Yeah, pretty much what Licorice Oratorio said.

Oh I loved My God is Blue. Took me a few plays to really get into it but so did Sexuality. Some of my favourite production on an album in recent years.

This is the song I'd recommend trying first.

I think Daft Punk were taking notes from the last two Tellier records for RAM.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 12 August 2013 18:42 (ten years ago) link

I really enjoy the album, but I don't really go back to it. There's no killer single on it.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 12 August 2013 18:52 (ten years ago) link

its so much better and more cool than any daft punk bs

lag∞n, Monday, 12 August 2013 20:31 (ten years ago) link

i'm surprised at how often tellier hits the spot when i can't decide what to listen to

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 13 August 2013 01:07 (ten years ago) link

So the next album will be all instrumental except for one track.
it's supposed to be the OST of an imaginary movie...

Uh hoh

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 13:21 (ten years ago) link

well, I suppose it won't be a major album but it could be a smooth soundtrack for dinner parties...

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 13:37 (ten years ago) link

people are still doing the "soundtrack for an imaginary movie" thing huh

socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link

anyway ya this last one was a letdown in the sense that i listened to it a few times and forget it existed, like, i feel, most of the world :/

socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link

i got into it, its rad

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 19:18 (ten years ago) link

im gonna try it again

lag∞n, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 15:52 (ten years ago) link

the new single is a remake of la ritournelle. except it's boring.

you guys are mean

lag∞n, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 16:53 (ten years ago) link

I'm very disappointed with the single, it is almost an exact copy of La Ritournelle and what's the point in that?

I love this guy but suddenly I don't have much interest in this album at all.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 1 October 2013 21:44 (ten years ago) link

Still haven't heard Confection, but follow up album L'Aventura will arrive next month: http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=24614
A little more background (and a different release date) here: http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2014/apr/30/sebastian-tellier-ladulte-new-music. "L'Adulte" sounds fantastic.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 13:44 (ten years ago) link

That single is great. The last album was a bit of a dud. Only felt the need to hear it once as it was pretty boring.

When My God is Blue came out I remember thinking, oh great another four years until his next album but here we are with his third album in three years. Just hope this is as good as his best albums. Politics, Sexuality and My God is Blue is such a brilliant run.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 13:47 (ten years ago) link

would be fine with a whole bossa/brazil influenced album tbh

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 13:53 (ten years ago) link

i like when his music is at least like 10% electronic or at least has electronic vibes, when he goes full french troubadour its v pretty but doesnt really grab me

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 14:18 (ten years ago) link

I think it is: "Brazilian music is perfect as it’s full of mysterious chords and strange melodies, but also light & sunny. I feel my previous albums were just tests to reach this point."

willem, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 14:28 (ten years ago) link

smh exoticism jk

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 14:42 (ten years ago) link

I love Sexuality but for some reason have never listened to any of his other albums \o_O/

steendriver dysphoria hoos (The Reverend), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:40 (ten years ago) link

The albums either side are well worth hearing. Very different but really good. Sexuality is by far my favourite though.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:53 (ten years ago) link

rev sebastian tellier - la ritournelle is imo the most beautiful song of all time

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:56 (ten years ago) link

That's in my top ten songs of all time.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:57 (ten years ago) link

obv I've heard "La Ritournelle"!

steendriver dysphoria hoos (The Reverend), Thursday, 1 May 2014 09:23 (ten years ago) link

Isn't the last album basically 14 variations on "La Ritournelle"? I think it's the same band, too.

vmajestic, Friday, 2 May 2014 17:22 (ten years ago) link

I really hope this album rules as the cover is just perfect.

Anyone else heard the new album yet? I think it's really beautiful and probably the most instant album he's done.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 5 June 2014 18:37 (ten years ago) link

had given up on him but his recent interviews have made me want to check this out

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 5 June 2014 21:47 (ten years ago) link

I didn't like the album he put out last year at all but this one is fantastic. The production is excellent and it has much more of a playful feel than the last albums.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 5 June 2014 21:51 (ten years ago) link

its all about the tunes man the tunes

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 21:55 (ten years ago) link

Had a hard time getting into it, but thankfully that phase only lasted about 30 hours. After that it's pretty much just bliss. Great, great atmosphere throughout, decent to megalomaniacal (Comment revoir Oursinet!) songwriting, sometimes fantastic musical orchestration (Sous les rayons du soleil etc), goofy disco stuff, it's all there. In terms of a coherent album definitely a step forward again compared to MGIB.

