I always thought Brotherhood was seen as the weakest of their 80's albums, PCL has always had a big following I thought?

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:14 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not as fond of Brotherhood as I am some of their other albums... but hang on, it has 'Bizarre Love Triangle' on it! And this gorgeous slab of beauty which of course I'm not suggesting anyone vote for*

*(this may be a fib)

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:17 (eleven years ago) link

Was it decided whether "Substance" counts as an album for the albums voting?

― NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:58

I voted for it.

kraudive, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:19 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, I'm still getting my ballot in order, but that song ('All Day Long') was an automatic inclusion.

Austin, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:20 (eleven years ago) link

I really can't hear the usual charm in a lot of the Brotherhood tracks. It leaves me a little cold.

kraudive, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:21 (eleven years ago) link

*not All Day Long or BLT.

kraudive, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:22 (eleven years ago) link

Technique was always pretty much adored since day one iirc. NME had a rave, MM had that infamous Chris Roberts review
(http://internettr✧✧✧.com/users/aldgate_e✧✧✧@utopi✧✧✧.d✧/techn.html) even Smash Hits gave it 9/10.

it went to number 1 in the UK, also it had an amazing TV advert

Substance is not an album. Singles is not an album. The Best of is not an album. 81/82 EP is the best single disc they've every released but it's not an album.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:30 (eleven years ago) link

I love the sound of Brotherhood, what Andrew Harrison in a '93 Select reassessment called "the bass of Hook, hungover" over something.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:35 (eleven years ago) link

Brotherhood is a good album but Low-Life and Technique are so perfect, it just doesn't compare. Along with Bizarre Love Triangle and All Day Long, Paradise is my other favourite on there. I do have a soft spot for Every Second Counts, more for the comedy value though.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:41 (eleven years ago) link

I obviously mean Every Little Counts.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

Substance is the first New Order album I fell in love with. That is why I voted for it.

kraudive, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

Notable comps have always counted on these polls. If enough people vote for it, it counts.

kraudive, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:43 (eleven years ago) link

Brotherhood really does work best on vinyl. The sides are sequenced well and the CDs all sound extra harsh to me. I've grown to love Brotherhood over the years but it still only placed 4th on my list.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:46 (eleven years ago) link

I voted for ten albums Substance and then the eight studio albums plus Lost Sirens (spoiler alert that was not at the higher end of my list) I just figured Bee could decide what was allowed to be included.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:52 (eleven years ago) link

My New Order ballot will probably look like my Fall ballot: Little to nothing released after 1990. They just lost me after Technique. I tried to listen to Get Ready while working on my ballot and nothing is really sticking. Are there any standout tracks on the last three or so albums?

righteousmaelstrom, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:53 (eleven years ago) link

Turn, Waiting for the Sirens Call, Primitive Notion, Vicious Streak, Someone Like You, Morning Night and Day, Here To Stay

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:55 (eleven years ago) link

Yes! "Crystal," "Run Wild," "Morning Night and Day," "Waiting For the Siren's Call," "Krafty," "Someone Like You."

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:55 (eleven years ago) link

It's not on an album but "Here to Stay" is gorgeous.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:57 (eleven years ago) link

These guys have covered the last two albums, maybe I'd add Hey Now What You Doing. I love Run Wild, Vicious Streak and Waiting For The Siren's Call. Republic has Regret, World, Ruined in a Day, Everyone Everywhere and Special.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

I liked Regret and it will likely make the ballot. I'll need to check out the other ones though. I might have heard them before but didn't want to wade through a lot of dross to get to the good stuff.

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 00:04 (eleven years ago) link

xp yeah Here To Stay is their only decent song post-Republic aside from Crystal IMO.

piscesx, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 00:10 (eleven years ago) link

was /Technique/ always loved?

I can't say what techno pop crap I thought Fine Time (ergo, this record and New Order) was at the time.

That says more about my tastes when I was 16 than Technique however -- which is sort of indisputably my favorite New Order record now.

I simply did not get New Order then.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 00:38 (eleven years ago) link

While I had heard Substance before, Technique was the first NO album I owned (after watching the video for Fine Time on 120 Minutes several times and was finally won over) and I was a huge Joy Division fan at the time!

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 00:45 (eleven years ago) link

new order have so many great tunes but age of consent isn't one of them. that song goes absolutely nowhere.

Wow, I feel sorry for you. That song takes me everywhere... A perfect blend of all of the elements that makes New Order a great band. Top 5 for sure.

another pointless exercise in programming

Programming takes actual talent - you don't just press a button and a machine spits out a song. Considering Stephen Morris wanted to sound like a drum machine, I'm not sure what it is exactly you get out of a band like New Order. Rockist nonsense.

oh dammit, I somehow managed to leave "Lonesome Tonight" off of my ballot

This should automatically invalidate anyone's ballot.

And fwiw: I don't, and never have, seen Joy Division and New Order as two different things. I think if you ignore the differences in singer/lyricist and play the Joy Division catalogue in order, followed by the New Order catalogue, there is a definite natural progression there.

OTM.

Kent Burt, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:11 (eleven years ago) link

I thought Technique was their weakest album until I heard Republic. It's still not my favourite, but I like it more now. I really love "Love Less" and "All The Way" so some of the nasty talk above is not cool.

"Here To Stay" makes me think of how great New Order could be again with a production team with the group's best interest at heart. More work with the Chemical Brothers would be nice - or James Murphy.

Kent Burt, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:15 (eleven years ago) link

Face Up must be a celebrated favorite, right? The lyrics are pretty lame but the music/melody are tops.

Woo!

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:17 (eleven years ago) link

Yep. Especially the intor.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:21 (eleven years ago) link

Love Face Up as well and Age of Consent should be way up there.

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:26 (eleven years ago) link

All of the talk about All The Way has me optimistic for that one as well.

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:28 (eleven years ago) link

Was it decided whether "Substance" counts as an album for the albums voting?

yes i'm including. however people vote i will include. i even have a BBC Concert in there.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:31 (eleven years ago) link

btw, if you messed up on your ballot (looking at you DJP) you can resubmit your ballot.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:32 (eleven years ago) link

also if you looked into say video later and want to add to your ballot i can do that as well.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:34 (eleven years ago) link

videos

Bee OK, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:34 (eleven years ago) link

I am watching the collected videos DVD and forgot how amazing they are!

The video for "World (The Price of Love)" makes me like the song 1000x more and imagine a CSI: New Order that never was.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 02:09 (eleven years ago) link

"Ruined in a day" the video is one of those "Oh, I wasn't listening to the song really" videos.

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 09:32 (eleven years ago) link

Not enough love here for the amazing guitar and synth orchestrations of "In a Lonely Place."

up to 17, this is so very cool.

Bee OK, Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:15 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah that Perfect Kiss video is one of the greatest things ever. Love watching how awkward they all look making this incredible music.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 23 May 2013 02:36 (eleven years ago) link

Ballot sent.

Very happy with my votes.

Austin, Thursday, 23 May 2013 03:15 (eleven years ago) link

Further listening has cemented my belief that Republic is far better than Technique, although Fine Time is as great as ever.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 23 May 2013 03:56 (eleven years ago) link

Now THAT is funny.

Austin, Thursday, 23 May 2013 04:12 (eleven years ago) link

You don't like Fine Time?

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 23 May 2013 04:31 (eleven years ago) link

I only really like the singles on Republic

there should be a "which is your favorite NO song to dance to" poll option (or top 3, if we're being serious)

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:32 (eleven years ago) link

I have a friend in his early 50s who for a few decades now has had a rule that he will not start dancing until someone plays "Blue Monday."
