What about Run Wild? That's always been one of my favourites on that album. Vicious Streak is one I don't think I rated that much at the time but love it now.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 24 May 2013 02:59 (eleven years ago) link

Run Wild is good but the alternate mix by Steve Osborne is better than the version on the album.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 24 May 2013 03:15 (eleven years ago) link

Primitive Notion, one of the best songs they've ever done.

Yes.

Seriously, anybody who loves Joy Division and not New Order (or vice versa) is made a fool by that song.

On the other hand, I sometimes feel like I'm the only person who hates 'Run Wild' with a passion.

Austin, Friday, 24 May 2013 03:23 (eleven years ago) link

I like every song on Get Ready so

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 24 May 2013 03:32 (eleven years ago) link

Any love for 1963? It's going in my tracks ballot...

Neil S, Friday, 24 May 2013 10:57 (eleven years ago) link

Top three, I would have thought..

Mark G, Friday, 24 May 2013 11:02 (eleven years ago) link

won't be in my top 30, for some reason i've never warmed to it

Sorry was there a decision re. dubs/remixes? Want to vote of Regret and the Weatherall remix...

Neil S, Friday, 24 May 2013 11:10 (eleven years ago) link

I'm thinking I really should listen to Get Ready again...

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 24 May 2013 11:24 (eleven years ago) link

I'm glad we got to vote for 40 - Regret is the only post-80s song in my top 20 but I had room to get into the later stuff further down the ballot. The title track of Waiting for the Sirens' Call is their best reunion song imo.

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 24 May 2013 11:45 (eleven years ago) link

I agree with this. I was kind of surprised how high I ended up putting it on my list but it's one of their most moving songs.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 24 May 2013 11:52 (eleven years ago) link

there're two Weatherall remixes of Regret

¬╡▫ ▫╞⌠ (sic), Friday, 24 May 2013 11:55 (eleven years ago) link

hah didn't know that. The one I'm familiar with is Regret (Sabres Slow 'n' Low mix).

Neil S, Friday, 24 May 2013 12:17 (eleven years ago) link

voted! Thanks Bee OK, really looking forward to the run-down for this one.

Neil S, Friday, 24 May 2013 13:04 (eleven years ago) link

1963 is high on my ballot, mostly for the '95 version on the Best Of. I didn't vote specifically for any remixes, but I think it blows the original out of the water.

Vinnie, Friday, 24 May 2013 14:14 (eleven years ago) link

I still vividly remember being in London as a teenager and finding out Substance there was a 2 cassette deal with all of the b-sides on it and how overjoyed I was to discover all of those songs

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 24 May 2013 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

i bought a used cassette of the hits part of Substance in middle school and had no idea there was a 2nd disc for years

da croupier, Friday, 24 May 2013 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

Substance on double vinyl was one of the first records I bought when I went to university 17 years ago, for the princely sum of £3. I still play it now.

Neil S, Friday, 24 May 2013 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

My brother had/has the double CD, which I borrowed off him to tape the b-sides.

Neil S, Friday, 24 May 2013 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

I can blame The Cure, New Order, Prince and Pet Shop Boys for causing me to gravitate towards bands' b-sides when I start really following them

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 24 May 2013 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

The Smiths were good in that regard too.

Neil S, Friday, 24 May 2013 15:09 (eleven years ago) link

I actually owned the "True Faith" 45, which came in its condensed Pettibone form and of course "1963"

I have that on a warped 12" with a nice big picture of a leaf on the cover:

Appropriately huge. One of the most iconic sleeves OF ALL TIME. /kanye

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 24 May 2013 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

Voted. Thanks to those who chimed in with standout tracks from the later albums. A couple of them made my ballot. I particularly liked Run Wild.

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 24 May 2013 16:58 (eleven years ago) link

Feel like top 5 sleeves would have been more appropriate for this band than top 5 videos.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 24 May 2013 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, I voted but only went for 3 videos. Would have voted for top sleeves and top remixes!

I bought the True Faith remix 12" because it was so pretty.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 24 May 2013 17:58 (eleven years ago) link

do we need to specify which mix we prefer of each sonq in question, or can we just you know say 'True Faith' or whatever?

piscesx, Friday, 24 May 2013 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

One of the things that put me off about NO initially but I now love about them is the extent to which productions like "Face Up" have this glossy futurism as well as a flimsy, low budget quality -- often within the same song. When I hear Movement (which I am really liking), it makes me think that a big piece of the reason for that dynamic is their roots in Martin Hannett's thin, clangy productions, which a record like Low Life builds on with drum machines and synths that sound like they'd never even plugged in until the engineer pushed record in the studio.

Btw, where is Dan Selzer in this poll? I almost can't imagine ILM polling NO without him.

putting together my ballot i am struck by a couple of things, mainly that (a) i need to listen to brotherhood way more and (b) i hope i never hear republic again

(slightly unfair exaggeration)

Bee OK, Saturday, 25 May 2013 01:44 (eleven years ago) link

Really glad you've come to appreciate Get Ready. You'll need to track down the pre-mix version now. Wish I had voted for the 60 MaH video now. Forgot how much I enjoyed it.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 25 May 2013 01:58 (eleven years ago) link

how many ballots have you received yet, bee ok?

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Saturday, 25 May 2013 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

Is it a well-known fact that the synth line from 'All Day Long' is from the opening of Wagner's Rheingold?

Sent my ballot last night.

Picking 40 songs was much easier than I thought. Only 6 from the 90's on. Ranking them however....

Whoops, I forgot all about '60mph' but I made up for it with 'Rock the Shack' at 40?
