oh! london calling poll winner iirc so expected higher but feels like a good spot for it.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:15 (ten years ago) link

I forgot it won that poll. It's the highest ranking London Calling track on my ballot so I'm good with it.

Simonon was SO HOT.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:18 (ten years ago) link

Sometimes I envy the band's energy, but then I think about the copious amount of speed they and every punk band was doing and I don't feel so bad.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:19 (ten years ago) link

"Spanish Bombs" boasts the best mangled Spanish I've ever heard, and it took months before the Internet to decipher it.

I do appreciate the fact that he sings with a Barcelona accent. It's Spanish-Spanish!

love this, i thought maybe it had missed out by this point

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:32 (ten years ago) link

I think my #1 missed out. :(

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:32 (ten years ago) link

I like the story from the box set about how they had somebody dig up Joe's copy of POMB and ship it to the studio in New York because nobody they talked to over here knew the song or who The Equals were.

SEVEN!

Mark G, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:41 (ten years ago) link

loooove the version on From Here to Eternity.

Ha, that version -- or, more accurately, Chimes' playing on it -- actually makes me angry. He removed Topper's swing and replaced it with plod.

Nah, they picked that one up off a jukebox at bar near a studio.

Uncle Cyril O'Boogie (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:42 (ten years ago) link

Mark G, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:43 (ten years ago) link

Pretty clear what's left in store here, but the order may be a surprise.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:44 (ten years ago) link

I have forgotten all of them on purpose.

(except one)

Mark G, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:46 (ten years ago) link

First time I've ever heard the original--excellent. Had the Clash #2.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:50 (ten years ago) link

Total jam.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:50 (ten years ago) link

What a track, it's as good as rock gets, so many hooks

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:51 (ten years ago) link

So many nutty vocal/lyrical asides in this.

Esperanto, why don't you come to your senses? (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:52 (ten years ago) link

no way is the Clash "I Fought The Law" better than the Bobby Fuller version

crüt, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:52 (ten years ago) link

I thought I was alone about RDF.

Then you people and your Grosse Pointe Blank discovered it.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:53 (ten years ago) link

When I was in high school I entered some Daughters of Democracy contest or something, because I knew there was an open slot so I was guaranteed to win something. And I wrote a boilerplate speech about democracy and patriotism and sent in a tape of myself reciting it. And I made sure to have, for some reason, "Rudie Can't Fail" playing faintly in the background. I came in second. Won $50.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:55 (ten years ago) link

magnificent

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:56 (ten years ago) link

i think i had this 4th but it could easily have been higher. joyous.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:57 (ten years ago) link

Topper is brilliant on this again, switching between beats, and those little double-snares before each verse and chorus are a lovely touch

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:58 (ten years ago) link

Is it just coincidence that both The Clash and The Specials had Rudi(e) songs?
