why am i upset at madonna and missy and not mad at marriane faithful, when they both did a gap ad for the same reasons (money, heightened profile)

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 3 August 2003 04:57 (twenty years ago) link

Hm...

Faithfull does it -- a bit surprising, seems to be a sell-out, but secretly sorta cool ("Hey, I never thought that someone like Burroughs/Iggy/whoever could be well known this way.")

Madonna/Missy does it -- they're already mainstream figures with a whole image and place based on what they do as performers, so seeing them directly associated this way is a bit of a downer.

Might that be it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 3 August 2003 05:02 (twenty years ago) link

haha - maybe it's the reverse of indie sacredism ie. nick drake, minutemen are alright for ads, but madonna? horror! my only problem with the ad is that it's just so poorly executed - it reminded me of the britney scene in the last austin powers

oh come on. like any of you "smug"ers really were fans to get dsappointed in the first place, and i'm not talking about larcole and ned, etc. i'm not surprised to see the perpetual cadre of ILM mad-hatahs here (alex, horace, amateurist) -> all of whom were bitching when she pulled her american life video back in march, citing things like opportunism and integrity, etc. as if u need new reasons to hate! sheesh! sentences like this are so absurd: Madonna, however, has crossed the Rubicon. -- Alex in NYC (vassife...), August 1st, 2003.
since they're 17 years old or so! dismissing her as "over" is the oldest trick in the hateration book! u guys are disppointing me here!!

(and no the ad didn't disappoint me, since i had no expectations when i heard about it...as with everything else she's done this decade, it's sub-par but again as with all her recent mistakes: it is mirwais' fault. he should be blamed for this ad! oh and btw, at this point one case easily say no one but hipster/hip-hop historians will care all that much for missy elliott in 2019)

Wow --- interesting new development (and unprecedented, I think): You can now get the single of this song (for free, no less) at the Gap (the wife just walked in the door with it). Haven't played it yet (and probably won't), but an interesting artefact all the same.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 3 August 2003 15:36 (twenty years ago) link

st take advantage of all new licensing deals (such as w/ gap) to facilitate final attempts of promoting said product. oooh evil careerism - what ya'll forget is that this, + the bitchy divadom, + the numerous hypocritical ideological contradictions, is the reason uber-fans adore her! evil inscrutable materialistic bitch was someone we could always root for since it's one of multiple core identities we like to champion/identify with; that's why the late 90s wholly-pure, sanctified earth-mother yoga queen persona was so boring and starting to become so predictably irritating to longtime fans, until she redeemed herself w/ austin powers.Music videos and deluded further attempts at movie glory -> it was eclipsing all the foibles we like, 'cuz she was pretending that she didn't have them anymore. (because she had, ohmygawd, given birth...so few people accomplish that!) we never made her a star due to her spiritual purity; rather the contrary! the earth mother stuff was in conflict w/ very bond of the basic star-fan relationship, since it was trying to totaly redefine the original star; gladly, all of this hustling now proves that a few habits never change. what u may despise, we admire! as all of the manipulative crassness (which she is quite self-conscious of by now) is one of the few constants throughout the decades; it makes her identifiably endearing. there's still too much residual rockist thinking on this thread, or that's probably the wrong term, but still whatever it is its buried very deeply here, the reactions which seem to be filtered through some idealistic filter. i just wish she hadn't used missy, since it's dates this period so badly, but such a calculated attempt also shows that she herself knows that her album was a failure and god-willing, she'll ditch mirwais on her next one

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

yaargh my post was cut, but first part was: madonna inc (maverick ) either lost more $ on flopped album than it ever thought it would, or didn;t come close to making domestically what it prayed it could, so now it must take...etcetra

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:17 (twenty years ago) link

I lay Madonna's current problems more at the feet of Guy Ritchie than Mirwais: I think a lot of the mistakes she has made come from wanting to be seen as one of the common people, and that was something she never wanted to be pre-hooking up with Ritchie.

Larcole (Nicole), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:19 (twenty years ago) link

Madonna is one of the least talented people I've ever seen in my life - I await her impending commercial decline with relish

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:26 (twenty years ago) link

that may be true; before she never played common, but grew from winkingly acknowledging her common roots as she played with the role of a glamour superstar, to actually living out the role of glamour star itself by inhabiting it in toto, when her sense of "entitlement," based n hard work/effort took over her self-image ("i've worked so hard for this star-identity, i deserve it, i AM it"). then she tried to reverse the process; her husband isn't even really "common," is he ? it has to do w/ his machismo thing, and even that bit of working class male heterosexual swagger that she now lauds (when she would before cheer gender ambiguity) has thrown a bit of a wrench into her relationship with longstanding gay male fans, who form the core of her fandom (there was an essay on this on gay.com shortly after they got hitched). well if the past is any indication, she will part with him sooner than we can reckon...from rodman to leon to him, i think she's determinedly going in a pan-racial direction. she MUST date an asian after this. i nominate jet li but, failing that, hu jintao

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:37 (twenty years ago) link

i like the ad, not bad for Gap

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 3 August 2003 17:00 (twenty years ago) link

I think a lot of the mistakes she has made come from wanting to be seen as one of the common people

Cut an ad that serves Gap,
Slam a war, ignore the flap.
Talk real posh, now raise a kid,
Act just like Diana did
But still you'll never get it right,
cos when you're bored in bed at night,
watching Missy take it all,
if you ditch your Guy you could stop your fall.

