xxpost AG - because you have a definition of metal that wasn't always the definition of metal and isn't the definition now. when i was a kid a lot of these stupid songs meant a great deal to me and many of them are still great examples of rock and pop metal songwriting, something metal could use more of today IMO

i dont really have a definition of metal. I'm with chuck that a lot of things that arent considered metal are , at least partly, metal. Obviously my definitions aren't as broad as chucks.
As for this thread ballads/power ballads generally are shit imo and none-more-so than rock ballads.

this is a sad story!

I've argued enough with AG for three lifetimes, so I'll just sit back and watch this one.

"wait" is pretty awful but man that's good guitar playing. with the double-tapping and whammy bar stuff he almost gets into like pedal steel territory

R'LIAH (goole), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:13 (ten years ago) link

j perhaps you could be so kind to elaborate on what you meant as idgi

"wait" is great

but yeah he's probably overlooked, he had a kind odd style...reminds me of a pop metal adaptation of alan holdworth, kinda...i wonder if he was into that kinda stuff, really "liquid" sounding style.....

hi

OutdoorFish, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link

hair metal solos are an element of music that's not been written about enough, the best of them were so composed and melodic while at the same time guys were really trying to one-up each other in terms of trick and pyrotechnics.....

usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:35 (ten years ago) link

otm

the worst of them were whammy-bar screech fests

I always repped for Bratta. I can listen to Pride for his playing. I think a lot of hair metal lead playing was pretty crude (talking about late Sunset Strip stuff) but Bratta actually had the chops that these guys used to claim.

"we were all here just playing our classy brand of innocent poofyhaircore and Warrant just comes out with these strip club guitar riffs, and starts swingin' these wild, ribald double entendres around carelessly and....I don't know, suddenly, I had to ask myself if I could be a part of this new regime. if this was where glam metal was going...I wanted out"

when i was a kid, I didn't really listen to lyrics much, but from the bum warming his hands by the trash can fire in the video, I figured "where the down boys go" was to a homeless camp. like on some open letter to a landlord ish.

I did an air band to Bon Jovi's deep cut "Blood on Blood" in Gr 5, when I was 10. (Do they still do those in elementary schools??) I honestly had no idea when I was mouthing the words what "Danny knew this white trash girl/We each threw in a 10/She took us to this cheap motel/And turned us into men" was describing.

I have such a soft spot for the 80's ballads because they show and bring out the feminine side of these supposed hard guys who make womanizing an art form. They truly inside do feel mor for and about females than just the physical. And that is where the inspiration comes for alot of this romantic stuff. Yes some of it is contrived to make money at the time, but alot is also sincere and that is admirable. Guys need to start representing our gender better and showing females how special they are.

Silent Lucidity sounds to me more like a Pink Floyd The Wall rip than a true 80s power ballad.

Ha, I kept trying to make that point on this thread.

strangely i kinda think Steven Tyler's entire power ballad style during their 1987-1993 comeback period was a straight rip from Easy Like Sunday Morning.

omar little, Friday, 13 July 2018 00:45 (five years ago) link

Crying by Aerosmith is the worst offender.

Dinsdale, Saturday, 14 July 2018 05:59 (five years ago) link

Journey "Open Arms"
Michael Bolton "That's What Love Is All About"
Survivor "The Search Is Over"
Five For Fighting "Superman"
Bob Segar "Mainstreet"
Kid Rock "Only God Knows Why"
Hinder "Better Than Me"
Nickleback "If Everyone Cared"

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 July 2018 06:30 (five years ago) link

so that's a list of bad songs.

the following are good songs:
Silent Lucidity
Love Song
Love Bites
The Flame
I Want To Know What Love Is
Heaven

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 July 2018 06:35 (five years ago) link

The best Aerosmith power ballad besides "Dream On" is either "Angel" or "What It Takes" (not counting "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" since they didn't write it).

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 July 2018 06:37 (five years ago) link

What It Takes, sure.

Angel.....naaaaw
