Oh god yeah, I've always been fond of that video!

up to 17, this is so very cool.

Bee OK, Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:15 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah that Perfect Kiss video is one of the greatest things ever. Love watching how awkward they all look making this incredible music.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 23 May 2013 02:36 (eleven years ago) link

Ballot sent.

Very happy with my votes.

Austin, Thursday, 23 May 2013 03:15 (eleven years ago) link

Further listening has cemented my belief that Republic is far better than Technique, although Fine Time is as great as ever.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 23 May 2013 03:56 (eleven years ago) link

Now THAT is funny.

Austin, Thursday, 23 May 2013 04:12 (eleven years ago) link

You don't like Fine Time?

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 23 May 2013 04:31 (eleven years ago) link

I only really like the singles on Republic

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:13 (eleven years ago) link

OH, OUR LOVE IS LIKE THE FLOWERS
THE RAIN, THE SEA AND THE HOURS!

*shakes arse*

there should be a "which is your favorite NO song to dance to" poll option (or top 3, if we're being serious)

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:32 (eleven years ago) link

I have a friend in his early 50s who for a few decades now has had a rule that he will not start dancing until someone plays "Blue Monday."

The answer is pretty much most of them. I think folks also overlook, because of the lyrical content/Ian Curtis thing, that a lot of Joy Division stuff is pretty damn fuckin' danceable also.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

i have danced to so many NO songs -- both alone and in groups of various sizes. It's totally sublime! Dancing is at least 1/3 of what I like about this band tbh.
Trying to think of top 3 favorites may take some experimenting. How many more days do we have?

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:51 (eleven years ago) link

there are certain newer NO songs that (I think?) have bad reputations that are incredibly fun to sing along with (esp. "Rock the Shack" and "Jetstream")

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:53 (eleven years ago) link

Haha "Jetstream" did not make my ballot, but dang it's a fun chorus to sing with someone else.

Vinnie, Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

some of my fondest early 2000s memories include dancing to "Crystal."

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

ooh, that's a good one. i never went anywhere that it was played and dancing was appropriate. people are so boring!!

imo new order is great for dancing because you can attach to so many different parts of the song -- it also allows a variety of people to find something to grab onto
the lol depressive teen dance club i used to go in high school to would blow up when they played "true faith" and to this day i feel like the lyrics are floating on top of the music because i remember really ~feeling~ them one shitty friday night.

<3 dancing to new order!!!!

I only really like the singles on Republic

The singles from Republic are all pretty great (I even like Spooky in the album's sequence) but Everyone Everywhere and final three tracks (Times Change/Special/Avalanche) are also great. The whole album is drenched with that 90s flirtation with the end of days as party aesthetic that really works for me, Times Change particularly with it's menacing keyboard line and silly vocals. The videos really underscore this, too. Especially the Baywatch Regret one!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

the "Times Change" oboe would be my favorite thing were it not for the existence of the "Some Distant Memory" oboe solo.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:40 (eleven years ago) link

Top three for dancing:
1. Crystal (so hedonistic)
2. Thieves Like Us (used to request this when I lived in Houston, it was good for dancing and drinking at the same time)
3. Bizarre Love Triangle because everyone would mob the floor when it came on

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:41 (eleven years ago) link

possibly the most underappreciated New Order single is "Guilt Is A Useless Emotion"

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:42 (eleven years ago) link

sounds like Haddaway in the best way

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:44 (eleven years ago) link

Ok

Face Up for happy
Thieves Like Us for romance/slow dancin
True Faith for memories/self-loathing

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:45 (eleven years ago) link

Temptation is #4 for being just the best to dance to

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

'Fine Time' comes with its own set of acieed house moves.

i'm not going to be happy with those three tomorrow

good thing this isn't the real poll

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2013 16:06 (eleven years ago) link

Totally forgot about Guilt Is A Useless Emotion, not sure what I would have pushed off my ballot to include it but it is a good track and one of the few dance numbers NO did late career.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 23 May 2013 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

what do we think of Lost Sirens? "Californian Grass" ain't bad.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 May 2013 17:02 (eleven years ago) link

It didn't excite me like I expected it to. I've heard rumors they were in the studio with the Chemical Brothers again and Bernard must have a cache of work he did with Stuart Price, so i'm really hoping the stuff they're working on now is more electronic than their post Republic work.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 23 May 2013 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

What about the Bad Lieutenant album? Was anybody still paying attention at that point?

(I liked it, by the way)

Austin, Thursday, 23 May 2013 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

There were a few songs on it I liked but since I can't recall any of them by name, i'm not sure how much I really liked them.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 23 May 2013 19:55 (eleven years ago) link

Voted

Deafening silence (DL), Thursday, 23 May 2013 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

xxxxp

Californian Grass is the only late-period song that nearly made my list, but it ended up being #42 or something :\

Millsner, Thursday, 23 May 2013 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

OK, I've clearly been away too long and this is going to sound like the old fellow who doesn't get the internet but how are we submitting these? Email to Bee?

Ned Trifle X, Thursday, 23 May 2013 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

Opening post has all the deets.

WilliamC, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:00 (eleven years ago) link

Ahh, didn't get to end of post as was too excited making list. Thanks.

Ned Trifle X, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

so i listened to Get Ready for the first time today. what i really remember about it is that he really didn't want to wash his car. lol. also that one song i swear is a Primal Scream song.

Bee OK, Friday, 24 May 2013 01:29 (eleven years ago) link

it was a good album, much better than i thought it would have been. not sure if any tracks will make it into the Top 40 however.

Bee OK, Friday, 24 May 2013 01:29 (eleven years ago) link

Well, Bee, you've seen my ballot, so you already know which tracks I recommend and how fond I am of that album.

I think it's a really good one. Tack on 'Here to Stay' and you have one of their best.

Austin, Friday, 24 May 2013 01:46 (eleven years ago) link

top five on Get Ready:

Crystal
60 MPH
Vicious Streak
Slow Jam
Someone Like You

fyi there are other awesome songs on this album besides these five, it's a really great album

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 24 May 2013 02:45 (eleven years ago) link

My overpowering memory of "Someone Like You" is being out of my gourd in fall '02 in Chicago's Metro after a Sleater Kinney show, dancing with a lovely boy I picked up just before a busload of Koreans invaded the club.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 May 2013 02:48 (eleven years ago) link

How could you name Slow Jam, very easily the worst song in the New Order catalog, and not mention Primitive Notion, one of the best songs they've ever done.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 24 May 2013 02:49 (eleven years ago) link

Glad to see other people repping for Get Ready though.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 24 May 2013 02:58 (eleven years ago) link

I wanna live till I die
I wanna live to get high

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 May 2013 02:59 (eleven years ago) link

What about Run Wild? That's always been one of my favourites on that album. Vicious Streak is one I don't think I rated that much at the time but love it now.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 24 May 2013 02:59 (eleven years ago) link

Run Wild is good but the alternate mix by Steve Osborne is better than the version on the album.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 24 May 2013 03:15 (eleven years ago) link

Primitive Notion, one of the best songs they've ever done.

Yes.

Seriously, anybody who loves Joy Division and not New Order (or vice versa) is made a fool by that song.

On the other hand, I sometimes feel like I'm the only person who hates 'Run Wild' with a passion.

Austin, Friday, 24 May 2013 03:23 (eleven years ago) link

I like every song on Get Ready so

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 24 May 2013 03:32 (eleven years ago) link

Any love for 1963? It's going in my tracks ballot...

Neil S, Friday, 24 May 2013 10:57 (eleven years ago) link

Top three, I would have thought..
