the end of my world.

i'm not going to lecture you with poetry

woof, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:49 (eleven years ago) link

Both 'All The Way' and 'Guilty Partner' made it onto my ballot. I'm not going to give away any more of my ballot spoilers though... bring on the results! :D

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

dunno how "New Order on auto pilot" can ever be terrible when the alternative is "New Order and no pilot."

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:52 (eleven years ago) link

OK, I ranked the bottom 25 songs on my ballot now I somehow need to rank the top 15 ... damn you New Order and all your great songs I couldn't stop listening to all throughout high school.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

"Guilty Partner" rules, especially the chorus

I vehemently disagree about "Age of Consent" not being separable from its arrangement

xpost. I would be interested to see if anyone has covered it with a different arrangement

Lies! Technique is one of the five best albums ever released. What about Vanishing Point? Round & Round? Fine Time is probably my least favourite song on there just because it doesn't really fit with the other songs that well, on it's own it's still a 9/10 though.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:06 (eleven years ago) link

been really enjoying Brutal lately, think I was expecting too much when it came out oh shit it cannot be 13 years ago

woof, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:16 (eleven years ago) link

in the pre-Napster days I bought The Beach soundtrack just to own "Brutal."

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:17 (eleven years ago) link

Forgot all about that song, I have it on the Retro box set but that really doesn't get a lot of plays. They should have put it on Get Ready really, if only there was a song on there they could have easily got rid of..

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:21 (eleven years ago) link

'Age Of Consent' is what, two chords, a vocal melody and a keyboard hook? There's a lot you could do with those three elements.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:21 (eleven years ago) link

I would rather rock the shack than show off my love technique.

Euler, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:22 (eleven years ago) link

La Lechera mentioned above that she couldn't locate the ballad in 'Age Of Consent'... on a similar tack, I'm struggling to locate the logic and reasoning in much of what alex in mainhattan is posting here :/

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

Fwiw, Technique is hands down my favourite New Order album... to me it's their absolute peak and their best beginning-to-end full length. Stacks up very well against any "classic album" you could possibly name, too, in my very humble opinion.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

"Fine Time" is awesome and they should have made an entire album of songs like that.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

I think 'Fine Time' is a brilliant opening statement, tbh... maybe if it was placed in the middle of the album it would stick out like a sore thumb, but because it's at the beginning its not as noticeable, I think.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:36 (eleven years ago) link

was Technique always loved? Depends where you're from. When I discovered New Order in '91 it was immediately my favorite album, the likes of Rolling Stone championed Low Life, a consensus that stood for years. Meanwhile reading English mags in the early nineties the album was already canonized.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:39 (eleven years ago) link

Technique and Low-Life both appeared in NME's best albums of all time list in 93. A few years later Melody Maker did an albums list that placed both those albums in similar positions. I always thought these were their two most popular albums but these days it feels like Power, Corruption & Lies has edged out Low-Life.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:08 (eleven years ago) link

really? to me pcl together with brotherhood always seemed the weakest of all of their albums.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:11 (eleven years ago) link

I always thought Brotherhood was seen as the weakest of their 80's albums, PCL has always had a big following I thought?