And Ambiance Rio is a superjam for the ages, stuff you edge on golden plates to send into space as a prime example of human culture.

the europan nikon is here (grauschleier), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:05 (ten years ago) link

Early days but at the moment it's my second favourite of his after sexuality.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 5 June 2014 23:17 (ten years ago) link

Likely have given the album at least two spins a day, still showing no signs of fatigue, much to the contrary. Only showstopper atm is the chorus of Ricky L'Adolescent, so loud and brash after all this gentleness. Good thing the verses make up for it.

the europan nikon is here (grauschleier), Thursday, 5 June 2014 23:51 (ten years ago) link

I know nothing about this guy but L'aventura kinda sounds like a new Air album and that's good enough for me

calstars, Friday, 6 June 2014 00:32 (ten years ago) link

Politics, Sexuality and My God is Blue is such a brilliant run.
Not forgetting 'Universe' or the Narco soundtrack.

Has this got a UK release yet? It only seems to be available on import at Amazon and as much as I like ST, I'm not paying £17.65 for it.

Bloody Snail, Friday, 6 June 2014 00:59 (ten years ago) link

Looking around it looks like it will be released worldwide on July 14th.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 6 June 2014 02:20 (ten years ago) link

at first I found it quite bad, except "aller vers le soleil" which is brilliant, one of his best songs ever for me.
now I enjoy it more and more.
"l'adulte" is very good. so is "oursinet", the space opera dedicated to his teddy bear, although the 14min are a bit scary at first !
I still need to listen to the whole thing but I get good vibrations from this after all.
and there are some wtf moments, as ever with him.
my favourite is "je vais lui tirer dans la bite" (I'm gonna shoot him in the dick), during "ricky". irl lol when I first heard it !

This new record is incredible - very Balearic.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 13 June 2014 04:05 (ten years ago) link

sorry but I find this one really terrible - I really treid since I was looking forward to hear him try light bossa sounds. Instead it's the same annoying tuneless Gainsbourg-goes-disco stuff he's been doing for a while now

jammin laventura, starts off ina more french pop troubadour mode and then takes you on an increasingly groovy heavy journey

except the tuneless part isnt that sort of just his thing altogether, unless you only like the pre sexuality stuff in which case loosen up man unbutton a couple shirt buttons here have a nice drink look at the ocean isnt it beautiful

So, L'Aventura holds up suprisingly well. Partially because it feels so meticulously crafted in a vintage concept album (or its parody) sense from the segue of songs, the integration of the overlong suite up to the artwork, without affecting the songs qualitywise. Aspects in which My God Is Blue didn't really excel imo.
On the other hand he seems to have more or less bottled the promotional aspect of the release with the nearly two months of delay between French and International launch? Could have made millions with selling Ambiance Rio for World Cup trailers, instead 2 ilx postings since June.

Anyway, will see him in Bruxelles in about two weeks. Do Belgian ilxors exist and are attending/up for a La Chouffe there, by any chance?

the european nikon is here (grauschleier), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 08:38 (nine years ago) link

hey i'm one of three belgium based ilxors (i think) but having seen him three times here already and with a small baby taking up most of my free time, i'll prob give this a pass - I'll DM you if that changes. Where is he playing? AB?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 09:33 (nine years ago) link

eheh ilxors of the world unite !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 16:12 (nine years ago) link

baaderonix, yep AB. Seems fairly nice there?

Was thinking about Paris as well, but as the Bruxelles concert is on a Saturday it makes for a nice opportunity to spend the weekend there as well.

curious to listen to this but I'm always happy to see the font from The Bold & The Beautiful used anywhere

boxedjoy, Saturday, 2 June 2018 10:48 (six years ago) link

I wanted to like this album more than I did. I wasn't that keen on her voice and the music seemed like Sebastien was going through the motions in places. The Charlotte Gainsbourg album did this style way better.

kitchen person, Saturday, 2 June 2018 16:50 (six years ago) link

That is...an overstatement of its quality. I know that "person who can't sing or speak French tries to sing in French" is a beloved musical genre but this was still unlistenable imo.

three weeks pass...

Listening to this just now and it feels very much like a Tellier album featuring a guest vocalist, DVT could be anyone. He's on autopilot but to be honest I dont mind, the music sounds as lush as ever and her voice doesn't bother me the way it seems to bother everyone else. I can see why it would seem formulaic and on the verge of self-parody though, I guess I just feel amiable to its charms.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 23 June 2018 17:42 (six years ago) link

"Fevers And Candies" has got me thinking about how good he would sound working with a singer like Lana Del Rey
