i'm sure plenty on ilx might agree with you whether you're joking or not but hair metal is still one of the reasons metal gets sneered at by some.

because there are very serious gents out in the world who are singing about dragons and NOT using hairspray
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 02:14 (ten years ago) link
we'd better make sure we slap it down some more since it's obviously the dominant musical genre these days
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 02:15 (ten years ago) link
If I ever sneer at metal it's when people take it too seriously.

to be fair tho, I think the 'Gulf War' remix was largely the invention of DJs and not Styx themselves....
Pretty much entirely iirc.

Actually maybe it was a good thing rock radio never existed here after all as it would have just been all this shit since the only time normal radio played any rawk it was ballads. I can just imagine the effect on the charts it would have had.

― Hooks on Phoenix worked for me (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 14:57 (ten years ago) link
Well, it's not really that interesting to seriously listen to a bunch of decades-old things and pick the wors, with no real criteria other than taste, if you actually dislike them. However, this thread is actually GREBT because most people who are engaging with it are using it to talk about things we like or to critically discuss rock ballads, which AG seems completely OK with.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 15:11 (ten years ago) link
xxpost AG - because you have a definition of metal that wasn't always the definition of metal and isn't the definition now. when i was a kid a lot of these stupid songs meant a great deal to me and many of them are still great examples of rock and pop metal songwriting, something metal could use more of today IMO
― usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 15:26 (ten years ago) link
i dont really have a definition of metal. I'm with chuck that a lot of things that arent considered metal are , at least partly, metal. Obviously my definitions aren't as broad as chucks. As for this thread ballads/power ballads generally are shit imo and none-more-so than rock ballads.

"wait" is pretty awful but man that's good guitar playing. with the double-tapping and whammy bar stuff he almost gets into like pedal steel territory
― R'LIAH (goole), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:13 (ten years ago) link

"wait" is great
but yeah he's probably overlooked, he had a kind odd style...reminds me of a pop metal adaptation of alan holdworth, kinda...i wonder if he was into that kinda stuff, really "liquid" sounding style.....

hair metal solos are an element of music that's not been written about enough, the best of them were so composed and melodic while at the same time guys were really trying to one-up each other in terms of trick and pyrotechnics.....
― usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:35 (ten years ago) link
otm
the worst of them were whammy-bar screech fests

I always repped for Bratta. I can listen to Pride for his playing. I think a lot of hair metal lead playing was pretty crude (talking about late Sunset Strip stuff) but Bratta actually had the chops that these guys used to claim.

I did an air band to Bon Jovi's deep cut "Blood on Blood" in Gr 5, when I was 10. (Do they still do those in elementary schools??) I honestly had no idea when I was mouthing the words what "Danny knew this white trash girl/We each threw in a 10/She took us to this cheap motel/And turned us into men" was describing.

Sean Morpheus 1 year agoI have such a soft spot for the 80's ballads because they show and bring out the feminine side of these supposed hard guys who make womanizing an art form. They truly inside do feel mor for and about females than just the physical. And that is where the inspiration comes for alot of this romantic stuff. Yes some of it is contrived to make money at the time, but alot is also sincere and that is admirable. Guys need to start representing our gender better and showing females how special they are.
