It just occured to me that I hadn't even heard "Rockin' That Shit" so I am listening to it for the first time now. Sounds dope.

I would much rather listen to hard bop jazz and stfu (The Reverend), Sunday, 15 February 2009 09:05 (fifteen years ago) link

BTW I have belatedly become obsessed with Electrik Red's "So Good". It really is!

tim have you heard "we fuck you"

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 15 February 2009 09:14 (fifteen years ago) link

is the whole album floating out there or just a couple tracks?

Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 15 February 2009 09:35 (fifteen years ago) link

just a few afaik... they might've even had an ep but all i've been able to find are "we fuck you" and "drink in my cup" and then more recently "so good"

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 15 February 2009 09:39 (fifteen years ago) link

def jam website says the album came out last year, doesn't seem to be actually true though.

def jam website has shit all screwed up iirc - amazon says march 24 for electrik red

re "we fuck you":

Yes, though for the first time earlier today (following up on "So Good" love). I'm impressed by the alien synth-bass burbles but I don't know if the song itself works. I like the idea of it I guess. Need to listen more.

Tim F, Sunday, 15 February 2009 10:34 (fifteen years ago) link

really love the singer's voice

Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 15 February 2009 10:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Isn't it four of them? Or is it a Pussycat Dolls style solo + back-up arrangement?

Tim F, Sunday, 15 February 2009 10:48 (fifteen years ago) link

No actually you're right, I'm thinking of the singer on Freaky Freaky/So Good, they definitely seem to hand it around a lot more than PCD

Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 15 February 2009 10:51 (fifteen years ago) link

i never understand how ppl thought 'i luv your girl' could be a standout -- its the most generic-y / boring joint on the album

wow @ the energy you guys can expend talking about this guy. i actually kinda like the album now but serious: do any of you have any reservations about his singing, or disliked his voice at first before getting used to it? because i don't think i'll ever completely enjoy his music for that reason.

id argue it definitely took awhile for this dude to get the acclaim he deserved al! a lot of this is pretty belated

LOOK WHAT I BRING TO THE TABLA (deej), Sunday, 15 February 2009 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

oh i know the album was a total sleeper hit that accrued buzz over a pretty long period of time...but i thought that was more of a gradual word-of-mouth thing, not people all hearing it when it was released and having to slowly get used to the squeak-toy vocals.

havent we all moved on to ryan leslie now anyway

only reservation is im not sure this is gonna make folks feel better who agreed w/ tim's criticism about 'rockin that shit' -- i just hope there are some subtle & more intricately written ballads like 'purple kisses' & 'luv songs' on the lp

man this is earnest as shit -- i guess hes decided to step up in the wake of chrisbrowngate

this song is so serious

This sounds like that O'Neal McKnight song. Dope tho.

The Reverend, Saturday, 21 February 2009 04:39 (fifteen years ago) link

By "tim's criticism" do you mean that it's more universal/generic than his first album stuff, Deej?

I should note that this doesn't at all bother me w/r/t "Rockin' That Shit/Thing", though yeah it'd be a cause for concern if the entire album was like that.

Tim F, Saturday, 21 February 2009 04:40 (fifteen years ago) link

"walking on the moon" is nice but I'm really feeling "sweat it out" which is some classic kells shit

not into "Walking On The Moon" but "Sweat It Out" is good -- lol it's like the whole song was written to cater to Tim's fetish for messing-up-hair lyrics.
