actually "ego" was going to be the second single but r&b/urban radio started playing "diva" a lot so they made that the second single

hmmmm

rev. al shipley (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:29 (fifteen years ago) link

dude i have not even listened to "ego," "smash into you" or "scared of lonely" since like october. do you really think they'd make something that was essentially a b-side a single?

"disappear" is really good. the bridge is just amazing, it kills me every time. i kind of wish she made a whole song around that hook.

i see what you're saying regarding radio play and "halo" jordan, but i still think it's a great song. among many other things that make it great, bey's inflections on the titular word are just :-O

k3vin k., Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:31 (fifteen years ago) link

"ego" is great but way too vintage to be a hit on modern radio - would be like sharon jones going top 10 or something

rev. al shipley (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:32 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah im listening to "smash" right now, and it's nothing special at all, i'd be really disappointed if it was a single.

k3vin k., Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:33 (fifteen years ago) link

i think to some extent "ego" and "if i were a boy" are just a little too out of place in radio right now, if you imagine it sandwiched in between "just dance" and "single ladies" and "heartless" and "turnin me on" etc. kinda just not of the right tempo/mood nowadays i think

rev. al shipley (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:35 (fifteen years ago) link

"ego" is a nice song, but for what the lyrics are, the rest of it is kind of toothless, no? "radio" and "disappear" are the best choices, where is lex to back me up

k3vin k., Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:43 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean he's sleeping obv but you feel

k3vin k., Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:43 (fifteen years ago) link

I dunno, "Ego" is very anthemic... even if the production isn't very 'modern,', I could see it being big (if not on Pop it'll definitely do well on R&B... everyone I know loves it). I can't hear "Disappear" on the radio.

EGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
SUCH A HUGE EGOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I LOVE HIS BIG EEEEEGGGGGOOOOOOOO

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:49 (fifteen years ago) link

dude there's always a place for a ballad on the radio. all im saying is if they're going to do the double single thing again, it would make the most sense to go with "radio" and "disappear" (ie banger + ballad), which after all are actually on the album proper

k3vin k., Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:54 (fifteen years ago) link

well, they did do that with "diva" and "halo"

rev. al shipley (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:54 (fifteen years ago) link

and "single ladies" and "if i were a boy" !!!!

k3vin k., Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:55 (fifteen years ago) link

have either of you hear lady gaga's album? I'm kind of curious about it lol

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm not sure if I love or hate "poker face" ... like it's so awful but it's so.... good?

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:57 (fifteen years ago) link

haha i havent knowingly heard a single lady gaga song tbh.

lex' rants scared me away

k3vin k., Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:57 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah my school's paper got sent the album when "just dance" was still bubbling and kind of exciting and i dont remember anything about it besides thinking that nothing was at all as good as "just dance" but there are a few good house-for-12-year-olds songs, but i dont remember which

rev. al shipley (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm def the biggest "just dance" backer on ilx- song is fucking huge imo

rev. al shipley (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:59 (fifteen years ago) link

yes that synthline is so massive. you should listen to that at least k3vin

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 19 February 2009 07:00 (fifteen years ago) link

here's my take on just dance, from the gaga thread

i think "just dance" is an all time banger but i dont know if i care much about gaga herself. i think the song is extremely well-written in terms of getting across the feeling of being really fucked up and not caring about anything but dancing. you don't really hear lyrics as straightforward as "I love this record baby but I can't see straight anymore/ Keep it cool, what's the name of this club?/ I can't remember but it's alright, a-alright" on pop radio and i think that's the song's biggest strength, esp. compared to awfully generic shit like "hot n cold" and "womanizer"

it's the same reason why that veronicas song sticks out to me besides being sonically bonkers. "i feel so untouched right now" is arresting in the same manner to me as "i love this record baby but i can't see straight anymore"

we get sent like all def jam albums (i think) but that's about it. it's a pretty antiquated system since obv no one in college needs a physical advance copy of albums in order to review them
