i don't normally have a problem with the singing but this has the feel of a rough guide vocal that never got replaced

Unmentioned above, but the The Juan Maclean returned with a single in April:

Nancy Whang's vocal aside, its not as endearingly idiosyncratic as past outings. And I like Whang more on Classix's "All You're Waiting For".

not really into it. it's great that he had this complicated algorithm for deciding which background samples to use or whatever, but it's not really borne out in the music, idk.

I'm a few years behind but the Peter Gordon & Love of Life Orchestra album is so so good. Got the sensuous smoothness of 'Still You' and the ridiculous and lovely mess that is 'That Hat' on a loop here.

Being assisted by James Murphy could be the best thing to happen to New Order in years. Unfortunately DFA says it ain't happening. So bummed.
― brotherlovesdub, Monday, 1 September 2014 18:31 (ten years ago) link
cannot believe i have not done this before, but i have just set up a playlist that puts 'moon unit' parts 1-4 by mogg and naudascher in order that were spread across the 2cd set, nobody knows.
question :
why on earth did they mix up the ordering on the comp, and, were they ever released as a standalone release as an ep/mini-lp ?

(saw them live at glastonbury 2005, and they were truly fantastic. which given it was late sunday and i was in a rather damaged state is a statement to just how wonderful their set was)

I loved it! But yeah, it didn't get the attention it deserved upon release.
I'm still waiting on people to notice what Dan Bodan's been doing- his first two singles ("DP" and "Aaron") were pretty meh, but the subsequent stuff has been wonderful, especially the M.E.S.H.-produced "Anonymous":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzEaoK6n5TE

shared for free for a limited time on substack, an interview with Jonathan Galkin, who apparently was shut out last year:https://firstfloor.substack.com/p/jonathan-galkin-helped-start-dfa
sounds like DFA is completely dead except as a brand for James Murphy. the writing was kind of on the wall for a while, but it’s depressing to hear what an ongoing clusterfuck things were for a long time

― papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 15 September 2021 18:47 (three years ago) link
but my time with the label came to an end in July. One day I came to work and the locks were changed. It was a really sad day, and the only information I got was that the partnership—of which I was part as a minority owner—had made the decision to cut off the label. And then it got ugly, with lawyers involved.
Ouch

― change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 15 September 2021 19:15 (three years ago) link
Between him and the rich kid heir who set up the initial studio, that sounds like a nightmare (and miracle it didn't blow up sooner).
― papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 15 September 2021 19:30 (three years ago) link
it sounds like James Murphy just wanted to pretend the label didn’t exist anymore, even though it was in the same building as the studio? it all just seems irritating and wacky until the locked doors and lawyers come into the picture

Gross demonstrations of power and control like those alleged here rarely happen in isolation. What a sad end to it all.
― Position Position, Thursday, 16 September 2021 00:40 (three years ago) link
It's a classic case of lack of communication. One person is doing something and another person creates a narrative around what the other person is or is not doing. Those two narratives diverge as a result of further lack of communication and the narrative gulf gets wider and wilder between what is actually happening and what someone else thinks is happening. Conflict is not abuse!

― ufo, Thursday, 16 September 2021 02:37 (three years ago) link
both bill brewster and trevor jackson have tweeted this morning how this is not an entirely balanced representation of the story, and there is a lot more to it.
as a fan in the uk who only ever bought stuff on cd, for me things fell apart after the deal with EMI was killed off.no more compilations, no more cd singles.album releases were licenced out to different labels, some of which were available on cd, many of which were not, certainly not as easily.subsequently, i have not heard anything on DFA for a very long time now.
been quite tempted to dive into these digital compilations as they seem to cover a lot, but a quick flick through 2014, and i don't think i would be listening to too much of it too often.
