love the sound of the bass

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:05 (ten years ago) link

I like that Lennox version! Never heard that, and dig that she didn't switch the gender.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:06 (ten years ago) link

I'll rep for Lennox's covers of "No More 'I Love You's'" and "Waiting in Vain" off of the same album, but her "Train in Vain" cover is just...yuck!

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:07 (ten years ago) link

Also, with 5 slots to go, I can only think of 2 sure things. Weird...

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:07 (ten years ago) link

I can think of 4.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:08 (ten years ago) link

Wait, 3...

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:08 (ten years ago) link

I think I have to shed a tear here for my #s 1, 4 & 7.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:09 (ten years ago) link

Xpost Clash didn't hide "Train in Vain," it was added after the art was done!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:10 (ten years ago) link

Would "Train in Vain" be considered a hidden track? I was under the impression it was written and recorded in a few days after the London Calling sessions had ended, and the artwork had already gone to the printers so they couldn't add it on.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:10 (ten years ago) link

whoops xpost

Gukbe, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:10 (ten years ago) link

I'll rep for Lennox's covers of "No More 'I Love You's'" and "Waiting in Vain" off of the same album,

and "Something So Right."

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:11 (ten years ago) link

Aw, Police on my Back was my #2.

too low

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:12 (ten years ago) link

Starting to think Protex Blue might not make it.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:12 (ten years ago) link

BOOOOOOOOOO

TOO LOW

Y'All SUCK

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:13 (ten years ago) link

the only one to fall where I ranked it thus far.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:13 (ten years ago) link

(was my number 1)

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:14 (ten years ago) link

i think i have worked out the remaining 4. 3 obvious and 1 which would be a top 4 surprise but more of a surprise not to make it at all.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:14 (ten years ago) link

my #1

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:15 (ten years ago) link

See, Al knows what's up.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:16 (ten years ago) link

Drums on "Safe European Home" up there with opening snare hit in "Like a Rolling Stone."

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:17 (ten years ago) link

I can't remember what's been and what's not been, I'm awash in an endless sea of Clash. Bring it on.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:17 (ten years ago) link

Good place to link to a blog with the isolated tracks:

http://news.theclashblog.com/the-clash-songs-stripped/

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:17 (ten years ago) link

Something else I love about the Clash is how they were a band that most certainly did not simply replicate the studio versions live. I totally love that they knew how to shape up in the studio, but when they played they were ragged, sloppy and raw in all the best ways.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:19 (ten years ago) link

Next one has the lowest number of votes in the Top 10, but curiously, no #1s.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:20 (ten years ago) link

4. Janie Jones - 662 pts - 23 votes

That wasn't one of the ones I was thinking of--didn't even know it was that beloved. Then again, Give 'em Enough Rope was always the one (proper) Clash record I could never fully embrace.

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:21 (ten years ago) link

i came to rope last of all for some reason and with low expectations. i knew tommy gun and english civil war and nothing else. this opener floored me instantly. i have a vivid memory of just snapping to attention.

janie jones my highest track from the first album, similar to the other best songs on there but just more somehow. lucky lady!

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:23 (ten years ago) link

Safe European Home sounds like terror, pulls off the weird trick of being both contemptuous and sympathetic to its point of view, and uses the structure of a novelty song to create something very fucking serious. It was my number three.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:26 (ten years ago) link

Safe European Home sounds like terror

OTM

xxp Lennox: Well, I confess, I don't like "Train in Vain" much anyway so there's not much at stake for me. Why must his love interest explain anything? Get over it dude!

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:28 (ten years ago) link

My god, those isolates. Someone MUST make a mid-90s post-rave UK euphoric piano house track out of the Rock The Casbah piano isolate.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:29 (ten years ago) link

Listening to "Rope" right now. Younger daughter thought they were singing "Julie's Been Working for the Duck Squad."

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:29 (ten years ago) link

that works perfectly for me. Don't mess with ducks, kids. They're vicious little fuckers.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:30 (ten years ago) link

well now i want to come up with duck-related alternate lyrics

Gukbe, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:30 (ten years ago) link

next one also has no #1 votes

Gukbe, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:31 (ten years ago) link

The call and response vocals on SEH are a peak.

"I've got my giant hit 'Disco Duck' album"

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:33 (ten years ago) link

FHTE version is epic, even taking into account Chimes.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:33 (ten years ago) link

Voted for "Straight To Hell," but didn't think it was gonna place at this point. Woo!

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:33 (ten years ago) link

I only have one of these last two pegged. I'm gonna slap myself when I see the other, aren't I?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:34 (ten years ago) link

figured this had to place somewhere. not a fan m'self.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:34 (ten years ago) link

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:34 (ten years ago) link
