yeah my school's paper got sent the album when "just dance" was still bubbling and kind of exciting and i dont remember anything about it besides thinking that nothing was at all as good as "just dance" but there are a few good house-for-12-year-olds songs, but i dont remember which

rev. al shipley (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm def the biggest "just dance" backer on ilx- song is fucking huge imo

rev. al shipley (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 February 2009 06:59 (fifteen years ago) link

yes that synthline is so massive. you should listen to that at least k3vin

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 19 February 2009 07:00 (fifteen years ago) link

here's my take on just dance, from the gaga thread

i think "just dance" is an all time banger but i dont know if i care much about gaga herself. i think the song is extremely well-written in terms of getting across the feeling of being really fucked up and not caring about anything but dancing. you don't really hear lyrics as straightforward as "I love this record baby but I can't see straight anymore/ Keep it cool, what's the name of this club?/ I can't remember but it's alright, a-alright" on pop radio and i think that's the song's biggest strength, esp. compared to awfully generic shit like "hot n cold" and "womanizer"

it's the same reason why that veronicas song sticks out to me besides being sonically bonkers. "i feel so untouched right now" is arresting in the same manner to me as "i love this record baby but i can't see straight anymore"

'la la land' is good but these are my favourite lovato joints:

lex pretend, Thursday, 19 February 2009 11:53 (fifteen years ago) link

also i STILL can't get with 'my life would suck without you' - the verses are ok but i've heard them maybe 50 times already on sundry dr luke productions from sugababes to paris hilton, and the chorus is somehow both too much (so blarey) and too little (so lazily written). but then i think my december was way underrated - the best tracks on it ('hole', 'never again', 'one minute') are better than anything on breakaway. and also REALLY HOOKY - i can't believe all the people whinging about how it was too dark and difficult couldn't hear those tracks' huge, huge hooks.

i'm glad 'diva' was chosen as the single - i really assumed it'd just be an album curio at first. female r&b has been missing that kind of swagger lately (ciara's insistence on releasing lovelorn ballads and midtempo grooves instead of her own swagger tracks as singles hasn't helped.) if it really was beyoncé's decision that's even better - she's beyoncé fucking knowles, i am glad she sees herself as beyond such concerns as "would this sound better amid tired refried lady gaga electro and kelly clarkson desperately trying to prove she's still fun".

obv i'm not that familiar w/US radio but i find it tough to believe that 'halo' isn't eminently suited to a post 'umbrella', 'bleeding love', 'right here (departed)' radio landscape.

lex pretend, Thursday, 19 February 2009 12:02 (fifteen years ago) link

so lex if she were to release another pair of singles, which two would you want them to be?

k3vin k., Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago) link

I never heard "Right Here" on the radio even once. It wasn't a big hit like "Umbrella" and "Bleeding Love" were.

The Reverend (rev), Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:34 (fifteen years ago) link

And thank god, too. What an awful song.

The Reverend (rev), Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:34 (fifteen years ago) link

i want the next pair of singles to be 'scared of lonely' and 'sweet dreams'! (yeah, the only single i hear left on the beyoncé side is 'broken hearted girl', though 'disappear' is my favourite.) i never heard the demo of SOL that brainwasher prefers, but i love the album version so much that i don't want to - it doesn't sound like an obvious single but i think it would definitely stand out enough to catch people's ears - it's so ridiculously rococo. tbh by the time you get to the 5th single off an album, its predecessors should have done the heavy promo lifting already. can just imagine beyoncé running frantically around an empty versailles, dressed in full regalia, for the video.

i think releasing another pair of singles might be overkill though...certainly in the UK, where only one-by-one really works. 'single ladies' has only just been officially released here, though 'halo' has already cracked the top 100 too - no idea how they'll manage the timing when it comes to 'diva'. plus she got an extra unexpected single at xmas when 'listen' went top 10 b/c of the x factor. britain o_0

lex pretend, Thursday, 19 February 2009 17:53 (fifteen years ago) link

'sweet dreams' would be fun, i could get behind that! i don't hear what you hear at all in 'scared of lonely' tho, i'd rather listen to just about any song on the album than that. i could get behind either 'broken hearted girl' or 'disappear' tho

k3vin k., Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:07 (fifteen years ago) link

the 'scared of lonely' arrangement is some kind of genius - so much ornamentation, so many random trilling tangents, yet it never seems overcooked or blarey - just this decadent frenzy of sumptuousness.

lex pretend, Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:15 (fifteen years ago) link

pour one out for the teenpoppers, out there in dense forests of livejournal

They still wander out to civilization on occasion to link to Paramore Twilight soundtrack songs that are doing surprisingly well on Radio Disney at the moment.

The song was originally for Brandy, who would've killed it....

4 2 KERI HILSON FEATURI TURNIN ME ON

do you guys think Keri is going to get another hit or was "Turnin Me On" only big because of Wayne? I'm hoping that isn't the case but...

― i brings that levity (The Brainwasher), Thursday, February 19, 2009 12:33 AM (Yesterday) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

i think it's one of Wayne's best recent guest appearances, and obviously any song w/ him on it right now is going to get a leg up in airplay right off the bat. but Wayne's been on a lot of singles in the past year that haven't done as well as "Turnin' Me On," so you gotta assume that the singer and/or the song are the variables. if Keri's going to do well at this point it's obviously going to be kind of a slowly growing series of hits, more like say Keyshia Cole's first album than the way Ciara got a smash right out of the box. is there any word of what Keri's next single will be yet?