Sing along with the common people,
sing along and it might just get you through,
laugh along with the common people,
laugh along even though they're laughing at you,
and the stupid things that you do.
Because you think that being them is cool.

"Mad-hatas"? "Opportunism and integrity"?

I'm so tired of people not even reading my posts and caricaturing me. I said nothing about opportunism or any such thing. I only noted how genial the ad was, how it reminded me of Sesame Street in its sunniness and use of long shots, and how it seemed a bit *too* genial to sell soda cans.

I'll ask for an apology, but I don't necessarily expect one.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:44 (twenty years ago) link

oh amateurist, lighten up, and if you really feel pissed, i'm sorry - i'm not on here to get into catfights! you may have not seen the american life video, and i may still be unclear as to your deepest feelings about her, but i distinctly remember you calling madonna "insufferable" on that thread back in the spring, and this memory was enough for me to put you in the "hatah" category for the sake of discussion okay?? please!

and knocking my posting style which is often much more casual (and typo ridden) than yours, or saying that you "get a certain relief" in believing in your superiority/my stupidity compared to you, certainly DOESN'T help remove the "smug" brush from your reputation - a bit condescending, isn't it? and goes further to prove my theory that people who have mondo problems w/ madonna or find her repulsive or insufferable or whatever, usually hate fun (unless they direct their passion towards dubious substitutes i suppose, like...killing joke? =)

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:52 (twenty years ago) link

Apology accepted. And I apologize for calling you an idiot and/or lazy.

I do find Madonna hard to take insofar as her interviews and pretentions to political outspokenness go, which I think is what people were discussing when I called her "insufferable."

I couldn't care less whether people appear in advertisements, nor did I say anything about careerism (pro or con) which I think was the substance of the debates here.

d goes further to prove my theory that people who have mondo problems w/ madonna or find her repulsive or insufferable or whatever, usually hate fun (unless they direct their passion towards dubious substitutes i suppose, like...killing joke? =)

For a start, leave Killing Joke out of this. Secondly, you're making a giant leap by thinking I have a huge problem with Madonna. I don't, and I own and enjoy a few of her records, actually. If I did, in fact, loathe her, I wouldn't have been so surprised at this Gap ad, nor would have I have found it as tragic as I do. I actually have higher expectations for the woman, which is why I find it so tragic that she's pulling such a desperate stunt. I get the impression that it's not the lack of success of her record that's distressing her, but rather the gradual erosion of her relevance that is causing her to make such rash decisions. She should be above such concerns.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 3 August 2003 23:59 (twenty years ago) link

this is unprecedented, no? =)

>For a start, leave Killing Joke out of this

and nah, i disagree. i don't think madonna is as concerned with her star waning as much as with her assets decreasing, since she views everything through financial eyes first. this was a business move, as is the upcoming publishng of the children's books (in multiple languages?! etc.), to a lesser extent. maverick has had a tough time following up on michelle branch's success, and now even branch wants out. she needs to find herself another alanis or something soon, since these days no record label can afford such a long dry-spell without calling it a day, and i think she's milked her star leverage to keep the company afloat as long as he could. besides, her star is still shining at an even, consistent wattage outside the US, as the album sold between 8 to 10 million copies in the worldwide market, not counting north america. but she knows that she need to solidify her domestic sales again and soon, or else maverick sink faster than you can say "candlebox"

Madonna is a lost cause. Hardly surprising.

I have lost all respect for Missy Elliot over this. She can go fuck herself.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 4 August 2003 11:22 (twenty years ago) link

I work part-time at the Gap, and there's a bank of plasma monitors over the register. They usually just show Gap images, but right now the Missy/Madonna commercial runs pretty much continuously (without sound, since there's already a music mix pumping over the speakers).

...And people are FASCINATED by the ad. They stand there in little groups, frozen, staring up at the screens. (Occasionally, they'll break into little conversations about whether or not Madonna's "still got it," etc.) The level of attention is a little unnerving: you'd think they've never seen televised images of these entertainers before. Anyway, by this barometer, the commercial sure is popular.

a group of girls at my office, typical GAP shoppers you could say, were going on and on about how cute this ad is.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 25 August 2003 19:17 (twenty years ago) link

It seems they've clipped the ad a little bit, excising the final scene of Madonna asserting "I can do that too," trying to mimic Missy's split.
